FCT Elections: INEC excludes Labour Party, PDP faces disqualification by Melezenawii(op): 9:18am On Dec 28, 2025
Seventy-four candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party in the forthcoming Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections are facing possible disqualification following unresolved leadership crises within the party.

This comes as the Labour Party has been completely shut out of the polls, having presented no candidates on the final list released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on September 22, 2025.

With the Area Council elections scheduled for February 21, 2026, INEC documents show that out of the 16 registered political parties, only the LP currently has no candidate cleared for the exercise.

The FCT has 68 elective positions, comprising six chairmanship seats and 62 councillorship positions across Abuja Municipal Area Council, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, Abaji, and Kwali.

Although the PDP submitted a full slate of 74 candidates — 12 for chairmanship and vice-chairmanship positions and 62 for councillorship seats — the legitimacy of those nominations is now under legal threat

The LP’s exclusion stems from a protracted leadership tussle between the Julius Abure-led faction and the Nenadi Usman-led National Caretaker Committee, backed by the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and Abia State Governor, Alex Otti.

INEC has refused to recognise the national convention held in Nnewi, which re-elected Abure, insisting that his tenure had expired.

PDP is not affected because names of candidates to contest were published on 22nd September 2025, prior to the artificial crisis created.

LP should have gone to court to challenge INEC's decision. Abia governor and Peter Obi made a mess of the party.

The crisis in PDP is actually a blessing for the Labour Party. They should have used this opportunity to resolve their own crisis. Now they will be seen as a party with no followership and this will help in debunking the myth that they are a formidable party.

May God bless Nigeria for ever!

Fear Wike, the weapon of mass destruction, as party crises, legal battles, and disqualifications reveal how Abuja politics still revolves around power, influence, and internal control.

Re: FCT Elections: INEC excludes Labour Party, PDP faces disqualification by AMINDA: 1:43pm On Dec 28, 2025
This what Tinubu has done to our democracy out of desperation to be the only candidate on the ballot come 2027. These parties were without problems barely 3 years ago. In that desperation, he has unknowingly united the first and second runner-up candidates in the 2023 election under one umbrella. That will eventually be his waterloo come 2027.
