China Based Anambra Businessman Burnt To Death In GNI Fire (Photos) by IzunnaOkafor(op): 12:17pm On Dec 30, 2025

What could be best described as tragedy has struck an Anambra community following the death of a man, Obumneme, popularly known as Nzeakaibeya, who reportedly returned to Nigeria from China to celebrate the Christmas season with his people, only to lose his life in a most painful and devastating way.

Obumneme, a native of Umuoji in Idemili North Local Government Area, was said to have died during an inferno that gutted the Great Nigeria Insurance House, a high-rise building on Lagos Island, on the eve of Christmas.

According to videos currently trending on social media, the deceased was trapped when parts of the building collapsed on him as he attempted to recover goods from the burning plaza.

Reports and eyewitness accounts currently circulating online revealed that the victim had initially succeeded in salvaging some goods from the building. However, he reportedly returned the second time to retrieve more goods when sections of the structure suddenly collapsed, trapping him inside; and he was unable to escape as the fire intensified.

This reporter, Izunna Okafor, also came across some heart-rending audio recordings accompanying the viral videos, which captured Obumneme’s last moments, including a distress call he had with his wife, during which he was heard crying out in pain and desperately asking for emergency help.

Also, in another voice note believably shared on a WhatsApp platform, his wife was heard crying out and pleading with people at the who were nearby the scene to assist in rescuing her husband. Sadly, no immediate help came, as the man was eventually burnt to death.

The incident also sparked emotional reactions online, with many netizens lamenting the regrettable absence or delayed arrival of emergency responders at the scene at the critical moment when the victim was still alive and calling for help.

The demise of Obumneme, who was described by many as a vibrant and enterprising young man, has thrown the Umuoji community into deep mourning, with residents and sympathizers expressing shock and grief over such a painful and sudden loss.

The highly tragic death occurred amid a larger disaster at the Great Nigeria Insurance House, where three bodies were also later recovered and eight persons rescued following the massive fire outbreak. The inferno reportedly destroyed goods worth billions of naira, leaving many importers and traders, including online vendors, devastated.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Mr. Nosa Okunbor, said the fire started around 5:00 p.m. on Christmas Eve, originating from the fourth floor of the 25-storey building before spreading rapidly to other sections and nearby structures.

According to him, eight men, including a firefighter, were rescued with varying degrees of injuries and taken to hospitals, while five other victims who sustained minor injuries were treated at the scene and discharged. He added that the fire also affected adjoining buildings, including the Radio Nigeria building, Oluwole Plaza, the Old Lagos Central Mosque and other nearby structures, noting that most were, however, eventually salvaged through coordinated emergency efforts.

The LASEMA Spokesman said Emergency responders, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, worked through the night into Christmas Day to contain the blaze, with dampening operations continuing to prevent a re-ignition of the fire.

I don't think I will ever like to live in a building higher than a story building.

One need to always consider his safety in everything.

I pray God comfort his loved ones.

One out of just two casualties sad. I don't know if it's him or the other casualty that was sending voicenotes to loved ones that he's still trapped in the fire and it's not looking like he'll make it out alive. What a horrible horrible way to die, may their souls rest in peace sad

As long as you have your life intact, there's hope...Why did he make that big mistake of salvaging goods that does not worth his life...it is well

That's quite tragic and unfortunate. If the goods have been insured, perhaps he wouldn't be bothered to scramble to salvage the goods as the inferno engulfed the building.

He had the priceless opportunity to save himself but he chose to save pricy goods .
He died for his goods.
Who do us and money.

But another report said the building collapsed on him when he was evacuating the last batch of his goods. It was reported that he called somebody on the phone to ask for help while still under the rubble and several hours later, he called again and it was noticed that his voice was getting weaker. Before the rubbles could be lifted, he had given up the ghost.

It will look that way especially since he lost his life in the process. He would probably have been seen as a hero if he had pulled it off. At last the risk wasn't worth it.

RIP dear one.

Your country failed you.
But you shouldn't return or enter a building on fire. This is common sense. You can get killed in many, ways, smoke, heat, flash and structural collapse. Whatever he was trying to do was simply not worth it.

So sad!
May he rest in peace - I saw the voice note and the story on social media and felt so sad!

He was already out but went in again to salvage more goods before one side of the building caved in.

My people, sometimes, as a man, your life is not worth anything material. There are times you just have to let go just to have your peace and sanity.

I remembered during the frequent fire occurrences at the Onitsha main market, at one incident, people were salvaging their goods and the inferno was approaching. My father just looked, sighed and asked all of us, including the "umuboi" to evacuate the place.

The "umuboi" were hesitant as they wanted to salvage as much goods as possible, but my dad insisted that everybody should evacuate and not bother with the remaining goods.

The raging inferno came and razed down everything, with fatality on people that were still trying to salvage their goods.

I believe that with life, more things could come ones way with dint of hard work. On many occasions, i had let things go, huge losses just to move on instead of getting myself stocked on something I could not help

Rest in peace, bro! I feel sorry for your wife and your family.

Does it mean we just build those high rise buildings without any safety plans for a fire disaster?

Lived in the 23rd floor of a high rise in China for years and never felt unsafe for once.
This is a Nigerian problem and we are not doing enough as a people to stop the mess.
High rises are good in terms of keeping big population together, but a lot of emergency steps have to be observed religiously to make things work well

FOOLISHNESS IS FOR YOU TO CRY OVER THIS MAN WHO DIDN'T EVEN VALUE HIS LIFE BUT CHOOSE MONEY OVER HIS LIFE

HE DIDN'T THINK OF HIS WIFE

HE DIDN'T THINK OF HIS CHILDREN

HE DIDN'T THINK OF HIS LOVED ONES

INSTEAD HE THOUGHT OF THE GOODS HE HAD INSIDE THE BURNING BUILDING

WHAT HE DID IS PURE UNADULTERATED FOOLISHNESS
