bassdow:I think his suggestion is very sound and maybe the most effective. Could you perhaps shed more light as to the reason for your counter opinion? |
| Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by HawkTuahGirl: 3:21pm On Dec 30, 2025 |
bassdow:off course, the change-over is for the batteries. What do you suggest, he can he can only use 800w panel. And 800w cannot charge 400a batteries full with Lagos weather. Thats why I m suggesting using the second controller with another panel splitting the batteries. For context, I m not a professional installer but DIY person that love experimenting. So if someone gives me 12v inverter system, 400a batteries and 2 mppt cc, I wont complain its not 24v system, I will find a way to make it work. |

I separated them before but I was not getting it. I have 4 200w panels that is turning in 20ah at peak period and 2s2p panels that is generating 9ah at peak period. HawkTuahGirl: |

HeavenlyBang:e get capacity / load wey you go reach, 12v or even 24v becomes less suitable. Mind you, He could still comfortably use his 12v system for all those loads with almost no issue |
| Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by bassdow: 7:39pm On Dec 30, 2025 |
Deluxe8000:if I were you, I would first sell off those 200w solar panels. A lot of them are barely up to 150w to begin with. Whatever you do, the minimum solar panel ought be 300w. Those 200w and below are mostly for those using portable Solar systems because it gives them a cheap shortcut to proper charging system, almost not requiring a charge controller |

| Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by bassdow: 7:53pm On Dec 30, 2025 |
HawkTuahGirl:I recall being the one saying the limit should be 800w but either way, is the 800w a single panel or a combination of solar panels ? An average quality MPPT charge controller + good solar panels of 800w in good mount location should be able to properly recharge your batteries especially since they even are lithium batteries. Another issue is the current coming from that 800w solar panel. 3pcs of 300w or 2pcs of 400w or even 2pcs of 350w solar panels should do a good work if those solar panels are individually 200w, then that's your number 1 problem. And if your charge controller is PWM, or glorified MPPT, that's another problem and until you fix those, you wasting your time especially since you even on 12v system. |

Deluxe8000:either go with the suggestion by @HeavenlyBang or ... what's spec of your current Solar panels ? |

| Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by bassdow: 8:26pm On Dec 30, 2025 |
Deluxe8000:didn't ask of brand name; those mostly are useless information to me. I asked for spec of the solar panels e.g their wattage such as 200w , or 150w or 300w or 800w or ![]() |

fuckboys:4 pieces of 450w panels will carry the load and charge the batteries fully. Can 60ah mppt cc handle them? How much can one get the 450w panel? |
| Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by bassdow: 8:51pm On Dec 30, 2025*. Modified: 9:06pm On Dec 30, 2025 |
Deluxe8000:A typical 60A charge controller on 24v can handle a maximum of 1,600w though if a bit higher is safe but not adviceAble so 4pcs of 450w in series => 450w * 4 = 1,800w which shouldn't be much an issue BUT would advice you do 2S2P to avoid over heating or stressing the charge controller unnecessarily. in other words, YES your 60A MPPT charge controller can Also if you looking to buy solar panels, then no need going for 450w, you could just go for 2pcs of 500w which is well within capacity of your 60A charge controller OR 4pcs of 450w in 2S2P config OR 4pcs of 400w in 2S2P config OR just go big with 2pcs of 600w solar panel in 2S config. As for price of solar panel, you need mention what part of Nigeria you reside in + your max budget so we know if it's New or Used your pocket can afford |

Location Shomolu onipan area of lagos What matters most is the one that will carry the load and charge the batteries fully daily at the same time as an off grid set up. I need to know to prepare myself for next year. |
| Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by bassdow: 9:46pm On Dec 30, 2025 |
Deluxe8000:Either of 4pcs of 450w solar panel in 2S2P config OR 4pcs of 400w solar panel in 2S2P config OR 2pcs of 600w solar panel in 2S config should do. Let me allow Fouani people drop prices or just waka enter Arena or Ojo market or whatever BUT be mindful of Ojoro solar panels whether New or Used |
| Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by fuckboys: 11:00pm On Dec 30, 2025 |
Deluxe8000:you’re limiting yourself if you use a 60a cc cos it’s 720w on 12v peaks. You need a high pv voltage hybrid inverter or a 100a mppt cc |

| Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by bassdow: 5:24pm On Dec 31, 2025 |
Deluxe8000:so you see, I don talk am already that if your solar panels is composed of 200w solar panels, that should be first issue you need tackle. See https://www.nairaland.com/390522/solar-energy-complement-fta/2223#137961973 You first need dispose them off else even if it appears to work, na your battery go suffer later. BUT if money no dey for now, and you got an average quality MPPT charge controller, then do 4s config |

Dear Techees and DIYers, I did like to say Happy New year to those who may have crossed over and Happy New Year in advance to those counting down... Just today, I thought it required to isolate my system in bits for checks, tightening and dust blowing off starting with my Charge Controller with pictures attached. However, I found something worthy of monitoring. The Battery negative line appears to be burning gradually from the inside. Gradually I mean after about 3years. I may have to monitor this over time and consider changing... This is just to share and remind us to prepare our systems for yet another year for optimization and or any words/contribution

Fakeisfake:would suggest getting the burnt area changed No need waiting any longer. Also they should ensure it's tightened enough. Also you could get a blower to help make life a bit easier for you |
| Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by Fakeisfake: 7:49pm On Dec 31, 2025 |
bassdow:Changing that requires taking out the board and soldingring the other end. Would handle myself when I would be ready. First is to use a brush, the iron part of the pencil brush is taped off to avoid bridging of any kind, then blower was used. Job done already and put back to service... |
