Good question: Anambra has Iyienu, Water Side as major and most visited hospitals which are church owned, Boromey (though spelling may be incorrect) with one major catholic hospital in Awka. All the church owned hospitals were equipped and functional always, it was Mr Obi investment in missionary hospital was part of the reason the govt own medical staff protested and went on strike. I lived in Anambra for Obi 8yrs reign in Anambra, he is simply the best.

The irony of the narrative is that you actually don't care to read up what transpired and how the action led to a better healthcare in Anambra till date.

Lastly, let me do the honour to enlighten you on what transpired in Anambra state during the period.

The strike was as a result of 2 things. However, the main reason why the strike lingered is the second point below.

1. In 2009, the federal government created a federal Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) for all medical practitioners in Nigeria. It had to do with better pay packages for all medical staffs. At federal level, it was implemented. At the state level, only Ekiti state implemented it 100%. Other states negotiated (Anambra state inclusive). Anambra state implemented 60% of the policy. This percentage is even higher than what Lagos state implemented. There were strike actions in Lagos state in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 because of this same CONMESS implementation. Now, let's go to the main issue why the strike in Anambra unapologetically lingered.

2. Peter Obi as the governor from 2006 to 2009 didn't see any impact of the budget (money spent) on Healthcare. He then decided to do something differently. He observed that faith based hospitals were well managed and booming while the state government hospitals were in shambles. The limitations that these faith based hospitals had was funding.

What did he do? The funds for healthcare to build and sustain existing hospitals was given to all the faith based hospitals to upscale existing hospitals and build new hospitals. The result? Massive. New hospitals were built and the accessibility was massive.

But as usual, corruption decided to fight back. Which was the reason why even though other states were on strike for the CONMESS implementation, Anambra own was personal. Cuz what they were actually fighting for was the usual practice of looting healthcare budget.

Guess what. Peter Obi no gree. After 13 months, they eventually called off the strike and went about their business afterwards.

That is why I am saying that you are not from Anambra. Cuz if you were, you would have known that the people stood by Peter Obi during the period.
