I’ve been closely observing the Jobs/Vacancies section for quite some time now, and over this period, I’ve started to notice a very distinct pattern emerging. Whenever someone posts a vacancy for a trainee role that offers a clear long-term career path but comes with a modest starting salary, that post usually receives about 5 comments, maybe a few more if it’s particularly detailed. However, when someone shares a 'business opportunity' promising an unrealistic 500k a month with absolutely 'no experience needed,' that thread instantly blows up with dozens, sometimes hundreds of comments and shares. It’s a stark contrast that really makes me wonder about our collective mindset. Why are we so drawn to these get-rich-quick schemes? Why has the idea of earning 'Quick Money' become almost like our national anthem, dominating our conversations and aspirations? The Three Hard Truths The Death of the 'Entry Level': In today's fast-paced world, it seems everyone aspires to become a CEO or a “Big Boy” within just six months. The desire to reach the top quickly has overshadowed the traditional career path. Few people are willing to start as apprentices or junior staff members anymore, roles that are essential for gaining foundational experience. We want to enjoy the fruit without taking the time or effort to plant and nurture the tree first. This shift reflects a broader impatience with the process of learning and growth in professional environments. The Betting Culture: In today’s society, we have gradually replaced the genuine dignity and value of hard labor with a fleeting hope placed on uncertain "odds." Instead of investing in their personal growth or future, many young men are choosing to spend their last 2,000 units of currency on betting slips. This is money that could have been wisely used to purchase educational resources or data plans that would allow them to learn valuable digital skills, which have the potential to provide long-term benefits and career opportunities. The 'Respect' Factor: In Nigeria today, the common question people ask is no longer about how you achieved your success or the journey you took; instead, they simply want to know if you possess wealth or status. We tend to show more admiration and respect for a 22-year-old who drives a Lexus than for a 40-year-old teacher who has dedicated 15 years of hard work and commitment to their profession. This shift in values highlights how material possessions have become a primary measure of respect in society. [The "Devil's Advocate"] "I understand that the economy is really tough right now. I know that a 50k salary hardly stretches far enough to even buy a basic bag of rice. But have we, in our desperate hunger for quick money, become completely blind to the importance and long-term benefits of investing in building a real, sustainable career that can grow over time?" Is it primarily the current state of the economy that has pushed us into adopting this relentless 'Quick Money' mindset, or have we, as a society, gradually lost the valuable virtue of patience that once guided our decisions and actions? Let’s take a moment to explore and discuss these important questions together.

Akinpedia:You can't blame the people, many entry level job too needs to do something about their pay. And the cost of living is why they need to. Most of these entry level job are in big cities which cost a lot to reside in. 150k cannot sustain a person in lagos and some of these companies are offering that. |

I agree that 150k is small, but let's be honest: many people won't even take a 250k job if it requires 9-5 stress because they've seen their 'crypto' or 'betting' friend make that in one day. Is it really just the low pay, or have we lost the discipline to grow through a career? If everyone waits for 500k entry-level, who will do the actual work? Hardeybohwarley: |

Hardeybohwarley:That 150k job today in a solid firm can be the catalyst for your millions tommorow. As an entry level, you’re not adding much value per se. You’re learning more than you’re adding value. Entry level that cannot write mails properly or format documents or even staple papers the right way. Hiss. In my days, we were thankful to put names of bluechip companies on our cv even if it was to work for free. I can tell you the strategy paid off as most folks i started with either leveraged the experience and company brand to get jobs abroad or they pivoted to other companies and are earning millions in Nigeria. Prioritize learning and experience first before huge salary. If i were starting over, i will gladly take a 70k per month job in a blue chip company today with the full knowledge that all i need is a year or two worth of learning, experience, networking, etc before i make my next big move |

You are looking for cheap labour. You people exploit younger folks. It's not your fault, it's because the regulatory bodies meant to deal with exploitation in employment aren't doing anything |
| Re: Why Are We Like This? Why Nigerians Are Obsessed With 'quick Money! by Akinpedia(op): 7:24am On Dec 31, 2025 |
Regulation is one thing, but let's look at the reality. If a small business owner makes 1M profit, they can't pay one entry-level staff 500k. Is it 'exploitation' or just the reality of a dying economy? My worry is that while we wait for 'regulatory bodies' that may never come, a whole generation is losing the ability to actually work and build a career. RealityKings1: |

Iamblessed88:The thing is that most people are tired of the system So they are taking their destiny into their hands Heck now you have to beg, roll on the floor before you get cleaner job in these organizations, not to talk of entry level. And people are fast learning that most organization heads are the cause of all these problems. For example Olayemi terminating the jobs of 500 NIRSAL staff in DEC 2024. So people are now wise to avoid jobs offers where people like Olayemi will wake up one day and send them packing from the entry level roles without due consultation with stipend compensation for the flimsiest of excuses. |

Eyaaa... I see the 'Quick Money' hunger has made you paranoid. Not everyone on Nairaland is out to sell you something. Some of us actually still use our brains for free discussion. Since you're so sure I'm selling something, show me the price list. If not, let's talk about the topic. Kaczynski: |

Most “get-rich-quick” schemes fail because they ignore reality. They promise fast money, but hide the risks, lack real skills, and collapse once new people stop joining. Many end in losses, stress, and wasted time. Real online income takes learning, consistency, and patience. Anything selling “instant success” is usually selling false hope, not value. |

Lol, suffer plenty! But shey we go come use 'Quick Money' take heal the suffer? Many people chase fast cash and end up 'suffering' in a cell or with high blood pressure. I’m just saying we should talk about how this mindset is changing our DNA as a people. WINDSOW: |

Akinpedia:Thanks for seeing my view. There is greed with a lot of people as well and it's our Country they'll causes it. I graduated in 2018 and ever since the highest payinh job I got was teaching job which pays 30k. Imagine, if not for God and then Nairaland that help me get some remote jobs, I might still be in that school slaving. And don't come at me for not trying, I have applied to almost 25 GT job and hundreds of other jobs. |

I hear you, brother, and I salute your resilience. 30k for a graduate is not just 'small,' it’s an insult to the years you spent in school. It’s stories like yours that make 'Quick Money' look so attractive to others. But look at what you said: 'Nairaland helped me get remote jobs.' That is the point! Instead of following the 'fast/illegal' route, you used your brain and the internet to find a better way. You moved from 30k to remote work—that is growth, even if it was hard. My question to the house is: How many people are willing to search for 'Remote Jobs' or learn skills like this person did, versus those who just want to 'press phone' and see millions overnight? Many will avoid this your topic cos they're after quick money too. The simple reason why they chase quick money is just impatience and laziness. And don't forget the words of the bible that men will be lovers of money than lovers of men. This too is part of the issue whether we take it or leave it. |

Apart from the greed affecting the system, companies also need to adjust their modus operandi. If you want to employ entry level within the salary range of 50k-150k, that job should not be on-site. At least hybrid mode is still reasonable in big cities if full remote is not feasible. The truth of the matter is there's no way someone earning within that range can cope in Lagos for onsite jobs. How many months salaries will he use to pay his rents, let alone feeding and transportation except he has someone to stay with? We can't deny the fact that things are changing very fast and people are learning new skills that empower them to get remote jobs. Similarly, in the next 10-20 years the number of university enrollment will drop drastically because there won't be a necessity for going to university when you can easily acquire quality education online, that's if there is need for it. |

Location and lack of accommodation are the major issues. Early last year a colleague invited for an entry level job in a construction site at 250k a month. I couldn't accept the job because I didn't have any fund on me to relocate and sort out accommodation. Also one of the reason I couldn't accept the offer was that I had just enrolled in web- development training (frontend) back then. Over the last one year I have consistently learned frontend development and I'm looking for a remote internship opportunity in any Blue ship company so I can polish my skill. I would really appreciate if anyone can link me up I wouldn't mind volunteering. Thanks. and happy new year to everyone! |
