The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of the driver who conveyed world boxing champion Anthony Joshua in the vehicle involved in a tragic accident that killed two of his associates.

A brief statement signed by the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, on Thursday, revealed that the driver of the Lexus SUV is now in police custody as investigations intensify.

“The driver of the Lexus SUV is currently in custody in connection with the Anthony Joshua accident case. Investigations are ongoing,” Babaseyi stated.

The arrest, SaharaReporters learnt, is part of a broader effort by the authorities to establish full cause and culpability in the deadly incident.

However, the identity of the driver has not been officially disclosed as of press time.

Earlier, SaharaReporters reported that Anthony Joshua, had been discharged from hospital following the road accident on December 29, 2025, that claimed the lives of his two close friends, Sina Ghami and Latif "Latz" Ayodele.

The former world heavyweight boxing champion was discharged late Wednesday afternoon.

Joshua was deemed clinically fit to recuperate at home, though he remained “heavy hearted and full of emotions over the loss of his two close friends,” a joint statement from the Lagos and Ogun state governments on Wednesday said.

The statement was signed by Gbenga Omotoso, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Lagos State, and Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Ogun State.

According to the statement, Joshua and his mother visited a Lagos funeral home on Wednesday afternoon to pay their final respects as the bodies of the late friends were prepared for repatriation later in the evening.

In a joint statement, the governments of Lagos and Ogun states expressed condolences to the families of the deceased, saying: “We pray The Almighty grant the repose of their souls whilst granting their families and loved ones the fortitude to bear this very sad and painful loss.”

The statement also thanked members of the public and the President for their support, saying, “Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu deeply appreciate the public concern and show of love and affection over this very sad and unfortunate incident.

“They also appreciate Mr President, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, for all fatherly support he gave throughout the process.”

The governments further commended medical personnel at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, “that attended to Anthony and those that sustained injuries”.

“The quality of care and professionalism is truly commendable,” they said.

Unfortunately, a lot of Nigerians are ignorant and don't know how it's been done even in the developed countries.
It is within the mandate of the Nigerian police to arrest the driver and carry out necessary investigation in order to ascertain if he was not culpable directly or indirectly.

There’s really no need for this theatrical publicity stunt by the NPF. AJ and his fellow travellers are not toddlers on a school excursion. If the driver was overspeeding, it was entirely within their rights to rein him in.

The police would do well to focus on matters that actually demand their attention, rather than manufacturing tension where none exists and mistaking calm situations for crime scenes. A little less showmanship, a little more sense.
