I’m about to start driving lessons and I’m unsure whether to learn manual or automatic.
For those who started with manual, was it hard at first? How long did it take you to finally get hold used to it? Do you think it gave you an advantage later, or would you advise a beginner to start with automatic instead?
As someone who learnt with manual, it's was very hard I won't lie, but after I learnt how to drive manual, no one taught me how to drive automatic. I just entered the automatic car and started driving it.
If you know how to drive manual, you can drive automatic easily.
But if you know how to drive automatic only, if something comes up and you have to drive a manual car, you can't even if they put a gun to your head. So learn manual, it's harder but more rewarding

If you don't know how to drive manual or stick shift then you are not a complete driver!

90% of all cars?
I'm sure that doesn't include Europe and Australia.
It does and some countries are on 99% already. You can confirm

It’s like suggesting that one should learn to use the four figure table, so they can appreciate excel and graphing calculators!

Of what use is learning manual when technology has advanced to the point that manual cars are being phased out? Except you plan to be a danfo bus driver, of what use is it to learn manualhuh
I have never even seen an uber driver using manual sef
Because of thrills manual gives! The Adrenalin rush you get when calling the shots instantaneously, and that vibe you get hearing your engine roar when you make those damn shifts with that recoil feel you get.

Manufacturers know and why they now adding the semi automatics option to cars and still can’t beat the manual shift when it comes to the excitement of driving.

You might not need the skills for manual transmission in this age and time.
However, learning manual is like having insurance.... U r Bleep if it is required and u don't have the skills....
If you think you will ever come across manual trans, the n go ahead and learn it.
Generally speaking, learning it won't hurt...

Learn with manual first.

There is nothing complex.

When you are good @ it, automatic will be cake walk.

And yes, you will be better off knowing the two.
You never know when an emergency shows up and you are the one who saves the day.
Re: Those Who Learned Manual Driving, Was It Worth It? by SonOfDSoil01: 3:09pm On Jan 02
grin why not use one stone to kill 2 birds? Manual is the foundation of driving because you learn the basic and once you can learn manual driving and master the basics then you automatically find automatic easy to drive…..ignore those asking you not to start with manual. Even F1 drivers use manual cars for car racing because you have the total control of the car unlike automatic and car manufacturers are still producing them because they are still demand for it some driver still prefer them as a matter of choice.

Every where ma/sir. Over 90% of all cars created today are automatic.

So?? Is that not being phased out?
Who told you so?

Go to Madrid in Spain, at least 70% of the cars you will see are manual.

You can quote me on this, I'm talking about what I saw with my own eyes not what I was told!

Don't stress yourself.
Ignore the comments telling you to learn manual because if you learn it and don't drive it actively, it is equal to learning with automatic.

I learned and drove manual for years.
I am not sure I have seen anyone around me drive one in the past 7yrs. If the need will come up one day, I don't know.
Looking at the bigger picture.

The young man may NOT be of the same social status with you so he should begin with manual transmission in order to get himself familiar with the fundamentals of driving. From there, he can proceed to learning about automatic transmission which is easy peasy.

I learnt how to drive on manual before autos were really popular here so it was worth it for me because the transition to auto was so easy I couldn't believe how stark the difference between driving manual was to driving automatic. Driving an automatic is simplier than riding a bicycle.

Learning with a manual transmission vehicle will improve your focus level, raise your alertness, as well as sharpen your decision making ability while on the wheels. You wouldn’t know how quickly people lose focus while driving these days. All thanks to automatic transmission.

It is not compulsory to use a manual car to practice in the EU, you can Use automatic, its your choice. The determine factor is your POCKET
If you learn with manual your permit allows you to drive both manual and automatic. But if you learn with automatic your license only allows for automatic.

Very worth it. Manual cars are here to stay for life and those that didn't learn it are missing something.

I can list many advantages but the biggest of them all is understanding the vehicle is a very basic way, better. Its hard for you to be stranded as long as the engine can still crank.

I live for control and performance any car, any road, I want to own it. Manual is my jam on the highway, gives me full confidence. City driving? Automatic all the way. But on a trip, nothing beats the feel of a manual in my hands.
