A masquerade has stunned viewers after being captured dancing energetically to a local traditional beat while displaying an uncommon, Gen Z–inspired dance move.

The masquerade, who was performing before a large crowd, quickly drew attention as his performance entertained onlookers, prompting many in the audience to spray him with money in appreciation.

The viral video has since sparked mixed reactions online. While some viewers expressed concern, arguing that such dance steps are foreign to traditional Ekpo cultural performances and that tradition should not be mixed with modernization, others saw nothing wrong with the display and simply enjoyed the performance.

Traditionally, masquerades are often regarded as spirits or ancestral beings believed to possess supernatural powers. In many cultures across Nigeria — including among the Ebira, Igbo, and Yoruba — women are traditionally forbidden from seeing what lies behind the mask, as masquerades were feared and treated with deep reverence. Women were therefore expected to stay far away from masquerades, as their presence was culturally considered inappropriate or forbidden. However, in recent times, this tradition appears to be fading, as women are now commonly seen around masquerades, with some even dancing alongside them or recording videos during performances.

Those aren’t Gen Z dance moves. Those are street moves. Gen Z dance moves are those performed daily on Tik Tok; basic choreography done to childish sounding music tracks.

Alot of Gen Zs are joining the ancestors alot very early nowadays due to bad govt, bad economy and criminality. The more they join the ancestors, the more they modernize our ancestors with Genz way of life🤣. We have seen some pics of masquerades playing bets in betting shops, that is one example 🤣

Racially inferior much? Heal man, heal.

Masquerades in Nigeria (Africa) is not a dress up - it's the spirits of your ancestors inhabiting man and manifesting their presence.

If we had colonized the West and Arab World, them for dey wear masquerades and celebrate too.

Nothing surprising to someone not into supernatural bullshit

Masquerades are just normal people like you and me.... And if a Gen Z guy don the outfit it's normal for him to dance in a way he's familiar with

Gone are the days when masquerade was masquerade, heavily fortified and guided by the underworld. Not these days that a police or soldier strip a masquerade naked and make him dance a berating dance on the road side.
