Nigeria Gets Its First Unmanned 24-Hour Fuel Stations

A.A. Rano Nigeria Limited, founded by oil magnate Alhaji Auwalu Abdullahi Rano, has launched the country’s first fully automated and unmanned fuel stations with 24/7 service, digital payments, and SmartPump technology.

This is being implemented in partnership with Petrosoft Limited, a Nigerian technology company that develops management systems for the oil and gas industry.

The agreement will see Petrosoft deploy its automated station technology across A.A. Rano’s more than 200 retail outlets all over Nigeria.

Via a statement issued on Tuesday 6 January 2026, A.A. Rano says the first automated stations are expected to start operations during the month of January 2026, enabling customers to refuel, make contactless payments and complete transactions without attendants.

According to A.A. Rano, the technology is designed to reduce losses, improve transparency and reassure customers that they are getting the exact volume of fuel for which they pay.

Petrosoft Chief Executive Officer Dr. Joshua Denila said the project shows how homegrown technology can solve long-standing challenges in Nigeria’s fuel retail market.

Denila said, “Our systems are developed locally and built to international standards. They are designed to improve efficiency from single stations to large fueling depots.”

How will they steal? You select how many litres you want to buy, pay first, machine will give you green light and stop at the exact amount you purchase.


With this model, Dangote will further reduce Petrol price if he removes the costs related to Petrol pump attendants. The only danger is that many households will be further thrown to more poverty due to loss of jobs when Petrol pump attendants jobs are eliminated by technology.

I am sure it will not be like UK own that you will dispense petrol first before paying.

Nigerians will make AA Rano regret bringing this innovative initiative that has existed in advance countries to Nigeria. They will device a way to bypass the system and cheat the business.

Its a good development but menial more job loss, more need for Tech expert /Tech security experts.

Good innovation but there are issues already, especially in a country like Nigeria. What happens when there is a failure to dispense product? What about the response of security when there is an attempt to commit a crime at that location? Police wey e dey take 1 year before them respond to calls. We keep seeing these things even with our ATM machines at banks or remote locations

Great , even many developing countries like India are unable to replicate this.

I had the vision since 2003 but did not know how to develop it.

The UK uses an outdated system. You should be able to select the amount of fuel to purchase, make payment and dispense and if the tank gets full before it gets to that amount, you stop and press refund excess and the system recalculates and refunds to your card.

Less need for ANPR cameras reading your plates or attendants watching cctv. No need to chase anyone.

Same owner of Rano Air, one of the best private airlines in Nigeria. Prompt as always.

This innovation is good especially for midnight travelers.

A country does not need to have a car manufacturing sector to have mechanics to fix the cars

Otherwise a person in say Togo whose Toyota breaks down would be shipping it to Japan for repairs. Not possible and difficult

This will affect those people that always see Fuel Station as a dumping ground for "tear Tear money".

Something that has been in even less developed countries for several years. Nigeria always comes late to the show. It's commendable though.

You're very correct. There's no gas station abroad with attendant. It's all serve yourself and pay through POS.

Purchase from Dangote and stop selling at 739, that's more important than the automated sell
