The Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has expressed profound sadness over the devastating fire incident in Lagos State that claimed the lives of three Anambra indigenes. Governor Soludo described the tragedy as heartbreaking and deeply painful, noting that the loss has plunged not only the affected families but the entire Anambra State into mourning. The victims were Mr. Steve Onyeka Omatu (40), Mr. Casmir Nnabuike Omatu (39), and Mr. Collins Kenechukwu Omatu (37) and were brothers from the Omatu family of Uzoakwa Community in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State. In a statement issued on Wednesday by his Press Secretary, Mr. Christian Aburime, the Governor said the tragic incident occurred at the Great Nigeria Insurance House on Martins Street, Lagos Island, on December 24, 2025. Governor Soludo commiserated with all families who lost loved ones in the unfortunate inferno, lamenting that the catastrophic event turned what should have been a joyous Christmas Eve into a night of unspeakable sorrow and grief. According to the Governor, the deceased were industrious young men who were simply striving to earn an honest living to support their families before their lives were cut short in the most tragic circumstances. He noted that their deaths represent not only a devastating loss to their immediate family but also a collective loss to Anambra State, as the state has been deprived of promising and productive citizens. While commending the swift response and tireless efforts of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the Lagos State Fire Service, and other emergency responders who worked to rescue victims and contain the fire, Governor Soludo also advised Anambra citizens living in Lagos and other parts of the country to always prioritise human life and personal safety over the recovery of property during fire outbreaks. The Governor prayed for God to grant the bereaved families the strength and fortitude to bear their irreparable losses and asked that the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace. He further called on the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the fire and to ensure that appropriate safety measures are implemented to prevent similar tragic occurrences in the future.

Lagos should demand for that investigation. Traders converted that building into a warehouse for clothing material, especially cotton. Don't they know that clothes are considered as flammable solids? They are dangerous goods. Who gave them permission to turn that building into a warehouse? |

Otutubuike: As much as sad this is and I sympathise with the families of those that have lost loved ones in the unfortunate incident…….just like the governor said, people should prioritise their life over material things that can be gotten back as long as their is still life most of the people that died in that tragedy could have still been alive today if they prioritised their life over material possessions, this one here is a typical example and the other man that made a call for help when he went in to get is goods and was trapped……may they continue to rest in peace ![]() |

SonOfDSoil01:Exactly what I said on X, that fire has been burning since 12noon, what are people still doing in that axis if not for those trying to evacuate their merchandise. They prioritized their good over their lifes and paid the ultimate prize. |

I can't imagine how their loved ones will be feeling now. Loosing 3 young men the same day is not something that's easy to bear. May God in his infinite mercies grant their family the fortitude to bear the loss and may their souls rest in peace. |

Instead of everyone to come together to put an end to government failure , we want to turn this against each other, very unfair This a 22 stories building, no helicopter to off fire, I remember some years ago when our family business was burning in the south south , I went to the state fire service board and ELF but unable to make it to SHELL. Elf security men didn’t allow me into their company premises but listen and sent the message to their fire dept, 40mins later the state Fire Service came with 2 Fire Service trucks, the more they spray their water , the more the fire because part of the burning building had house Dunlop and rubber slippers made of highly inflammable materials that requires certain chemicals in the water to extinguish the fire 🔥 , all efforts Zero result, until a single Fire Truck from Elf pull over 3 hrs later Believe me, ELF firemen put off the inferno in just 30min , I doubt they even used half of their water because the water contained all necessary chemicals, and so it was very effective, while the state water was serving as petrol fueling the fire for 3hrs , Elf water served as perfect cure because it instantly off the fire where ever they sprayed it, there was no need for another water truck and by the time Shell SPDC Fire truck arrived , the fire has already off I think there is need for proper monitoring and supervision of state Agencies for efficiency , I heard that fire started on the 4th Floor , I wasn’t there and do not work with the state fire service and so can not say in this case but we definitely need to improve. I also disagree this case was intentional because same Lagos Fire service put off the inferno that threatened the Ojo Alaba furniture village two months ago Thanks With heavy heart, I pray may the Lord stand with those who lost their loved ones |

This is very sad, The government is yet to tell what causes such fire that happens every December period. This is not normal and how can such disasters be prevented? |

I don't even know what to type as my hands are shaking. This is too much for a family to bear. I think people need to undergo safety training and the government should make it mandatory. We should learn to safe our lives first before any other thing. My sincere condolences to their family members. |
