Oladipupo Diya was sentenced to death a month and 10 days before Sani Abacha left the world unexpectedly. Diya was sentenced on Tuesday, April 28, 1998. Abacha passed away on Monday 8 June 1998. Abacha was Nigeria's head of State while Diya was his deputy. The latter was accused, with other military officers, of plans to unseat the Head of State. Aside from Lt. Gen. Diya, some of the alleged plotters include Major General Tunji Olanrewaju, Major General Abdulkareem Adisa, Daniel Akintonde, Edwin Jando, Peters Akinyode, Emmanuel Shode, Major Olusegun Fadipe, and Diya's political advisor, professor Femi Odekunle. The investigation started on 14 February 1998 At the end of their trial in Jos, Plateau State by a 7-man tribunal headed by Victor Malu Diya and five of the military officers were sentenced to death and were to face firing squad. Four others were sentenced to life imprisonment while the remaining three were to stand between two and 14 years behind bars. However, while waiting for their day, Abacha passed away. They were later released and got pardoned. Diya was pardoned twice. First by Abdulsalami Abubakar and later, by President Goodluck Jonathan. 📷: Exclusive photo of Diya and his convicted colleagues in 1998.

Why did he need to be pardoned twice...? ![]() First by abdusalami and then good luck. Anyway, death as they say is inevitable. One can only prolong the day but it comes eventually. The people in the picture Diya and adisa are both late now. Somehow death always wins in the end! |

Likewise Baba Obj,,Gen Abacha death led to endof many senior military officers.Personally I think Abacha military administration is underscored,,its one of the better administration compared to the sets of looters marauding as people's people |

Who was the man in the middle and the woman at the back? I can see late adisa. Abacha really dealt with them that time especially the yoruba generals among them. |

Funny enough this was more like a Yoruba coup going by the names up there, but it wasn't termed that way. So why was the other dubbed an Igbo coup ? Just mulling over |

Old story. They are dead and gone now. Na that Adisa own pain me pass. The man got into an accident in Nigeria then was flown to London immediately for treatment. They will never make things standard in the country. When they receive a scare, they run to the white man for aid. We will always be slaves to the pale faces. |

Gen Abacha didn't realise that it was him that God Almighty would carry out that very sentence on less than 3 months later when Gen Abacha suddenly and miraculously died in the night God Almighty had staged his own Coup Some Nigerians can pray because God Almighty definitely heard them Gen Diya's son later said in an interview that it was on the very day his father was supposed to be executed that Gen Abacha died and that threw his father's enemies into confusion |

brain54:Because our policy makers don't check the record book. We should have a department (which we do) that stores and manages all archives, with the government consulting them before making any decision, especially decision that speaks to history |

T9ksy:It's not an Igbo coup. Igbo people did not do any town hall meeting to agree on a coup. It's a few military boys coup. They don't represent the value of their ethnicity. |

Chai! The death of General Sanni Abacha really saved Diya, Adisa, Olarenwaju and others. There was even plans to eliminate them despite Abacha's sudden death but God saved them. Meanwhile the death of Sanni Abacha was well celebrated o. Even in the barracks soldiers were jubilating and gyrating. |

If this coup had succeeded they would have still called it Igbo coup. Till date the still refer to Kaduna Nzogwu led coup as Igbo coup. But this one that is mainly them they will not promote it to last. Then to distract you they way say it didnt succeed. |

The coup they never accepted that it ever happened even with proven video evidences.. I am happy to see some participants in that coup like Major Bello owning up to their actions these days. Those are Abdulkareem Adisa, Oladipo Diya and Gen Olarenwanju. They actually organised a coup that would have snuffed life out Abacha, and when they were caught red handed, the Lagos media houses went into overdrive with all sorts of lies.. They made it look like it was victimisation. But it was not. They claimed it never happened the same way they claimed that Awolowos FIRST COUP was a lie even after the genocidal im-p was dutifully tried and sentenced by a fellow Yoruba judge.. |

In every coup, the majority of those who plan and execute it are usually from a particularly section of the country Diya's attempted coup was no different except that it was nipped in the bud at the 11th hour Had Abacha not died, Obasanjo, Diya, Olarenwaju, Adisa and Fadipe would all have faced televised execution |

Och77:There was no coup. It was all theatre Abacha set up to remove his second in command. Unfortunately for Abacha he died before these men. A day to their planned death it was Abacha's death that was announced. These people walked free because it was a kangaroo coup planned by Abacha with the Bamayis |

gidgiddy:You think it would have been easy to do that? Do you know the population of Yoruba in the country and their influence across the world?. Actually it was reported that the US President called Abacha and urged him not to kill Diya and co. Remember too that Obasanjo was convicted of treason and Abacha was not able to execute him |

lawani:There's never been anyone was found guilty of coup plotting in Nigeria that was not executed. The only thing that saved the necks of Obasanjo, General Diya, General Olarenwaju, General Adisa, Major Fadipe etc is that Abacha died shortly before they were to executed. Had it not been for that. You would have been watching old videos of their 1998 execution on YouTube today |

You see now that GEJ pardoned Diya again but nairaland Tinubu boys kept saying that GEJ's government was an Igbo government. May God bless GEJ. Now E reach Nnamdi kalu turn, Bulaba sent him to Sokoto on life imprisonment. Una bombom don open wide for every region of the country to see una for who una be. |

gidgiddy:Obasanjo was actually sentenced to death before it was commuted to twenty five years in prison. Abacha was not up to the task of rounding up all senior Yoruba generals and executing them for whatever reason |
