“I Can’t Speak or Walk Properly Again” — Toyin Lawani Accuses Lagos Hospital of Medical Mismanagement

Popular Nigerian fashion designer and entrepreneur, Toyin Lawani, has accused a Lagos-based private medical facility, Euracare Hospital, of alleged medical mismanagement following complications she claimed arose after undergoing surgery at the hospital. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

Lawani, the founder of Tiannah Empire, made the allegations public on Sunday through a series of posts shared on her Instagram page, where she detailed what she described as a traumatic medical experience following a spinal surgery carried out at the hospital.

According to the celebrity designer, the procedure, which she said cost nearly ₦100 million, resulted in severe complications that significantly affected her mobility and speech. She alleged that shortly after the surgery, she temporarily lost the use of her legs and developed a serious lung infection.

Lawani claimed that her condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to multiple emergency medical interventions. She alleged that she suffered bleeding in her lungs shortly after the initial operation and was rushed back into surgery the following day.

In her account, the entrepreneur further alleged that she later stopped breathing, prompting doctors to puncture her lungs in an emergency procedure. She claimed the intervention damaged her vocal cords, leaving her unable to speak properly.

Lawani also stated that after being discharged, she lost the use of both legs and had to be readmitted to the same hospital. She said she subsequently contacted an ear, nose, and throat specialist in the United Kingdom, who reportedly advised the Lagos-based doctors to carry out another surgery to remove a tracheotomy tube and determine whether she could breathe independently.

She disclosed that she was eventually flown to the UK with her family, where further medical examinations allegedly revealed infections and lumps in her lungs, requiring an additional surgical procedure. According to her, she has remained in and out of hospital since then as a result of the complications.

Expressing frustration over what she described as poor handling of her medical case, Lawani accused the hospital of placing financial considerations above patient welfare. She said she intends to pursue legal action once her health condition improves.

As of the time of filing this report, Euracare Hospital has not issued an official response to the allegations.
