Akran is the title. Not oba of badadry
But Akran of Badagry
he still referred to as Oba Akran because he is a king in yorubaland land while Akran is the title he hold over badagry kingdom as the paramount ruler.

Is this a Yoruba name?

May the gods rest his soul.
It is an Egun name. However, the truth is that the Egun people see themselves as a sub-group of the larger Yoruba ethnic group now. As a royal from Lagos, I can state this authoritatively—there is no one from Badagry who does not speak the Yoruba language fluently, including the late Akran. Also, there are indigenous Yoruba natives of Badagry.

you are right…..Yoruba is still the dominant language though the Egun language is still very much used to communicate amongst the locals but they all still speak and understand Yoruba.

thats not a Yoruba name….badagry people are predominantly Egun people a sub group of the Yoruba tribe and they also have the Aworis who are also indigenous to badagry but not as much in population as the egun people.
The question here is: Is Egun from Yoruba or another tribe different from Yoruba, Lagos and Nigeria entirely? Just asking

Was that necessary?

Ask the indigenes of Badagry if their King is/was ever addressed as "Oba"

Leave all those Reporters and their Editors to their ignorance.

The title is Akran of Badagry and not Oba Akran of Badagry.

Egun is a sub group of the Yoruba just like the Awori, Egba, ijebus, ijesha etc which all have distinct dialects but all speak and understand one unified Yoruba language which is the Oyo dialects….so yes, it right to call them Yorubas and don’t forget they are also found in Benin republic just as we have indigenous yorubas there too.

A very Peaceful King 👑 who does not mingle his throne with Politics.
Because of how he respected himself and do not run after politicians, he was highly respected by all.
Rest in Peace 🕯️

Truly a peaceful man. I visited his palace once on official duty. We were warmly received even though he had a right to be angry for some reasons.

May his soul rest in perfect peace.

Egun is not a sub-group of Yoruba.

The Egun people are the same with Fon people in Benin Republic.

They are a distinct ethnic group who were once under the control of Old Oyo Empire.

Their language is very different from Yoruba

In Lagos state chieftaincy, Oba and Akran are two different kingship titles domiciled in Lagos state. There's no such thing as Oba Akran. You're either an Oba or an Akran. The fact that Journalists are novice to this does not make it correct. The title given to the late king is Akran of Badagry. People try to insert "Oba" into the title to let others know they are refering to a king as the title Akran is not so popular among many Nigerians.

Ogu/Egun is considered a separate tribe at least in Larger Lagos and not a subdivision/dialect of Yoruba unlike the Ijebus etc as someone mentiomed up there.

I'm from the Ogu/Egun tribe in Ogun state. We've been having problems having a king in my town because Ogun state government has not been able to domicile "Akran" as a recognized kingship title unlike Lagos state. We cannot as well accept "Oba" title because that would automatically make us Yoruba and subotdinate to Yoruba kings and would erase our tribe.

undecided you are the one confusing yourself…….they are still referred to as oba because they are all kings in yorubaland….the oba is the local word we use to describe kings in yorubaland regardless of the title…..so I still don’t understand what you are arguing about undecided
