Exactly, you got it, @Dsonof dsoil1 just refused to be enlightened.

The original eguns can never claim to be Yorubas, non of the eguns that I have met , hundreds of them never claim to be Yoruba, even their names are very unique however a very few of them have Yoruba names yet they lay claim to their ancestry being from Dahomey. The eguns are in Badagry and Ipokia yet distinct and unique in their ways.
the Egun (or Ogu) are a distinct ethnic group, closely related to the Fon and Ewe, known for their unique Gbe language and culture, predominantly living in coastal areas of Nigeria (Lagos/Ogun) and the Republic of Benin, originating from Dahomey migrations, and forming a significant part of the local population with unique traditions

Speak the Egun (Gbe Egun) language, with dialects like Thevi, Xwela, Seto, and Toli, distinct from mainstream Yoruba but sharing roots with other Gbe languages

Why are people arguing the fact

Most Egun bear names with deep meaning, can't collate all but some.

Seveo: Creator is passionate with word.

Sejro: Creator's desire.

Sewanu: Creator be thanked.

Sesinu: Creator's own thing.

Vyhutu: For the sake of a child.

Johnde: One good thing.

Hosu: Several tidings.

Mausi: God's belonging.

Sonayon: Tomorrow will be well.

Totai: Father at market.

Dethin: Prayer is real.

Senami: God's gift to me.

Mehgonu: Individual personal issue.

Mendo: Whom do I have?

Egba clan is pure yoruba. My friend but we must accept that Egun aren't Yoruba

It's like arguing that Okrika are Igbo or Tiv is Hausa irrespective they speak Hausa

The very beauty of Nigeria is knowing that we have many tribes that's it

So bearing OBA AKRAN DOESN'T MEAN THAT EGUN RE YORUBA

JUST LIKE bearing Emir of Kano doesn't name that Hausa are Arabs

Egun is spoken mainly in Badagry, parts of Lagos State, Ogun State, and coastal areas near Benin Republic. While Yoruba and Egun influence each other, many everyday words are different.

Common Egun vs Yoruba Words

English Egun (Ogu) Yoruba

Hello Wɛzɔ́ Bawo / E kaaro
Thank you Akpé Ẹ ṣé
Yes Ɛ̃ Béẹ́ni
No Áyi Rárá
Come Va Wá
Go Yi Lọ
Eat Dù Jẹ
Drink Nɔ̀ Mu
Water Tɔ Omi
Food Dù Oúnjẹ
House Xɔ̀ Ilé
Person Ame Ènìyàn
Child Vi Ọmọ
Father Tɔ̀ Baba
Mother Nɔ̀ Iya
Friend Xɔ̃ Ọrẹ́
Good Nyi Dáadáa
Bad Vɔ Búburú
How are you? E fo? Ṣé daadaa ni?
I am fine Me nyi Mo wa daadaa

Key Differences Between Egun and Yoruba

1. Sound System

Egun uses:

x, v, ɔ, ɛ, ɖ, ɣ sounds
Yoruba does not use these.

Example:

Egun: Xɔ̀ (house)

Yoruba: Ilé

2. Word Structure

Egun words are often shorter and sharper:

Va (come) vs Wá

Dù (eat) vs Jẹ

3. Language Family

Yoruba → Defoid language

Egun → Gbe/Ewe language
They are not dialects of the same language, just neighbors that influence each other.

I DO NOT SEE THEM AS IGBO, IF THEY SAID THEY ARENT IGBO.... SO BE IT !

Why are you sounding angry? What's that! They have the right to identify as anything just like Ikwerre

Egun not being Yoruba doesn't change anything

Please read sir,

Egun history centers on migration from the Kingdom of Dahomey (modern-day Benin) to Nigeria's coastal areas, especially Badagry, driven by 18th-century wars, settling in Lagos and Ogun States as a distinct, resourceful group known for fishing, salt production, and unique traditions, preserving their identity while integrating into wider Yoruba communities and becoming vital to local economies, particularly in Badagry.

Origins & Migration
Ancestral Homeland: The Egun (also called Ogu) people originated from areas within the former Kingdom of Dahomey, including Whydah, Allada, and Weme.

Reason for Migration: They migrated to escape conflicts and wars in Dahomey, with settlement in Badagry occurring as early as the 15th century for security, though later waves were in the 18th century.
Settlements: They established significant communities in Badagry (Lagos State) and parts of Ogun State (like Ipokia), near the Benin border, becoming a major ethnic group in these regions.

Life in Nigeria

Economic Activities: Their coastal location led to a strong focus on fishing, maritime trade, salt production, and coconut processing, with women skilled in crafts like pottery and weaving.
Cultural Identity: Despite intermarriage and integration with Yoruba communities, the Egun maintained their distinct language, traditions, and unique cultural practices.

Badagry's Hub: Badagry became a crucial Egun stronghold, a center for cultural exchange, and a significant contributor to the local economy due to its Atlantic access.

Key Aspects
Egungun (Masquerades): While "Egun" refers to the people, it's also linked to the powerful Egungun tradition of ancestral masquerades, where costumed figures embody ancestors, though the people's history predates widespread knowledge of these specific practices in Nigeria.

Cultural Resilience: Their history showcases adaptability, as they built thriving communities while preserving their heritage, contributing significantly to the cultural tapestry of Southwestern Nigeria.
