Respect the Olubadan Stool or Face Consequences” – Ibadan Traditional Stakeholders Warn Alaafin

Ibadan traditional stakeholders comprising monarchs, Mogajis, Baales, and prominent sons and daughters of Ibadanland have once again cautioned the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade, against any form of disrespect towards the revered stool of the Olubadan and the Ibadan traditional institution.

The stakeholders condemned the conduct of Oba Owoade, who was reported to have stretched out his hand while seated to greet the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Adewolu Ladoja, during a function held today at the Agodi Government House, Ibadan. They described the action as a gross insult to the Olubadan and the entire Ibadan traditional institution.

According to them, the uncultured act, which was reportedly ignored by the Olubadan, should be taken as a clear warning. They stressed that any further disrespect from the Alaafin would be met with a strong and decisive response from Ibadan traditional stakeholders, including Kabiyesis, chiefs, Mogajis and Baales.

In a statement jointly signed by the President of Ibadan Mogajis, Mogaji Asimiyu Ariori, and the Coordinator of the Ibadan Compound Peace Initiative (ICPI), Mogaji Dr. Nurudeen Akinade, the action of Oba Owoade was described as an embarrassment of the highest order.

The duo stated that Ibadan traditional stakeholders are fully prepared to decisively address any act capable of bringing disrepute to the Ibadan traditional institution.

They further emphasized that Oba Adewolu Ladoja surpasses Oba Owoade in age, achievements, social standing, political exposure, business success, leadership pedigree, and his position as the custodian of Ibadan traditional affairs.

The statement read in part:
“The continuous disrespect of the Alaafin towards the stool of Olubadan and Ibadan traditional institution is becoming intolerable. If Governor Seyi Makinde fails to caution him and Ibadan people are pushed into reacting, the Alaafin will regret his actions.

“We have records of repeated uncultured behaviour towards Ibadan traditional stools. This must stop. Ibadanland will not tolerate further aggravation.

“Ibadan people are not cowards. We are fearless, but we have chosen restraint in the interest of peace.

“Our culture and tradition are sacred. Anything capable of ridiculing them will be firmly resisted.

“The Alaafin cannot come into our territory, sit down, and stretch his hand to greet our highly revered 82-year-old Olubadan.

“Oba Ladoja is a former Senator, former Governor, an international figure, and a successful businessman.

“The Alaafin may choose not to greet the Olubadan, but stretching his hand while seated is an insult to the entire Ibadan traditional institution.

“Ibadanland has never been subordinate to the Alaafin — Ibadan man

Respect begets Respect.

Especially when you are really a ceremonial king with no real political authority.

King wey dem dey give appointment letter and wey dey collect salary.

In other words, you are a mere civil servant.

Not suprised. Same man that refused to honour a lot of the kings that came for his coronation but instead quickly ran to Sokoto and Ilorin to pay homage to Fulanis Emirs that sanctioned the destruction of Oyo Ile. He was even bowing in to the Emir in Ilorin. He is also good friend with that Emir wannabe in Iwo that is equally misbehaving.

We know Oyo owns Yorubaland and the Yoruba identity but Alaafin should calm down abeg. The empire is long gone.

Oyo does not own Yorubaland. The Yorubaland in question is not the present day Yorubaland.

The documented Yorubaland he owns are: Towns of Oyo Atiba, Awe, Akinmarin, Ilora, Iseyin, Papa, Tede. and Sabe. Most of those towns are also no longer in existence.

Alafin really needs to work on his relationship with this other kings…. It doesn’t portray the Yoruba culture well to the society seeing perceived feud amongst its kings over seniority issues.

They do. They sign the treaty on behalf of us all and they also own the Yoruba identity. Wether it’s the present or not. Little can be done about that now.

In that treaty, do you know that Ife and other kingdoms also signed separately.

I have attached the towns he signed for in my earlier comment.

Ife's signature below at the same time the Alafin signed for the Yoruba towns (Oyo Atiba, Awe, Akinmarin, Ilora, Iseyin, Papa, Tede. and Sabe.)

Because Ife is extremely ancient. As in very ancient. The dug up artifacts proved the city to be very ancient.

The present Badagry king that died even said they were originally from Ife along the Ewe in Togo.

Ibadan became an empire of its own and help ensure that Kurunmu did not tell the Alaafin to commit suicide. Ibadan defied the Oyo mesi, then destroyed Ijaiye that was protecting Oyo to prove a point that Ibadan were now the new overlords.

Ibadan also collected tribute from Eastern Yoruba lands (Ondo and Ekiti). Something the Oyo empire was never able to achieve.

Did you notice only the Oyo treaty has the Yoruba name? That’s why the Oyos owned the name exclusively. You can see that Ife didn’t use the name. It was later that every Yoruba chose to accept the Yoruba identity for uniformity. So whenever anyone talks about Yoruba and Yorubaland, one is literally referring to old Oyo land (which doesn’t covered the whole lands of the descendants of Odua of course). I think that’s where the pride of the new Alaafin is coming from but he failed to realize its a new order in town. No descendants of Oodua still owes their loyalty to Oyo. I’m pretty sure he will realize soon that he’s just the Alaafin of Oyo ile and has no subject anywhere anymore.

His town is very small compared to Ibadan and this Olubadan senior am in all ramifications

At least he should stretch his hand while standing,...

If the Olubadan take that handshake it would appear he was bowing to the Alaafin

We all never used the Yoruba name. The yoruba name was recent. Prior to everyone using Yoruba, we were called by our tribes e.g. Ijebu. Ife, Ijebu, Awori, e.t.c

- Ife, Ijebu, Ondo, Ekiti were never part of the Oyo empire.

The Ga in Ghana would even tell you that they left Ife before the formation of Oyo. Oyo is recent in Yoruba kingdoms.
Ife ana in Togo and Ife kekere (Usen) in Edo state would all tell you they left from Ife.

The Aworis in Lagos would also always remind you that their progenitor, Olofin Ogunfunminire, was an Ife Prince.

Ife is the source of every descendants of Oduduwa. So it’s only common sense to revere your source. There was nothing lost about Ife. Ife was never an empire that lost his power or something. Oyo was an empire. Ife is like what someone would refer to as “Family house”

Seems this aalafin oyo forced himself there. It's like he is not loved at all even among the kings. Too much disrespect. He likes to create unnecessary beef everywhere with everyone.
Even you are having beef with someone, there is always a mature way to handle that. There is what Yoruba called "oju aye". At least do that and save your self from unnecessary drama.
