A total of 11 ships have arrived at Apapa, Tincan and Lekki ports in Lagos, waiting to discharge fresh fish, diesel, bulk salt,..

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) stated this in its publication – ‘Shipping Position’, a copy of which was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos.

The document noted that 31 ships laden with petroleum products, food items and other goods were expected to arrive in Apapa, Lekki and Tin-Can Island Ports from Jan. 13 to Jan. 27.

NAN also reports that 22 other ships are at the ports discharging containers, diesel, bulk urea, gasoline, bulk wheat, crude oil, soya beans, bulk salt, fresh fish, bulk sugar and bulk fertiliser.

Reflecting on the food crisis from a year ago, it is clear how the actions of Northern suppliers shaped the market. At that time, many Northern traders intentionally hoarded essential goods, driving the price of beans as high as 180,000. Today, that same quantity has plummeted to 53,000.

Last year, we faced severe shortages of basic staples like onions, tomatoes, and pepper. Northern suppliers boldly claimed they would rather export these products to neighboring countries than sell them locally, forcing the government to step up border policing.

In response to this, the Tinubu administration (Asiwaju) strategically approved food import permits. This move has directly countered the hoarding tactics used by these regional suppliers. Many of them took out significant bank loans to stock up on food, betting on continued scarcity to maximize profits. Now that imported goods are stabilizing the market, those who hoarded are facing bankruptcy—a direct consequence of trying to hold the country's food supply to ransom.

Both are not produced in Nigeria

Why do we have to import all these. CBN will have to source dollars to pay the bills after receiving naira equivalent.
We should be the one selling and exporting items to the rest of the world.

I want to believe the bulk salt isn't cooking salt. Maybe some other industrial salts.
I didn't know we import sugar as well.
