It Took Me Over 7 Years To Make My First ₦1 Million – Nollywood Actor Eso Dike by alphonsojidebab(op): 7:39am On Jan 14
Nollywood actor Eso Dike has opened up about his slow but determined journey to financial stability in the Nigerian film industry, revealing that it took him more than seven years to earn his first ₦1 million from acting.

The actor made the revelation during an interview with renowned media personality Chude Jideonwo, where he spoke candidly about patience, perseverance, and the realities of building a career in Nollywood. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

Reflecting on his early years in the industry, Dike explained that progress was far from instant, noting that financial growth came gradually despite his passion and consistency.

“It took me more than seven years to make my first one million naira as an actor,” he revealed.

According to him, the journey was marked by uncertainty and limited opportunities, but he remained committed, choosing long-term growth over shortcuts.

Dike also shared that acting was not his original career path. Before fully embracing Nollywood, he pursued a legal career, having studied Law at the University of Benin before proceeding to the Nigerian Law School.

Despite being professionally trained as a lawyer, Dike said his love for acting eventually pushed him to follow his passion, even when financial rewards were slow to come.

His story has since sparked conversations online, with many praising his honesty and using his experience as motivation for young creatives navigating the challenges of Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

Like I said before now NOLLYWOOD is the most wicked industry on earth.

genuinely dislike the Nigerian entertainment industry with every fiber of my being.

There is little to no love in that space—only clout and cold calculations. Take Funke Akindele for example. This is someone whose movies have publicly recorded box-office earnings running into hundreds of millions of naira in a single year. That is not speculation; Nigerian box-office data and cinema records confirm it.

Now tell me: if someone who makes ₦500 million+ from just one movie cannot spare ₦20 million to support a colleague in distress—even if they are not on speaking terms—what does that say about us as an industry?

₦20 million is less than 5% of ₦500 million. In any serious society, that kind of gesture would be seen as basic humanity, not charity. It would send a powerful message that human life matters more than ego, beef, or brand image.

But here, success is celebrated loudly, while compassion is rationed carefully. That is the verifiable truth, and that is why many of us are tired of pretending this industry is built on love.

No one became a star in a day, the big footballers earning £500k weekly today was once earning €5000 monthly playing football.

When you start acting you get minor roles for some years till you are able to land lead roles, only actors playing lead roles or supporting roles like Genevieve, Omotola, Ramsey, Bob Manuel, KOK, Pete Edochie, Clem Ohaneze, Kate Henshaw e.t.c earned big checks in those days.

It takes the males time to make their money, but the female actresses seem to make theirs within 2 - 3 weeks of joining the industry despite never acting in any major roles

You speak like someone who hasn't really made money for himself. So you would support a colleague you're not on speaking terms with, with N20m? When you're not Father Christmas? Did you steal the money? If a movie makes 500m at the box office, does it mean it all goes to one person?

Do not limit this to movie industries - It's just a sample of our population; it tells more of who we are as people. Most of the people who help in Nigeria help for"
1. Spiritual reasons (perhaps they have asked them to doo Saara (alms giving - sacrifice)
2. Because they themselves are looking unto God for higher miracle (givers never lack) - Still spiritual - See sowing
3. For eye service
4. Top pepper somebody
5. To get recognition and more followers (VDM and other content creators) - Attract people to their page
6. Just to appear as a philanthropist, a giver.
7. To get attention and money - By the time they start helping others and filming it, they will get many anonymous donor.

Most Nigerians appearing to be a giver do it for one reason or the other

Like, I'm surprised at the guys arithmetic. Even if the profit after all expenses was 500m, how can you say she should give 20m to just one person.

I get your point but you're also sounding VERY COLD and EMOTIONAL bro!
That's her money , not "their money or our Money", you can't stand on your moral high horse and specify how much or a percentage of what an individual should "give away" as Charity from their gross earnings... what sort of entitlement and lack of accountability is that...o wrong nau!!

While I am not for or against the cogent point you raised, we have to set the records straight. Funke only gets a fraction of that money while the cinemas (where they are shown) take a significant chunk.

Besides, those moviemakers spend a lot of money making cinema-grade films. It's not like your regular YouTube films. I remember watching Eagle Wing (that movie was something else) some years back and the producer said it cost them over N300 million. So, what's announced is a revenue, whose profit may not be up to quarter that sum.

Do you know how many people she already supports, whether in distress or not ?

Nigerians are useless Walahi, now someone that works hard to make money is a problem, she cannot determine what to do with her own money, we must choose for her.

You wonder about some of the things you read here sometimes.

Hello bro?

Learn to ask questions if you don't know. This Funke talk just showed you don't know how this things work. The money quoted is not going to be entirely Funke's and don't be surprised if you're told she gets between 20-40% of that. From that 20-40% na hin she go take pay actors and other crew members.

I understand the point you're trying to make, but I just want you to know that all the money quoted are not what they get.
