A mass grave containing the remains of 21 migrants of various nationalities was discovered in Ajdabiya city, eastern Libya.

The Internal Security Agency's Ajdabiya branch raided a farm of a Libyan human smuggler with criminal records on the outskirts of the city and found several migrants being held for ransom in a makeshift prison in poor conditions.

The agency reported that 21 migrants were killed by the smuggler after their families failed to pay the ransom.

The human smuggler was arrested and referred to the competent authorities for trial.

Local people and activists demanded a death sentence for the human smuggler for this heinous crime against humanity.

At least 21 African migrants have been confirmed dead following a brutal ransom-related killing by a Libyan human smuggler in Ajdabiya city, eastern Libya, authorities have revealed.

The tragic discovery was made after operatives of the Internal Security Agency (ISA), Ajdabiya branch, raided a farm on the outskirts of the city on Wednesday, January 14, 2026. According to security officials, the raid uncovered a makeshift detention facility where several African migrants were being held in deplorable conditions while their families were pressured to pay ransom for their release.

Investigations revealed that 21 migrants of different African nationalities were allegedly killed by the smuggler after their families failed to meet the ransom demands. Their remains were later discovered in a mass grave within the farm premises.

The suspect was immediately arrested and has been handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities for prosecution.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage among local residents, civil society groups, and human rights activists, many of whom have described the killings as a crime against humanity. Calls have intensified for the suspect to face the maximum penalty under the law, including the death sentence.

Libya remains a major transit route for migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean into Europe, with thousands often falling victim to human traffickers, extortion, torture, and abuse.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing to identify possible accomplices and to rescue any remaining victims connected to the smuggling network.

When you warn them not to travel through the desert, they will say, "any country is better than Nigeria."

When the criminal gangs get hold of them, you'd be shocked at th extent of the cruelty and horror inflicted on them. Their immigration and police are no better. They rape them daily. Hit them hard with big sticks on a regular basis that even run mad. They could no longer endure it.

There was even an incident when a Nigerian deportee came back emanciated and died. Only God knows what she witnessed.

The drive for survival and for greener pastures has continued to force millions of West African young men and women to gamble with death in attempts to cross over to Europe and other parts of the world. This quest to escape poverty, hunger, unemployment and insecurity, among other reasons, caused a major segment of Nigeria’s population to seek alternatives for better livelihood prospects for themselves and their families.

Those seeking economic survival see irregular migration as the best alternative, given the difficulty and resources involved in migrating through regular and legitimate routes. In many instances, very few of the original number who set out on these dangerous journeys live to tell their stories. While many regularly drown in the Mediterranean Sea, many also die in the deserts, and others are sold as slaves in a modern slave market.

Most of the victims of this trade are from West Africa. Many of them leave home with expectations of getting to Europe and other destinations perceived to have better economic prospects for them, but they end up in the slave merchant nets in North Africa. The victims are put in camps and sold in open markets in Libya, while the international community watches in silence. The geographical location of Libya renders it a transit route for migrants journeying to Italy and many other parts of Europe.

It was the prime reason France conquered Algeria, to stop the raiding of the European coast for slaves.
