Lagos 2027: APC Power Brokers Mull Ambode Return as Seyi Tinubu’s Governorship Bid Likely Shifted to 2031

Lagos APC power brokers are considering a comeback for former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode in 2027, potentially pushing Seyi Tinubu's governorship bid to 2031. This move is seen as a way to address Epe district's marginalization and create space for Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, to contest in 2031 when his father completes his presidential term .

Ambode's possible return is linked to discontent in Epe over his removal after one term, and stakeholders are demanding the zone be allowed to complete its tenure. The Governance Advisory Council (GAC) is weighing options, considering Ambode or former Health Minister Tunji Alausa as successors to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in 2027 .

Seyi Tinubu, 40, has been touted by youth and diaspora groups, but party leaders advise him to focus on supporting his father's re-election bid. Other potential contenders include Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, and Abdul-Azeez Adediran (Jandor), who has already declared his ambition .

This is the only way Tinubu can seek to preserve his dynasty without flipping the cart. Bringing Ambode to complete his one term and handover to Seyi in 2031 as fielding Seyi in 2027 may be too risky due to revolt. The only problem with this permutation is that it will go south if Tinubu fails to win his own re-election. There will be a realignment and consolidation of power by Ambode and other power brokers to edge out Tinubu completely from the power equation. It will be the ultimate revenge.

PBAT does not even want a two term governor in Lagos state again, Sanwo-Olu had to go begging for his second term to be granted him. So by Jagaban’s moves, it’s not a must for Ambode to come back to complete what they are against in the first place, which is second term for Lagos State governors.
