People should not live like this indefinitely. Nigeria is not a welfare state so organising to help them is problematic.

Understandable, they want to live free in areas close to their source of income but like farmers who move farms when an area becomes majorly residential, they have to recognise that they have to move up or downstream when the area gets developed to not plan for this is not wise.

Mature decisions is expected from every adult. Even businesses like block industries move location.

Never wait for government to make life decisions for you and be grateful for periods when you were able to live rent free it’s a privilege that not a lot of people get. Also come together as a community to plan the move as a problem shared is a problem halved.

The demolition is inevitable.

Those people normally APC block votes during elections. They are stuanch APC supporters. Infact that’s the reason the Lagos state government have soft pedaled on Makoko demolition for years!
That’s good of them. But Lagos state don try give them many many years to relocate. The grace period is so much that they should have demolished that area during Fashola tenure

That validates the saying that if the preferred is not available, the available becomes the preferred. Was the useless govt not supposed to provide for them a conducive place for evacuate the people to? Should the Lagos state govt not be ashamed that people are living in slums in "the almighty Lagos?"

A heartless and insensitive Lagos state govt. Fashola started this madness and demolished sone of their buildings at Makoko and Ilubirin . I guess it is time now for Sanwo-Olu to complete the madness, all the name of development and building befitting buildings for the rich to occupy while the poor can go to hell
.
You can go and start living there since you love the place so much
Re: Makoko Residents Protest Property Demolition by orriyomi33(m): 8:54pm On Jan 16
The people mostly Eguns, Agatu and others majorly from Benin love the life on water maybe probably because that is a part of their lifestyle as most of them are into Fishing business.

From my interactions with them, I can say with good authority that some of them have enough money to get a standard apartment in Yaba/Oyingbo.

Majority in that place are not Nigerians but from Benin Republic.

They came to fish and trade.
Not that's what the world see: Where is it located? Lagos Nigeria.
Are they Africans? Yes.
EOD. That's why they don't value you people as human beings. Who on his or her right senses will prefer to live on dirty water in this 21st century??

poverty makes them to live there
Poverty made them and they took advantage of people coming to visit and donate money to them without critically thinking how to improve their lives??
Ambode was the Government with the ultimatum to destroy that place but he gave them Quit Notice since 2015, up till now they couldn't have found place to resettle? After millions and millions they collect from tourists and world donors??
Black man is his Problem! That's why you aren't valued any where in the world. Check out African country called Morocco hosting AFCON and compare it to any Sub-Saharan country.

Be calming down bros!

Yes they are Africans and then? The Government should let them completely build on the Lagos Lagoon down to where High Tension Cables are situated and when stuff happens you turn around and blame the same Government?

Have you been there before? Do you know what it means to live in such squalor?

Majority of the inhabitants are not from Nigeria and Government have rightly demolish shanties in that space. Let them go back to their country or enter still move away from that space.

Do they pay anything to the Government for Fishing in the Lagoon and the surrounding waters? Do they pay anything to Government before boiling those shacks?

That place is a mess and no sane government should see people living in that environment and allow it to stand for decades.

What have your government done with the various tax being collected? If things were ok will people live in such environment?
All the amount being looted by politicians is enough to make life easy for people of an oil rich country.

Let the poor breathe.
Where was the Lagos State Government when they were settling there?

Re: Makoko Residents Protest Property Demolition by oalandAgents2: 1:59am On Jan 17
The government should have first built huge apartment blocks to resettle these residents, that way there would be less resistance to these demolitions.
Re: Makoko Residents Protest Property Demolition by 2mch(m): 2:55am On Jan 17
Immigration should be on ground to deport them. A lot of them there are not Nigerian. It’s about time they demolish that nuisance settlement.

Baba don't mind them.

Makoko people are majorly from Benin Republic. They only came to fish.

The same way the Elegishi sent them away from Otodo Gbame sometimes ago is just the repeat here.

Why would you be building plank house 200 meters into the Lagos Lagoon? Why and what for.

Let them relocate to Benin Republic 🇧🇯
So Benin republic are not human being . Non of your family member has travelled out before abi.. your mind is filled with pure wickedness, people like you should be fed to crocodiles and pythons.

Yes, it is inevitable, but not the first thing.
Governance is about people.
Plans, purposes, progress.

There are political representatives from that area. How far has government interacted with them to change the story of the inhabitants, remove them from that locality in a responsible manner and integrating them into the wider society.

Or if fishing is their vocation what is government doing to bring investments to the collective to raise their standards of living so that the environment is protected by best practices.

Can the Lagos state government set aside special intervention funds for such derelict communities in it's annual budget for all of the above.

Because the success of any society is judged by the fortunes of the least privileged.

So just as we all criticize the irresponsible poverty fueled behavior of 'born throway' amongst ignorant citizens, the sack, demolish and drive away attitude of government that owes a duty of care and development to citizens is no different.

PS. And if Nigeria or any country is not interested in the welfare of society then exactly what is the purpose of government.

Granted welfarism should not mean government fills your refrigerator with food and cleans your toilet.

But it is responsible for setting standards and organising society around aggregated resources.

Government is like your typical Nigerian communal 'meeting' where you get to know one another, plan, program and progress, set agendas and contribute to a purse to be made accessible to those who are in need such that a healthy standard of living and business is maintained.

That is what government does, that is what government is for.

You obviously don't deserve a response but I would indulge you a tiny bit.

Of course Benin Republic people are humans and should be treated as such but should they be allowed to keep building on the Lagoon so much so they are already extending towards the High Tension Cables on the Lagoon? Assuming one day those Cables snapped and people get killed it is eediots as you that will come out and say Government looked away and let it happened when they could have prevented it.

If Crocodiles and Pythons fed on your ancestors you don't have to extend that as a punishment for others that don't share same opinions as your sorry self.

Do some research, the fact that Brnin Republic people have a floating village back home in Ganvie doesn't mean they should replicate that everywhere they find themselves.
