Abacha era. It started mainly during the June 12 saga when Nupeng went on strike. The alternative (which we used) was coal pot. Gas and kerosene were not available. We occasionally used electric cooker sometimes... when available. Living hell! |

Love800:Nah! Not for those of us who experienced his rule first hand. Just that the economy was still a bit strong but we were being terrorised into submission against our collective will for true democracy. We couldn't even express our views freely in public spaces after a while for fear of being picked up or....Long story! |

That was the first time I chop military koboko at a filling station where we queued to buy kerosene because there was scarcity of it. Saw dust became an option and that gave birth to abacha stove, suddenly, saw dust became an important commodity to poor Nigerians. Biodun556: |

Can’t forget myself and my sister always going to the sawmill whenever we are back from school to get saw dust for cooking . Omo mehn that era was very tough |

Kalulu44:I used it when i was growing up around 1983-1987. my house was very close to a sawmill and it was easier for us getting saw dust .we used it to cook beans mainly on Saturdays but not because we were suffering then sha..it was just basically childhood experiences... |

| Re: Who Witnesse Abacha Stove? (Pictures) by Kalulu44: 10:06pm On Jan 17 |
fxdee:Just like you said, you were using it then not bcus of suffering or anything. But it became pronounced during Abacha's regime which was why it was called "Abacha's stove" |

Kalulu44:I never said I didn't hear people used it. My cousin visited on holiday around that time and said instead of firewood that we were using they were using something called saw dust stove in Osun state.. But I never saw it. Up till today I don't know how they "operated" it. I think it had to do with the fact that there was no saw mill anywhere close to my neighborhood |

I was in the village then, we had fire wood in abundance. We hardly bought things, we grew what we ate and our source of protein was bush meats. We were preparing pounded yam at the village kitchen when the news of Abacha's death was announced on radio. |

Despite Abacha stove and Abacha loot, Nigeria was far better then compared with now. I remember I took 5naira as pocket money to school asides my food box and I enjoyed it. I bought coke for 10 Naira. With Coca-Cola company giving us free drinks when you check under the cover. Now that Abacha is no longer in power why are things worst than when Abacha was in power? I don't think Abacha was as bad as they made us believe. If bread can be 10 Naira under Abacha who was seen as bad, how come that same bread is 400 Naira under a good government ? Or is someone deceiving us? |

Some fuulish* people are still saying Abacha's era was better This stove is a symbol of the prevailing poverty of that era, spiced with brutality never seen in the history of Nigeria. Assassination was so rampart people became used to the news, talk and you go down. GenZ will never understand or imagine that era, it was like North Korea of today , be careful what you wish for. NB: I am not supporting the recklessness of today's political class,if they are not careful history will repeat itself.. |
