The Anambra State Police Command has identified Ifesinachi Ezeolu, a 28-year-old male, as the individual behind the violent conduct of the Agaba Awgbu masquerade.

The Police reiterated that while cultural and traditional practices are respected, no masquerade or cultural activity is allowed to compromise citizens' rights through assault, intimidation, or public disorder.

The Command assured the public that investigations are ongoing to identify other persons involved and reaffirmed its commitment to working with community leaders to ensure peaceful cultural expressions and public safety.
village failures and never-do-wells always hide behind masquerades, village meeting, umunna gatherings to project their bitterness and take aim at their betters

Re: Anambra State Police Command Arrests Man Behind Masquerade (Pic) by Jman06(m):
After smoking weed they'll go and carry masquerades to cause trouble. I nearly beat one yeye masquerade in my village during the Christmas celebration. Instead of the normal cane they're meant to carry, some of them now carry dagger and 2 by 2 woods looking for people's children to kill.

While I support cultural and good traditional practices, I think people who wear masquerades should be very careful with their conducts. Gone are the days when we believed that masquerades were some invincible spirits of our ancestors. We now know that they're humans who can be arrested or subjected to "mending"when they misbehave.

This is against the culture of the land ,though I know that this guys are just after money but exposing the person in the masquerade is very disgusting because of the myth attached to it
He thinks he is untouchable because he wore a mask and feels traditions covers him but fails to understand that the constitution is above tradition.

Anyone that sees a masquerade should run and not confront it. According to Igbo tradition, if a masquerade with many followers confront you, either give it money or run for safety. Be willing to collect the whip or any weapon 🔪 in its possession if u fail to do

I doubt these police men are true Igbo men.
What the masquerade did didn't call for an arrest. They just want to mock Igbo culture .

It's very wrong to place him side by side with the masquerade cloth in the picture. Traditional institutions should be respected irrespective of what the recklesness of the the actors behind them.
Comment with some balance.

If that bike man who hit his head against that Toyota Camry died, the irresponsible masquerade man should get away with murder. It is people like you who support leaders who make Nigeria difficult to live in. So traditional institutions must be used as the plank to cause such damages to people and society?

The irresponsible mask man carried on without control. A young man who was supposed to appear to his people, showcasing the culture decently, earning respect and getting back home peacefully.

He should not be placed side by side with his masquerade clothing. What is the evidence, if not that piece of clothing. You catch an armed robber with an AK47 and say that it is wrong to place him side by side with that gun that was used to commit the crime. Oya, go and extricate him from detention, in the name of traditional institution. An irresponsible fellow who caused severe damages to people’s property, went on stage to damage musical instruments worth millions, that were hired. Who will bear the costs? Traditional institutions, I guess. His entire community was deeply angry at his actions and have applauded the police for that arrest. The fellow should thank God that he was not attacked and injured.

“Traditional institutions should get respected irrespective of what the recklessness of actors behind them”. No wonder we are in this situation as a country. You support horrible leaders who loot the economy, refuse to be accountable and render the citizens poorer day by day, while you praise their terrible actions. Na people like you dem dey call otimkpu.

You are not an Igbo man, so just keep off.
Are masquerades, irrespective of tribe supposed to be violent and uncontrollable? Just wait until a member of your family gets some grevious injury or killed by a masquerader and then allow the person to get away scot free.

Speak for yourself and not Igbo tradition. There is no masquerade that is allowed in Igbo traditional practice to use the whip on anyone.

Masquerades are part of the traditions of a lot of tribes in the south of Nigeria, especially among the Igbos, Akwa Ibomites, Yorubas and Cross riverians. Masquerades are supposed to be reverred and in return the masked people are supposed to carry themselves with dignity, earning greater respect from the people.

In those days, there were particular masquerades that were idolized and heavily fortified and would only appear occasionally. Women and strangers were not permitted to view them, otherwise they would face severe consequences. The lesser masquerades would appear regularly to entertain people and not whip them. That how it’s always been with them, especially in the Igbo land as a whole. The beauty in the whole practice has gone away. Whips were meant to serve as threats to keep people away and not to be used to rob the citizens. Chasing people around was meant to add to the fun of it and not to injure either the citizens or themselves.

Nowadays that myth has been lost because of the irresponsible behavior of the followers and the men behind the masks themselves. They use masquerades to rob citizens. Masqueraders rape women and cause serious bodily harms to citizens. Nowadays we see masquerades publicly engaging in gang fights on the streets. That’s not culture, that’s not tradition. That’s pure foolishness, recklessness and crime. Many of them have died right under their cover. A lot of them move about with daggers under them, waiting to see their perceived enemies and stabbing them to death.

I think by now governments should begin to pass laws to end the criminality of masqueraders and restore the so called cultural practice to the way it used to be. The beauty has almost completely faded away. I hope Governors like Soludo who dealt with those oke ite people can get the likes of aka odo and Agunechemba to tackle those criminals hiding under masquerades.

My lawyer friend sitting by my side told me that the mere fact that he is stripped naked, made to sit on the floor bound in hand-cuff right inside police station while his picture is taken and circulated is a violation of his fundamental rights. But many Nigerians don't even know that.
Re: Anambra State Police Command Arrests Man Behind Masquerade (Pic) by CJStarz: 8:39am On Jan 18
Ur response clearly shows you are not an Igbo man. Igbos revere masquerades. Inasmuch as they are not meant to be violent but masquerades wield canes. Keep run away from them,as mark of 'respect and honour '. It's all part of the fun. This particular one went to harass the DJ for not doing the needful.... pausing the music at his entrance. U could even see that people supported the masquerade.
Arresting and unmasking the masquerade is simply making a mockery of Igbo custom and tradition.
