Why Do Many Nigerians Support Bad Leaders? by omoredia(op): 7:22am On Jul 10, 2024
The support for bad leaders in Nigeria can be attributed to several complex and interrelated factors:

1. **Ethnic and Regional Loyalty**: Nigeria is a diverse country with over 250 ethnic groups. Often, people support leaders from their ethnic or regional backgrounds, hoping they will protect their interests.

2. **Patronage Networks**: Politics in Nigeria is often driven by patron-client relationships, where leaders distribute resources and favors to their supporters in exchange for loyalty.

3. **Poverty and Illiteracy**: High levels of poverty and illiteracy can make people more susceptible to manipulation and short-term incentives, such as cash handouts or promises of jobs.

4. **Lack of Political Alternatives**: In many cases, there may be a perception that viable alternatives are lacking, or the opposition may not be seen as significantly different or better.

5. **Historical Precedents**: There is often a sense of resignation or cynicism, where people believe that all politicians are corrupt, so they might as well support those who offer immediate benefits.

6. **Weak Institutions**: Weak democratic institutions and a lack of accountability mean that leaders can often get away with poor governance without significant consequences.

7. **Fear and Intimidation**: In some cases, fear of retribution or violence can compel people to support certain leaders or political parties.

8. **Media Influence and Propaganda**: The media can play a significant role in shaping public opinion, and in some cases, it may be controlled or influenced by those in power.

These factors create a complex environment where leaders who may not govern effectively continue to receive support.

As long as the leader is from my tribe, even if he's bad it's actually fine...

We know the tribes that has been running this country and whatever the country has become today it was caused by them.

Is the country okay for you?... Pray for your leaders.
Is the country bad for you?... Dont hesitate to swear for your leaders please.
The choice is yours to make.

Are there good leaders in Nigeria?

Whichever one u choose to support is equally bad

And since u have to support one, most go forthe least evil among them all

Why were there protests during Jonathan's regime & none now, despite the fact that things were by far comparatively better than now?

There lies your answer.

That's some Nigerians for you.

Some adults knowingly support leaders like Peter Obi, Nnamdi Kanu, Ojukwu, Ekpa. But will accuse people following a genius as tribalistic. If you like open a million thread to make your tribalistic blames stick. Nothing will change my support for Tinubu because we are never going to have another in this life time except the leader will come from Jupiter. If na from all these present crops of politicians and their proteges, we go tey well.

For the first time a presidential aspirant and later as a candidate said things will be hard at the beginning of his government but will get better over time. We bought a plastic of garri for ₦3700 but now its ₦900, a derica of rice for ₦2000 now it's 900, a derica of beans was ₦2000+ and now it's ₦600. Inflation has never decreased in Nigeria if not we will not be where we are today. For the first time a president is paying directly to local government, a president is building Coastal and superhighway in Nigeria. I swear una de whine. Which brain Atiku get wey he no borrow OBJ in 8 years? Which brain Obi get wey make am fix all Anambra money for bank because of interest? Never seen governance so low, na Obi and Yaya Bello be colleagues.

Okete my cleavage.

That's not my problem, my problem is when their families or tribesmen are angry when I'm using my mouth to swear for a thieving and corrupt politician.

Birds of a feather flock together, when followership is bad, leadership will be bad as well.

Nigeria leaders are products of the Nigeria society,so they replicate what they learnt, the value system as leaders.

The people supports and hail their wrong doing, because they didn't expect otherwise

Leave long talk and tell us how you swore for the bad leaders in your ward, LGA and state and the outcome of all the swears you heaped on them. Then we can discuss about leaders and followers

That should be my own headache and not yours, just let me swear for them as long as I can. It'll become my headache when I swear for them and any of their relatives of tribesmen tries to tell me otherwise.
