Good morning ,

has anyone attended or knows anyone that attended a B1/B2 visa appointment in Lagos since January 1? what was the outcome ? Are they turning people back at the gate or let you enter to waste your time ?

I am asking because my mum has an appointment on the 15th January, in Lagos and we are thinking of just cancelling it as i get the impression it would just be a waste of everyone's time. Appointment 1.5 years in the making that we have been waiting for.

Interestingly, you can still book appointments in Abuja up until March/April 2026 , but only until January 16 in Lagos , even though Uncle T has banned everyone which is bizarre. Why offer appointments if there is a ban?

Anyone with recent experience or insight and happy to share ? This will be most appreciated.
Reports from those who have attended interviews since Jan 1 indicate they are being refused, citing the presidential proclamation as reason. Only those who can prove their visit is in the National interest of the US are being considered. I believe the appointment slots were left open for those in that category.

your mom can still attend the visa interview but she will 100% be denied the visa. Also those with valid visa from last year are not allowed into the US because of the travel ban. The US embassy just don’t want to refund the visa fees that’s why they are still accepting appointments even tho they are not giving visas or allowing Nigerians with valid visas into US. It’s a scam

Because I have been looking for clarification myself
That's my interpretation of the articles- ''the CONSULAR OFFICER is allowed to mandate refundable bonds of up to $15,000 for certain biz and tourist visa with APPLICANTS from countries with high visa overstay rates of deficient screening processes".
The reference to Consular officers and applicants imply that this refers to fresh applicants and not those who already have their visas.
Re: Usa Visit Visa Part 5 by IvoryT: 1:29pm On Jan 08
Thank you for your mail.

The Department of State has no plans to cancel currently scheduled visa interview appointments. Visa applicants who are subject to Presidential Proclamation 10998 may still submit visa applications and schedule interviews, but they may be ineligible for visa issuance or admission to the United States.

Again, should you have any further questions, please read the Department of State of State webpage with information about this Presidential Proclamation.

It seems like they just want people to spend money on visa applications they have no chance of getting. Use your sense.

Stop re-announcing the travel ban. Nigerians are aware of it. It's okay if you don't want to apply. Leave others with their choices. Your post is becoming nuisance sir.

The grammar in the message you quoted said , Nigerians can still apply, so let it be.
Noted. The post is for awareness, not to stop anyone from applying. People can still make their own choices, but sharing information about risks and implications is not a nuisance, it’s responsible.

Typical “I-know-it-all” attitude, expressed without a proper understanding of what actually constitutes a nuisance.

Yes, if your date falls after the 21st of January.

Pls the general public should disregard this post. If your mom is absolutely qualify she will get the visa. Also people with visas have being able to enter the United States after background. Checks.

My immediate younger sister , together with her friends left Nigeria to Texas last Monday (5th of Jan, 2026), after Xmas holiday. Aside her, people with valid U.S visas have been able to enter America without any issues (few friends of mine) except those who does not know what and where they are going.
Hi Efetobore,

Thank you for this. Looking at their official website and some photos someone posted on here, it looks like she does not qualify. I don't think visiting her son and new grandchild is a criteria nor is it in the interest of US National security. ( Unless there is a different criteria i am missing and would appreciate if you can share with me ) . This will also be her very first visa application and potential visit to America. She has been to UK and Canada and has a valid Canadian visa.

New information from the consulate website talks about bond payment at the discretion of the consult officer. This comes into effect on the 21st but her appointment is on the 15th January which is within the window of possibly not qualifying due to the ban.

I wonder if rescheduling it to later than the 21st and then thinking through this bond situation and if to go down that path would be an appropriate approach? Any thoughts ?

Reschedule your mum's interview date till after June 2026 , that's is when it's expected that the ban will be reviewed.

Your mum's purpose of visit would not qualify the exemptions in the proclamation 10998.
Not the proclamation is for B,F,M and J visas
Asides B, the other visas are related to scholars academic and non academic scholars. These other categories have more likely hood to provide documentation to meet the exemptions.
So the consulate won't cancel appointments because there will be some cases that meet the exemption clauses

What airline did they use?

I have a valid b1/b2 issued in 2024 and expires in 2029 and my passport expires next year but I recently booked a flight and I am seeing this on Delta app. Could very well just be a generic message.

Re: Usa Visit Visa Part 5 by Nitta08(f): 6:47pm On Jan 13
I know someone whose dad was denied a visitor’s visa for the first time in 15 years. He was told he’s eligible, but the visa can’t be issued due to the ban.

Just sharing…do with that information what you will.

Did this stop you from booking the flight?
If it didn't, I'd say you should go to proclamation 10998 and print that section that says those with valid visas are exempt.
Just hold it just in case.

Note you might be subject to a visa bond ...it's not clear but you already have your visa so

I wonder why are they still conducting visa interviews when they are not issuing visas. The right thing they should do is refund people back their money and stop processing visas application until the ban is lifted . It’s just greed

You don't need to cancel your appointment just prepare your 15k dollars bond once they approve your visa you pay the bond before the final approval.

Attend, you've already paid. Note for b1b2 from Jan 21 2026 , you maybe Subject to visa bond. It is the officer that interviews you that determines if you pay and what you pay.

Since you said tourism, note you can only enter the US from 3 airports.
Boston Logan airport
Jfk New York
Washington DC Dulles

This would affect the flight airline you book because your port of entry must be one of these before you get to your final destination.

So think on this if this tourism trip is important for you.

I’m curious if interviews are still being entertained after the recent visa freeze. Are folks that have interview dates receiving cancellation notice and getting refunded?
