Economic Conditions Force FCT Residents To Skip Meals by treesun(op): 9:28am On Jan 20
Harsh economic conditions have forced many residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to reduce their daily food intake, with many households no longer able to afford three square meals.

Several residents shared their struggles in interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja.

NAN reports that across Abuja and its satellite towns, families have adopted various coping strategies, such as skipping meals, reducing portion sizes, or switching to cheaper, less nutritious food options.

Mrs. Maryam Silas, a mother of four living in Karu, said her family has been forced to eat only twice a day to survive.

“We used to eat three times a day, but now we manage two. Food prices remain high while income is stagnant. We have to stretch the little I make from my small business to eat and cater to other family needs,” Silas said.

Similarly, Mr. Chinedu Okafor, a security guard residing in Gwagwalada, noted that feeding has become his family’s biggest challenge. “Sometimes we eat only once a day. After paying for rent and transportation, there is almost nothing left for food,” he lamented.

Okafor explained that his wife works as a cleaner at the same company, but their combined income is insufficient. “We have three children between the ages of four and nine. We are prioritizing their education, so very little is left for food after paying school fees,” he said. A food vendor, Mrs. Grace Danjuma, observed that many of her customers now buy food on credit or request smaller portions than before. “People come and beg to buy food on trust. Some will say, ‘Madam, please just give me whatever this small amount of money can afford,’” Danjuma said.

Students and young workers are equally affected.

Zachary Musa, a tertiary student in Bwari who fends for himself, said he often skips meals to save money. “If I eat breakfast, I may not eat again until night. Everything is expensive, and I try to save every penny I can for emergencies,” Musa said.

Commenting on the situation, an economist Dr. Abigail Bako said the trend reflects the devastating impact of inflation and low purchasing power on Nigerian households.

“When people can no longer afford basic nutrition, it becomes a serious social and health concern. There is an urgent need for targeted interventions to protect vulnerable households,” Bako said.

She called for immediate economic relief measures and strategies to stabilize food prices to prevent further deterioration of living standards across the FCT. (NAN)

The fact is economic growth cannot occur in a country where you have over 60% of the population spending over 70% of their income on food, clothing and basic necessities.
The incentive to save it invest, which are the main drivers of economic expansion and ambition in the middle class well be zero.
Coupled with this is the social consequences. A lot of men in Nigeria are dying off in their late forties and fifties now.
This is that stage of life when a man would have gathered enough experience and insight in a certain profession to go off and start something on his own. We lose these critical human resource daily while the younger ones are looking for all means to japa

Tinubu is working and we are seeing the work.
Above is the real work...poverty and misery.

I was at Deidei tomato Market on Saturday last week and the tomato seller told me confidently, that this is the season for tomatoes but cost of transportation is the greatest challenge facing it.

Meaning the cost of transporting one big basket of tomatoes is above the real price of tomatoes. He went further to say that one big basket of tomatoes is currently #5,000 and that they use #5,000 from farm to transport it to the market and they have to sell to make gain despite being perishables.

All those supporting Tinubu on empty bellies would cry this year.

Another achievement of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu led administration. Even Yarimo is not seeing three square meals these days despite his hustle.

The problem with Nigeria's food supply is

1. We are not producing enough, because the number of people in the country has outstripped the ability of our subsistence farming system to feed them

2. One of the wrong things that was done in Nigerian history was to scrap DFFRI. That was an organization set up to fix rural roads among other things and by extension ease of transporting food from village to town.

I mean, dangote said it. A lot of good food spoils because of poor transport.

Governments over the years and financial institutions don't want to finance large scale commerical farming, which adds to the problem

And then your government runs a resource dependent economy. Nice way to make many people poor without trying

The situation is so bad that FCT workers are now on indefinite strike because of high cost of living, rent has become so crazily high that many people's salary can no longer pay for their rent and young boys and girls making money from Yahoo are the ones paying any amount quoted by Landlords and agents at the detriment of civil servants and low income earners.

People living and working in states can afford a lot more now than FCT residents as Tinubu is sending more money to the states unlike in the past when FCT thrived under PDP.

Local contractors that used to keep the FCT economy on steam are being owed by FG and they are protesting daily.
If not for insecurity in many states Abuja would have become empty as many would have migrated back to their states of origin
Re: Economic Conditions Force FCT Residents To Skip Meals by Guyman02: 2:43pm On Jan 20
Abuja is no longer very attractive that's why Lagos is facing so much pressure, civil servants in Abuja working in offices where there's no other sources of income except salary go to work 2 times a week because of high fuel price and transportation

Point of correction. Over 80% of the population spending 90% of their income on food, shelter and basic necessities.
