Nigerian Ex-Petroleum Minister Diezani Appears In London Court Over Alleged £100,000 Bribery Charges

Former Nigerian petroleum minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, appeared before the Southwark Crown Court in London on Monday for the preliminary hearing of her bribery case.

The court appearance was part of early proceedings ahead of her full trial relating to allegations connected to her time in office.

Alison-Madueke served as Minister of Petroleum Resources from 2010 to 2015 and was the first woman to hold the position, as well as the first female president of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

The case was listed on the cause list for Court 8 before Justice Thornton.

The preliminary hearing took place ahead of the substantive trial, which is scheduled to commence on January 26, 2026.

Preliminary proceedings, including technical matters and jury selection, began this week, with Alison-Madueke in attendance.

The 65-year-old has been on bail since she was first arrested in London in October 2015. She has denied six charges against her.

She was formally charged in 2023 by the UK’s National Crime Agency with offences of accepting bribes between 2011 to 2015.

We suspect Diezani Alison-Madueke abused her power in Nigeria and accepted financial rewards for awarding multi-million-pound contracts,” the NCA said at the time.

According to the indictment, Alison-Madueke benefitted from at least £100,000 ($134,000) in cash, chauffeur-driven cars, flights on private jets, and the use of multiple London properties.

The charges also detailed financial rewards including furniture, renovation work, and staff for the properties, payment of private school fees, and gifts from top designer shops such as Louis Vuitton.

The trial is expected to last between 10 and 12 weeks.

Two other individuals are also being prosecuted in connection with the case: Doye Agama, who appeared in court via video link on Monday, and Olatimbo Ayinde, who was present in the dock.

ALLEGATIONS OF VICTIMISATION OF SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS IN RIVERS STATE

There is growing tension and unrest in Rivers State secondary schools following reports that some Principals, Vice Principals, Head Teachers, and their Deputies are being punished for allegedly supporting former Governor Nyesom Wike.

According to reports, several Principals perceived to be loyal to Wike have been transferred to schools with poor and unconducive working conditions, while others have reportedly been removed from their administrative positions and redeployed to classroom teaching duties after serving for many years as Principals or Vice Principals.

A source within the Rivers State Universal Basic Education Board (RSUBEB) alleged that officials were instructed to use any available excuse to demote or redeploy school administrators believed to be loyal to Wike. This development has generated widespread concern within the education sector.

One teacher from a secondary school in Port Harcourt appealed to the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) to intervene and prevail on Governor Siminalayi Fubara to reverse the alleged directive. The teacher emphasized that not all affected administrators are political loyalists, stressing that many of them are career civil servants who have faithfully carried out their duties without violating any civil service rules.

Further investigations revealed that the Board allegedly relied on questionable grade-level justifications to demote some school heads. A source at the Board described the action as improper and contrary to civil service procedures, noting that it is wrong to remove a duly appointed school head or vice principal who has not been found guilty of any misconduct or breach of civil service regulations.

The source further questioned the rationale of asking a school administrator to vacate office and return to classroom teaching solely on the grounds that there are teachers senior in rank within the same school, despite the individual having been formally appointed to the position.

In view of these developments, stakeholders are calling on Governor Siminalayi Fubara to urgently look into the matter. Reports indicate that several affected administrators have refused to vacate their offices or hand over, insisting that due process must be followed.

I like this woman that year.

I know she embezzled funds, but I believe she has turned a new leaf.

After this prosecution, she should join APC to have her sins forgiven. She should contest for one top position, and she'll win.

I'll be happy if she bounces back from this case.

I wish her all the best.

EVEN IN OVERSEAS MRS DEZIANI DO NOT HAVE PEACE OF MIND.

One would have expected that given her sojourn overseas she will have settled mind.

I blame Jonathan for this woman 's fate.

President Jonathan did not hold tightly to the presidency.

He just allowed it to slipped through his hands given opportunity to people who do not wish Nigeria a better future to seize power.

In the past, I thought as you do, but I learned over time that while male criminals steal enough to last their lifetime, women will steal enough to last the next ten generations of their extended family, if given the chance.

Men plan ahead for a few years, while women plan ahead hundreds of years, well past their expected lifespan. A woman's greed is infinite.

As your wealth of experience grows along this road of life, you will recall these words I wrote today, and you will see the truth in them.
