Every Year, the same news! It seems people just run for office with the intention to replicate their predecessors mistakes or footprints. |

non performing Minister trying to stay relevant While HND graduates should not face discrimination because they are very sound technically, this Minister should take a clue from Olubunmi-Ojo the interior minister and reform the education sector… focus on improving research, increased manpower, funding & grants to tertiary institutions e.t.c |

At this point, it is clear that the leaders don't know the meaning of education. If you remove the distinction between a degree and an HND, you then will need to develop another institution that caters to the needed technical skills. And then, those people will face the dichotomy again. There is nowhere in the world where a technical diploma is equated to a degree or "academic diploma" (as in Germany Austria, Finland, etc.) The technical diploma was meant to complement the academic diploma (degree). There is a very important distinction in these two systems: the course credit system. The course credit system for academic diplomas is based mainly on class (course) hours. While the credit for the diploma is based mainly on lab (practical) hours. That is why everywhere in the world, degrees do 90% class and 10% practicals (to appreciate the theory), while technical diplomas do 90% practicals and 10% class work (to conceptualize the practicals). Although due to the twisted nature of the Nigerian educational system, you will see polytechnic students doing 60% classwork, 20% practicals, and 20% argument on how they are better than university graduates. ![]() That is why the mechanical engineering polytechnic student is busy running around, looking for how to solve strength of materials equations, to prove that he knows "the theory," when he is supposed to be learning turning operations on the lathe machine. While the mechanical engineering student is running around, looking for how he can learn turning operations on the lathe machine so that he can prove that he knows "the practicals," when he is supposed to be solving strength of materials equations. Then the graduate engineer runs around, looking for jobs that should be for the technologists, and the graduate technologists run around looking for jobs that should be for the graduate engineer. The employer now sees that the engineering graduate is not qualified to be a technologist because he is not practical enough, and the technologist graduate is not qualified to be an engineer because he is not theoretically grounded enough. Both of them lose the jobs and become unemployable. Then they blame the government. Truly a twisted system. ![]() |

This is long overdue! It's one of the reasons many qualified candidates waste productive years at home waiting for admissions because polytechnic graduates are seen as second class citizens and nobody wants to be seen and addressed as one. |

eyesoflagos:A nation that does not seem to know where it's heading to. If you want to remove the dichotomy, then give to the polytechnics what the universities have. Upgrade their facilities, equipment, environment, enhance the criteria for admitting students, recruiting lecturers, etc. If the facilities and criteria are not the same, the two institutions cannot be the same. |

OracleJay411:Afraid of turning the system upside down and making a mess of our academic system. But I guess you never learned what a system is in your polytechnic. |

Technical Diplomas are not the same with University degrees. In the US, there are polytechnics and there are Universities.. They have not scrapped them. California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly): Known for hands-on learning, with campuses in San Luis Obispo and Pomona. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI): A leading private research institute in technology and engineering. Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI): Famous for project-based learning in science and engineering. Oregon Institute of Technology (Oregon Tech): Designated as Oregon's polytechnic. SUNY Polytechnic Institute: Focuses on technology and applied research. |

![]() BSC or HND Many employers prefer graduates from Polytechnics for employment, especially graduates from engineering in Polytechnics are great in practical fields |

This dichotomy that they've been trying to scrap for years now, the thing don dey be like Lagos - Ibadan express road wey no dey ever finish Even if they scrap whatever, will they force employers to still employ them? Employers that have that discrimination will still discriminate once they see the name of the higher institution na |
