You did the right thing,I sell Bean for a living but if I encounter this kind of kerosene smelling Bean after cooking I will thrash it as well I'm just confused how it wasn't smelling until after cooking, sounds confusing because Beans that have nasty smell can be easily detected at the point of purchase. |

Actually she didn't do the right thing as should be,by not confronting that evil but only returning the beans is not enough.....she was smart enough to detect the smell, what about people like me that don't perceived smell? She ought to have informed the woman straight up that her beans is bad and that kerosene was used to preserves it and as such she should remove it from the market. By doing this shee would have succeeded in saving lives. Sorry, it's my opinion though. Obiedun: |

That's how I bought Milo and peak satchet from a Mallam at abule egba late one night. Had nothing to eat at home and it was very late , just arrived Lagos from abuja ...omo the satchet Milo looked weird and tasted weird ,the peak looked like garri. I just threw it all away. I've stopped indomie and tin and satchet tomatoe paste long time ago. Evil people are killing Nigerians for profit |

DeclanR:Bros, the kerosene taste is as a result of preservation chemical, the beans is probably a newly harvested crop of which the preservation chemical is yet to wear off. |
| Re: Update On The Kerosene-like Smelling Beans by OlujobaSamuel: 11:01am On Jan 22 |
Op, what you perceived is the kerosene mixed with sniper for preservation. There is currently a surge of fresh beans in the market, probably because they dealers have exhausted their stock of dry beans. The fresh ones are usually preserved till they run out of stock of the previously preserved ones, by then, the chemical residue would have gone off and you won't notice it again. By August, we should be prepared for scarcity of beans, groundnut, corn and other grains |

DeclanR:Were you cooking it with stove? Did the seller notice similar smell from hers? Sometimes, it could be from where the beans were stored. Perhaps you or the seller stored Kerosene nearby |

Thanks for the update. What have you really done to prevent the sale of contaminated eans and protecting the health of others? You have returned the beans ... did not get a refund ...did not expose the seller was selling contaminated beans ... allowed her to most likely resell the beans you returned and double her money on the sale This is our problem ....why unscrupulous sellers continue to do what they do ....because we don't want to cause trouble. If we begin to expose these people and affect their business they'll start doing the right thing. |

jaephoenix:It's chemical for preservation that causes the kerosine-like smell. The smell comes either because the chemical has not expired or it is not the actual chemical meant for preservation. |

| Re: Update On The Kerosene-like Smelling Beans by luckingto50: 11:45am On Jan 22 |
The first question, are you using firewood and kerosene to make fire? The reason for the question is that when you light up the fire and you did not allow the smeĺl of the kerosene to quench before putting pot of water on the fire, by the time you finish cooking, the food will taste kerosene smell. |

They use kerosene and even sniper to preserve their beans. Sorry statw of affairs but its what it is. You can choose to: discard the beans, return the beans or boil the beans and pour the water away twice before eating. My recommendation is ro discard. quote author=DeclanR post=138221432]https://www.nairaland.com/8603607/beans-smelling-like-theres-kerosene Further to the above link, I decided against eating same beans yesterday. I was in a rush trying to make that post yesterday, as a result, some details were left out. — I bought two Mudus of Milk Beans. I had earlier bought two Mudus of Honey beans, but when I got home to cook the honey beans, I noticed it had no taste at all. The Beans is so Neat and clean, but no taste. — As a result of its lack of taste, I decided to buy the milk beans. Believe me I hadn't heard of these names(Honey and milk beans) until Monday last week. — While I was picking and winnowing the Milk Beans yesterday, there was no smell. But as soon as I began to cook it, the smell began to erupt. I washed it with cold water four times before parboiling. After Parboiling, i still washed it like five times, still the smell didn't go away.. — I ran to a male neighbour of mine and ask him if he had had such experience with beans, he said no. He advised I threw them away. I ran to an old woman within the neighbourhood, she said I could eat it. She even tested it. But I said I won't eat. I threw the parboiled ones away. I returned the remaining ones to the woman who sold to me. She didn't give me back my money and I didn't want to start dragging with her. Though she promised to do so later. Please do not care less about your Health. Prevention is better than Cure. A lot of food items have been adulterated in today's market. Everybody wants to make quick quick money at the expense of the other. Eating banana and plantain now is also risky, even Fufu(Akpu), Palm oil. The situation is really bad.[/quote] |

DeclanR:let me tell you the Truth ehn! your beans was bringing out kokoro (tiny insects) and it was sprayed with sniper mixed with kerosene to kill the insects and to stop them from damaging a whole bag of beans.... i would advice to always parboil beans before cooking |

This reason for this from my own opinion is the people that stocking the product thinking the price will go up, now discover that the price is falling and can still fall more, but, not to run at too much loss decided to bring the goods out of stock. |

Tin tomato is also the same with sachet tomato, right? I thought this is the best way to preserve tomato because it does not last long. That is why its mostly preserve in paste form(tin tomato). 360who: |

Red Palm oil is the worst. the way this oil is being adulterated is mind blowing. Honey self is no more. all sellers now adultrate their honey and I am tired of buying from anyone even if he shows me his bees hive. Now i want to harvest directly or see you harvest and watch u pour it inside ur container then i buy. Nigerians are getting difficult |

Globad:I avoid fruits as much as possible these days. I only buy pineapple and cherry from a particular woman in my area. I have stopped buying oranges. Orange peels that used to give one teary eyes while peeling it doesn't do so anymore. Even onions nor dey causes tears again. Omo, we are in trouble o. |
