Sir Shina Peters Reacts To Pastor Ashimolowo’s Wealth Sermon by phosky(op): 7:43am On Jan 22
Legendary Nigerian juju musician Sir Shina Peters has responded to comments credited to Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo, founder of Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC), following a sermon in which the cleric reportedly compared the singer’s financial decisions with those of Zenith Bank founder, Jim Ovia. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

The remarks were made during a sermon on wealth, timing, and delayed gratification, delivered by Ashimolowo at a recent service held at the Commonwealth of Zion Assembly (COZA). In the viral clip, the preacher allegedly cited an illustration involving two Nigerians who had ₦20 million in 1990—claiming that while one invested the money in building a house, the other used it to establish a bank, mentioning Sir Shina Peters and Jim Ovia respectively.

Reacting to the clip via his Instagram Story on Wednesday, Sir Shina Peters dismissed the claims attributed to Pastor Ashimolowo, describing them as false, misleading, and derogatory.

The music icon expressed appreciation to Daddy Showkey for bringing the video to his attention but made it clear that he would not pursue legal action over the matter.

Sir Shina Peters, who is now also a Christian pastor, explained that his decision not to escalate the issue was guided by his faith and commitment to the unity of the body of Christ.

He further stated that God has remained faithful to him throughout his career and life, adding that he holds no bitterness or resentment towards Pastor Ashimolowo. According to him, the most important thing is how individuals use their blessings to positively influence others, rather than making public comparisons that could be misunderstood.

The development has since generated conversations online, with Nigerians expressing varied opinions on the sermon, wealth narratives, and the public comparison of prominent figures.

No need comparing individuals.
Everyone has a priority needs , and most important thing is fulfillment in whatever you do . SSP is a musician and not a business man. Jim had his mind on business and worked towards actualizing it.
Both are fulfilled and successful in their different endeavors. Pastors and motivational speakers should take caution in what they analyze.

There's no way Sir Shina Peters would've made 20 million naira in 1990. For those who are not aware, 20 million naira in 1990 was very very huge o! Even the likes of King Sunny Ade, Fela Kuti and Sikiru Ayinde Barrister who were far richer than Shina did not boast of such huge amount. I remember the highest currency in Nigeria that time was 20 naira. If you spray 5 naira notes in a party during that era, you are the biggest man in town.

If Sir Shina has invested his money into business what time would he had gotten for his music? Who would know him as juju star. Shina excelled as a musician. What is the Pastor point in the illustration. Not everyone will go into business. Some of these motivational talks need to be scrutinized.

A pastor can make his point on the pulpit, without making it obvious, the persons he is referring to.

Sometimes personal info shared with a pastor in confidence, is used as sermon topic. Even if that is done, the privacy of the individual should be respected.

Body of Christ that they've butchered already with greed, lies and falsehoods. I pity who dey believe pastor.

Everything you need is in your Bible, your pastor will only tell you his own interpretation which most times is influenced by his own biase and ulterior motive.

His audience should have reminded him that callings in life are different.

You don't use another man's calendar as a yardstick for yours.

That's the point, there could be people who even invested more but lost out.
I have come to accept the fact that not everyone who didn't make it or are downtrodden didn't try or make efforts, its just that their efforts didn't yield expected results. This is applicable to all fields even in academics too.

But this story has been on for a long time and he never debunked it.
All I know is that he built one magnificent edifice then, I think the story is that he saw the prototype in US and decided the duplicate it and I am sure he is the one that bragged to the tabloids that his house cost 20m.

A society that materialism is encouraged even in religious circle.
Ashimolowo is a businessman disguised as pastor. He shouldn't be using the pulpit to make unholy comparison.
Just one of Jesus's disciples was rich and he never compared any of them.

When lies are repeated endlessly, they eventually become accepted as truth. I've read this same story on numerous forums, and I'm glad he finally responded and debunked these allegations, even though he didn't provide any details to verify whether he was indeed financially well-off at that time to have injected such humongous amount into a private residential construction. I remember my dad's coffin we bought cost less than 300 naira in Jan 1990; it was a common model for a middle-class family. Back then, 20 million naira was a considerable sum.
