Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has dismissed speculations about a possible defection from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, saying he remains comfortable in the party despite recent political realignments.


Makinde made this known after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu, where he was asked about reports that some PDP governors and leaders had defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Responding to the question on whether he was considering a move to the APC, the governor said he had no such plans, stressing that his loyalty to the PDP remains intact.


“I’m comfortable in the PDP,” Makinde said.

“Again, we may have issues in this country where a bipartisan approach is required. It shouldn’t be a situation where only the APC is talking or only the PDP is talking. We must look at what puts our best foot forward in the interest of our nation.”


He added that when national interest is at stake, cooperation across party lines becomes necessary.

“At that point, you need everybody on board,” he noted.

The governor’s comments suggest a willingness to engage in bipartisan dialogue at the national level, while firmly maintaining his political base within the Peoples Democratic Party and rejecting any immediate move to the All Progressives Congress.

Tinubu is only trying to strike a deal again this time because he fears Makinde contesting will split his Southwest base. Heads or rail, Southwestern votes will still get split. You are not entirely correct. Tinubu got 5.6m votes in the North in 2023 and it was largely free and fair. Northerners kept their words and repaid him for supporting Buhari in 2015. If the elections were rigged, it was in the Southern states like Rivers. Noise is not strategy neither is it numbers. Obi needs an alliance if he's ever to become president, same as Atiku. But the North is where the numbers are and numbers do not lie.

In the North, yes. Can't say same for other regions. Elections don't get rigged in the North unless the people permit it. It's the fastest way to get counted for whosoever attempts to do so for an unpopular candidate.

Tinubu has probably struck a deal with Makinde to checkmate Wike. He will handover the PDP structure to him to prevent Wike from having a foothold. All the recent court judgments are already a pointer to this. The presidency is also now coming out strongly against Wike in the public. Wike will not go out without a fight.

You're probably right. It's called controlled opposition but as long as the candidate comes from the South, it will only weaken APC.

Atiku son who supposed to carry the election matter is observing table manner but a Nairaland warrior is here spewing whatever will make him have partial relief about the imminent defeat that await his party.

I think their problem is the north. It’s more difficult to rig elections there.

They know PDP is dead in the SE, parts of SS, Lagos and Abuja without Peter Obi, but if they field a Presidential candidate, the hope is they can hold on to the party structures at the local level in the North to hurt Atiku, which I think they’ll still fail at because people know who to vote for at the local and who to vote for at the federal level
