A Nigerian woman has sparked massive reactions online after surprising her 9-year-old daughter with an iPhone 17 as a reward for finishing second position in her class.

The heartwarming moment was captured in a viral TikTok video shared by @divinetouchmga, showing the young girl excitedly unboxing the premium smartphone. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

In the clip, the child can be seen carefully opening the iPhone 17 box, visibly overwhelmed with joy as she realizes the gift inside. Her priceless reaction has since melted hearts and triggered widespread debate across social media.

The video was captioned:

“Our client bought her 9-year-old an iPhone 17 for coming second in class. Our client shocked us today. More Odogwu clients to come.”

Notably, the iPhone 17 was officially unveiled by Apple on September 9, 2025, during its annual launch event in Cupertino, California.
The event also introduced the iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the newly designed iPhone Air.

The video has since drawn thousands of reactions, with many Nigerians expressing shock, admiration, and humour over the expensive reward.

Some notable reactions include:

@Austinzy wrote:

“Omo, I carried first throughout my primary school, na only shoe them dey buy 😂”

@Heis_Airme commented:

“Na so so bicycle my uncle dey promise me 😭 Audio bicycle 😂😂”

@Dot added:

“Come wetin I still dey do with academics 😭😭 and I still dey use Android — see person wey I senior 😭🙏🏽”

@Uforo Emmanuel joked:

“Person go get this kind phone finish dey use am play Subway Surfers or Candy Crush.”

@Dayo shared a different experience:

“I got gifts every year. As long as my result was good—1st or 2nd place—I got whatever I wanted.”

While many praised the mother for motivating academic excellence, others questioned whether gifting such an expensive device to a child so young was appropriate.

The video has since reignited conversations around parenting styles, reward systems, and children’s access to luxury gadgets in Nigeria.

I honestly suspect this woman doesn’t actually like her daughter, she just enjoys sabotaging her with premium gadgets. An iPhone 17 as a reward for coming second at age nine? Congratulations in advance on watching that academic performance dive straight to the Mariana Trench.

It’s not even about the cost, buy a spaceship if you like. But handing a distraction factory disguised as a phone to a primary school pupil and calling it motivation is peak parental self-deception. At that age, you’re supposed to reward discipline, not install TikTok, Snapchat, and digital amnesia in a child’s pocket.
Re: Woman Gifts 9-year-old Daughter Iphone 17 For Coming Second In Class by helinues:
If it reach your turn, buy your daughter doughnuts and soft drinks.

Wondering why some people only focus on the bad side of kids using gadgets without considering the positive impacts.

The way you raised your kids would determine how they behave with or without gadgets

Modified: Why do some Nigerians like to help others calculate their spendings? I believe they also don't expect others to tell them how to spend their money

Oh, absolutely, nothing screams child development like handing a nine-year-old the latest iPhone 17.

Please, do enlighten us on the “positive impact.” Is it to help the child master advanced skills like doom-scrolling before breakfast, arguing with strangers online by lunch, and developing wrist pain from nonstop gaming by dinner? Or perhaps it’s for early exposure to luxury addiction, so they learn, at age nine, that happiness comes in titanium frames and yearly upgrades.

And yes, I’m pretty sure even Elon Musk, who shoots cars into space for fun, wouldn’t casually dump a bleeding-edge smartphone into the hands of a nine-year-old and call it character building. If billionaires with access to Mars are still cautious, maybe the rest of us shouldn’t be using “positive impact” as a creative writing exercise.

But by all means, tell us more. The world is waiting to hear how an iPhone 17 is the new ABC book.

Do you consider placing restrictions on the iphone before handling it to the little 9 years old girl?

My first and the only Iphone was given to me by someone, unlocked, I could only play games on it back then. Most of the features are not available in Nigeria then. Iphone was still so young in Nigeria then.

Wetin do iPhone XR or iPhone 11 huh I’m pretty sure she won’t be able to stay on top of how that phone is being used, which just leaves the kid exposed to a lot of garbage. Even something as simple as trying to watch a football match can end up redirecting you to porn sites. Gen Z parents needs to do better. Even Ronaldo no do pass reach us.

So let me get this straight… all you ever did with an iPhone as a kid was play games, and somehow that makes handing one to a 9-year-old perfectly fine? Wow. Case closed, your honor, you’ve convinced absolutely no one.

Still, my stance stands, there’s nothing wrong with taking a moment to figure out how to genuinely reward the little girl for her hard work, without tossing her a shiny, expensive distraction that’s guaranteed to hijack her focus.

Your arguments is based on perception. When the internet, cyber cafe was new in Nigeria, I had free access because of a family friend was running 24/7 cyber. Then, going to cyber mean you are into yahoo but I wasn't restricted at all by dad. I remember I always do night browsing regularly.

Others are busy doing yahoo but I was busy learning about internet as at the early age. After a month, there must be so many invitation letters in our P.O box, scholarship, invitation letter, school brochure which dad was always proud about

Forget about what your kids have access to at early age, how you trained them would determine how to handle whatever they are exposed to.

If you are a Yoruba , there is one mutual saying from our mothers, Ranti Omo eni ti o n se' Remember the son of who you are.

If you are from good background, that line will always be repeated and be ringing in your head always.

So parents shouldn’t bother about what their kids get their tiny hands on at a tender age? Oh, really?So what's the essence parental guidance. Then what’s the point of all those sermons, workshops, and frantic WhatsApp messages about “monitoring your child’s screen time”?

Guy, you are spectacularly wrong, no scratch that, everything about letting a 9-year-old loose on an iPhone is wrong. Absolutely, fantastically wrong.

And that’s my final word on this.

Which parents? Are you the one who raised that particular girl? Did you how how she has been raised?

I didn't belong to ordinary kegites club during tertiary not to talk of cult group while friends who I harbored like 3-4 are in different cult group.

My background always reminded me of protecting my family's name . I was raised that way and had to live that way.

Don't assume what you have not experienced. How you raised your kids have major role in his/her exposure to life

Even if she insists on splurging on a gadget for her, why not get her a decent laptop loaded with games and fun educational materials? That way, she actually learns while playing. But an iPhone 17? Really? What magic spells is she planning to cast with that thing?”

1. Content. See the way it is enraging poor men’s children. Objective accomplished.

2. I support the act. Na where your money reach you go display. My old man got me watches when younger for doing the same. He later bought me a phone in final year of high school. I turned out all right after all. When my children drop, na vacations I go run. Make una fold arms look.

A woman is still a Child

That is why elders frown on single mothers

A single mother is a child that is raising another child
Women act and think like children

Allowing only a woman to raise a child
Is like allowing a child to raise a child.

That is why fathers are very important
Women are children
They act and behave like children

A child cannot raise a fellow child
That is why products of singlle mothers always end up as OS or baddies due to extreme poor parenting from the woman.

You will see a woman fix nails and eye lashes and wig for a 3 year old girl cry cry cry

Like seriously a 3 year old angry angry angry

Never allow a woman to only raise ur kid
A father figure is extremely important
Because a child cannot train a child
