The Igbo Muslim narrative has been on social media for some time now, and most times I laugh. I laugh as an Igbo man. Now, I have decided to write this as an Igbo man. I don’t have a problem with Muslims. I have many fantastic Muslim friends, and I have also seen terrible ones too—just like Christianity. I have seen terrible ones and great ones. I have always treated people on an individual basis, not lumping people together. But there is one trend that is going on, especially among Muslims who were born and raised in Igbo land, especially those from the Middle Belt. They have been used to push the narrative of Igbo Muslims. You go to social media, especially X (formerly Twitter), and you see them parroting “Muslim Igbo,” etc. They always say that Igbo must convert. This is the exact issue the Muslim population is having in the West today—from England to New Zealand, from Poland to Japan, from Brazil to Germany. China even sees Islam from a different perspective. What is the problem? Imposition and inability to respect the host and cohabit peacefully. I am middle aged and I am yet to see an Igbo Muslim. I mean a pure-bred Igbo Muslim. Maybe there might be those whose mothers were impregnated by some folks from the North—you know blood is always thicker, and you don’t play with genes—but I am yet to see an Igbo Muslim. In fact, it is so funny that in my village or in Anambra, you rarely see a mosque. I started hearing calls for prayers in the morning, blasting from loudspeakers, when I came to Lagos after university. In the East, it is just non-existent. I know that we Igbo have brothers in the Middle Belt and we respect the host, but we also want the visitor to understand that we Igbo have a unique culture. One thing the Islamic religion does to a society is that it first deletes their identity, just like we have seen in the North. You rarely see a Hausa man bearing pure Hausa names. You see people bearing names like Mohammed Musa, Isa Ibrahim, Aisha Mohammed, etc. These aren’t African names but pure Arabic names. Then, when they are done, they erase the culture. That’s why we have Emirs in the North. Emir is an Arabic ruler and title. Unlike the Igbo, who still have Eze, Igwe, Obi, or Okpala Ukwu, they don’t have this luxury in the North. They don’t even have traditional weddings; they do Islamic weddings. Unlike in Igbo land, where we still have igba nkwu and ime ego nwanyi. We still have the breaking of kola nut and the New Yam Festival. We still relish the Ofala Festival and masquerades. We still do our traditional burials even after church burials. We still hold and love our customs. We still give our children Igbo names and even modernise Igbo names like Kamsi, Simdi, Amanda, etc.—modern Igbo names. A luxury the North can’t afford. Now, when they say Igbo must convert, I laugh. Why do I laugh? The Igbo were able to become Christians—not that they are fully Christians; they balance Christianity and tradition. They still break kola nuts. When push comes to shove, they might go and ask questions in certain traditional places and still believe in ancestors, especially ndi ichie. One thing that made the Igbo become Christians was not because of white man importation. No. It is because of the value the religion brought to them. The religion brought education, development, modernisation, and balance—not a frigid or rigid life. Will Islam offer this? I doubt it, because the average Igbo has seen the lifestyle in the North—the situations, the conditions, the erosion of traditions, how women are treated, and how kids are sent to the streets. Will the Igbo, with their republican nature, allow that? I doubt it, as an Igbo man. Another thing is that the average Igbo “no send you.” Let me break it down. When the Anglican Church, which was brought to us by colonials (just as Islam was brought to the North by strangers), started debating whether to allow women to be priests and officiate, and whether to allow gays to be wed and be priests due to woke culture, the international Anglican Communion agreed to it. Automatically, the Igbo Anglican Church, numbering millions, was expected to fall in line. But guess what? The Igbo Anglican Church walked out internationally and created their own union, citing that it goes against their culture and tradition. An average Igbo man is first an Igbo before being Catholic or Anglican. They are conscious that these are imported religions. But unlike Islam, people in the North are first Muslim before their tribes. That’s why they have so much belief in an Emir sighting the moon. An average Igbo man would not want a particular person to sight the moon for him. He would tell you, first, that he also has eyes to sight the moon, and second, that he isn’t stupid enough to allow someone to sight moons for him year in and year out. So the Muslim community is lucky without the Igbo because if the Igbo were Muslim, trust me, someone would be sighting the moon while another would be questioning how the moon is sighted. The Igbo are republican by nature, and Islam thrives in a monarchical or theological setup, which is not in Igbo culture or interest. The Muslim will demand a good would be cooked in certain way and will be in a halal way and trust the Igbo man! The Igbo would be like, why are you expecting so much, go and eat what everyone eat! If you want something special, you pay special and when this is done ,many would see it as segregation, intimidation or unwanted expectations! Also, the issue of entitlement mentality among some of our brothers from North would not work in Igbo land. The Igbo believe you have to work hard, not sit down and be given something, like what we see in the North, where one man is rich while the rest of society comes to his house to collect stipends. Also, recently they were saying the Muslim community is demanding a Deputy Governor slot. That’s entitlement. You don’t demand it—you contest for it. You don’t demand land for cattle rearing; you buy or lease it. These are things the Igbo wouldn’t take. The Igbo woman might find it hard to understand that her husband can marry three extra wives and have mistresses outside, and she wouldn’t cough. If she talks, she could be divorced by mere words—“I divorce you” three times—as required in Islamic tradition. A lot of factors make the average Igbo unlikely to convert to that religion. This is the reality on ground. So when they peddle the narrative of Igbo Muslims and mass conversion, some of us who are pure Igbo breed laugh at their folly for not understanding the Igbo mindset. It is like saying you want to convert the Chinese, Japanese, or Polish people to Islam. These are traditional societies. Religious cohesion and tolerance are important in Nigeria because the country is made up of people from different religious backgrounds. Respecting one another’s beliefs helps to promote peace and reduce conflict. It also encourages unity, allowing citizens to work together for national development. When people are tolerant, they see each other as fellow Nigerians rather than as members of different religions. This strengthens stability, fairness, and harmony in the country... We do t need imposition but tolerate Finally, the Islamic religion should stop the idea of having a mission to dominate the world. It is ridiculous and funny, and it makes people detest the religion. God has always given us choices, and choices make the world colourful. We all can’t face one direction—it would be boring and lack innovation. So the issue of Muslim Igbo or Igbo Muslim should not even be talked about. https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1C97ezzSvz/ |

Igboland should take concrete/proactive steps to stem the tide of shariaism and almajirism from encroaching into the east. When I say concrete steps, I mean decisive, ruthless and indignant steps/actions to ward off such INFERIOR cultural infestations... INFERIOR? Yes! Shariah is INFERIOR to The Igbo culture! How? I will explain. Shariah as we have seen it practiced in several places around Africa and Asia, can not be said to be some kind of cultural improvements to what we have as our way of lives in igboland at the present! So why should we allow such to trend in igboland? I mean, you want us to allow the spread of wayward Islam in the east so that women and men will not sit in the same car or keke in igboland? So kids will leave formal schools and be wasting away in all sorts of squalid camps as almajiris? So that we have to wait for one overdressed clown parading around as an Emir/Sultan to tell us when to cough and when to fart!?!?!? The only area the Shariarists are doing better than us is in the area of suicide bombing! Sorry... Even before the advent of Christianity into igboland, the hitherto default cultural setting in the east, suits the drives and egalitarian pursuits of a typical igbo. We have always respected our women and never tucked them away in some rooms like house pets! We have always prayed and have always been a clean people. So what do we need this atavistic sharia for ![]() Taking measures to curtail the spread of Islam in igboland as our forbearers did, might be the biggest gift we can give to our kids.. This is not even a religious war. It is a struggle for the core of our basic existence. Period! Thank You All For Your Attention To This Message! |

It's likely for an extreme rejection of Islam to develop among the Christians Igbo, which may result to unjustified killings of the Igbo Muslim reverts, or otherwise a terror group may be created to kill any Igbo Muslim reverts from the way thins are going due to very extreme islamaphobic nature of this people... . But let's give this some years. |

Islam can never take hold in Igbo land because it was founded on terror and spread with the sword. Non adherents were put to the sword in it's early days. Unless jihad happens which is impossible, there's absolutely nothing anyone can do to propagate Islam in the Igbo territory |

P1PrinceKT:Your forbearers tried in the past to visit igboland with Islam, but couldn't succeed. You think it is a coincidence that Kogi and Benue are full of indigenous Muslims but Anambra and Ebony have nothing significant?? Even with then outcome of the Biafra vs Nigeria war, you made zero inroads. It has nothing to do with simple phobia as such. It has everything to do with the jarring contrast in practice between shariah and the core beliefs of the igbo culture. Catholicism/Christianity easily caught fire in igboland because of how Christians teachings allinged with the already established behavioural patterns in igboland. That's how we ended up Christians. "Thou shall not kill". "Thou shall not fornicate". "Thou shall not steal". "Thou shall be your brothers keeper". These are the same with "igbo omenalas"... These laws are the same with entrenched cultural norms of the igbo, so the missionaries were not saying anything new when.they showed up with the bibles. They were rather preaching to the choir. Our progenitors made a wise choice by voting for Christianity. We will stick with that till the end of time.. Thank You For Your Attention To This Message! |

He would find it funny that their daughters aren't valued in marriage and can be divorced simply by saying I deserve thee three times .. he would find it extremely funny that he would be praying in one funny language called Arabic and the god can't even hear Igbo or communicate in Igbo and he wound have to decline time to learn Arabic time that he would use to do business ! He would always find it a bit devastating and detestable that their women are mandated to dress in some funny masquerade wear ..Igbo land that their women are liberated He would also find it funny that he can't even break the kola cos they are following one arabica man called Mohamed Islam is a funny concept and the Igbo find it a bit ridiculous!
