This is funny and strange, you are the business owner ( Disco) and collecting money for the service you provided, how is it now the business of your customers to provide measuring apparatus to quantify what your customers consume.

For example, do motorists come along with meter whenever they want to buy fuel from the filling stations?,
It's bizarre that costumers are the one to pay for meters or installations.

Imagine I'm the one to buy clipper for my barber or tools for my mechanic

We need Wilke in the ministry of power. At least for four years.
Honestly, the discos will comply.

As he saying goes, a chain is as strong as it's weakest link. Therefore, a ministry is as strong/weak as the efficiency of it's minister!

The ministry of works, interior and fact are perfect examples of my analogy.

These people aren't just serious at all. Even if the world bank has not sponsored the delivery of this meters, it is the tool with which the discourse build their customers so it should be their headache how meters get to the consumers.

The free meter is yafunyafun in my area band B everywhere free meter but 20k is the cost for registration. They are even giving people 3phase easily.

And I know the installers will collect some amount too. Maybe around 10-15k

It's still fair instead of paying 180k for MAP

MAP is very easy to get once you get your cash at hand within weeks you get your meter.

The only thing people are forgetting is that this free meter is for band A and B forget what minister is saying oo, the reality here is different.
Band C that I know are getting meters under MAP, some people too that can't wait for the free meter and are under band A and B are getting their meters under MAP once you have your almost 200k.o

And the distribution company won't want band C and below people to have meters easily for obvious reasons

I like what Adelabu has done so far. Lol.

Discos are were.ys and have no sympathy like most Nigerian business people. Everything is an opportunity to make quick money.

They have been provided meters they will repay back in the next 10 years and they want to quickly take the money from consumers now. So, the institution that provided such opportunity considered them or the consumers to do such?

They MUST provide the meters free, and they bill repayment of the meters gradually over 10 years. This 10-years payment provided isn't for them. If the meter costs N200k, they must divide the money over 9.5 years repayment so that consumers pay N1.9 per month for the next 10 years. And they apply inflation to the cost. At most, consumers pay N5 per month for the meter, and they will repay everything back in 9.5 years. But the Discos want to collect the cash immediately from consumers. Why then, does the installment payment exist? For them or for the customers?

As regards the cost of installation, it should be around N500 per meter. If the meters are installed in bulk, like 1 person installs 20 meters per day and they move like 50 installers to a location, it means that per day, they can move 1,000 meters per day. Logistics cost is the same and they pay per day. So that logistics is the cost of fuel (they must have vehicle na...or don't they have?). And then, each installer collects N10k per day. It's enough. That's about N500,000 installation fee and max of another N50k which will be N550k for every 1,000 meters installed. This will be N550 per household. So. They shouldn't collect more than N550 per meter na. Let's say they are greedy and they want to cash out seriously for like N1m for logistics (I don't know how moving 1 000 meters for N1m is justified, but let say that's the price...then. the final cost is around N1,500 per meter. Or let's say, they want to knock some millions even billions, N2,000 per meter is enough. But these people are knocking out like N5b for each directors they have and they may have like 15 directors. Just imagine how much they are making. Plus, they get to keep the meter cost in a secured investment that will give directors like N10 billion each per year for the next 10 years na. Very greedy people. (The calculation is just to show you how it works and not the real figures).

But they want to collect around N250k per meter. And they put the money in an investment vehicle for good 10 years before they repay the suppliers. And also overcharge for installations.

This is the kind of corruption we need to address in Nigeria. It is killing the nation, and people aren't ready to stop until they finally destroy everything.
Shamefully, many Nigerians are like this.

These disco dancers will not stop to amaze me. Everybody knows that installation cost would be paid for by customers.

The minister was talking about the cost of prepaid meter itself, we are not supposed to pay for prepaid meters since it's a private sector driven industry.

It's just like MTN asking Nigerians to pay for telecommunication mast before we can have network on our devices.

The government should pay the appropriate people in order for the citizens not to have to pay for it anymore. Otherwise it will just be like those secondary school bullies who tell jambites to go and buy snacks for them with their (jambites) own money and even bring change for them!
Discos were suppose to make meter available to every LD as its aslo a component of distribution, but i dont know how this people have managed to corner FG even to provide or replace damaged DSS which is the main component of distribution they will as community to source fund then after the purchase you have to sign it off to them as their property . I dont even know what to call the practices we see in this country.

This shouldn't be a problem at all. In order to avoid any avenue for some cabals to start embezzling money from a subsidised installation fee with government intervention, let the users pay the installation fee. That will be far cheaper than the cost of getting a prepaid meter. Instead of paying 150k+ for getting a new prepaid meter, I would rather pay 10k or just 20k for the installation and get the meter for free. Also, as per the MAPs (Meter Asset Providers Scheme), which is to encourage users pay for meter and get a fund through energy credits over time, why not run the scheme alongside the free meter project and make it optional for users to choose whichever plan they want based on their location and the band they belong?

Some people may find it as a better option if they have the money to pay for the meter and get energy credits in return while some people can't afford to raise the money for the meter but can pay for installation and later purchase energy credits that they need.

The Minister of power has spoken, he has taken a very bold positive step to help solve the problem of the meter distribution in Nigeria, the Discos shouldn't make this whole issue complicated for the masses. I am suspecting that this rejection is an attempt to give some people access to free money through the idea of installation subsidy which will still cause a lot of problem for the country.

I go lie for you?

They are big thieves
They need to be dealt with
The meters are entirely free

In some places the customers that were trying to resist installation, before they could enter their house wear better cloth and come out to say jack Robinson dem don install the meter sharp

Even one kobo no comot from their hands , the only thing they got was a big smile, congratulations, 50 or 100 units for a start.

What's the difference between single phase meter and 3 phase meter pls?

And are there any other types of meter apart from those two you mentioned?
Antoeni:
They always budget billions for free meters yet the people still pay for it.

Single phase meter is around N137,000 and 3-phase is N228,000. Prices are on the websites of the distribution companies.

Until the power sector is fully liberalized, all these "drip feeding" will not have any impact. It is safe to assume that the bulk of these funds will be looted under whatever guise
Re: DisCos Reject FG’s Free Meter Plan by loganx: 12:06pm On Jan 26
A country’s transition from "impoverished" or "developing" to "developed" is often measured by a single, critical benchmark: a steady, uninterrupted power supply. On a global scale, electricity is not just a utility; it is arguably the most vital and profitable sector in existence.

Nigeria, however, remains burdened by systemic corruption, nowhere more evident than in its power sector. Citizens are routinely charged for services they never receive. At the forefront of this exploitation are the Distribution Companies (DisCos), which continue to bypass the rollout of functional meters in favor of "estimated billing." This practice represents one of the most blatant forms of corruption in the country today, forcing Nigerians to pay for darkness rather than light.

OverCalculating:
Why do we buy mobile phones to make calls, then buy call credits on the phone to call? Why can't the network providers provide mobile phones to us for free because it is just a device to measure the units that we used on calls.

MTN, Airtel, Glo and the rest of them have their branded mobile phones with their SIM card on it by default, yet you still have to purchase the phone before you start using it to call. So, if the government is rooting for us to get it for free, it is not because they are running a charity organization, it is just a way to make it accessible by many people. If you can't pay for the meter in bulk, there is a way the service providers can pay on your behalf as long as you remain a loyal customer to them. Last last, they will deduct the cost from the energy credits that you purchase on a long term basis. So, they are not actually paying for you, it is just a WIN/WIN game.

I go lie for you?
Mobile phones are not just devices to measure the units you use on calls. They are actual communications devices. They belong to the users and they can decide to damage the phones if they like. This is unlike electricity meters. You are not supposed to tamper with them because they belong to the discos. As a matter of fact, you could be prosecuted if you touch them.

What is the essence of phone (with active SIM card) if you don't make calls, receive calls, text, use data on social media? All these come with extra cost. Even if you don't recharge the SIM card in your mobile phone, the person that calls you from the other end is paying for the service and you are also benefiting from it. So, in more logical terms, can you clearly explain to me why you still think a mobile phone (with an active SIM card) is different from a meter?

I don't need to explain anything to you since you still believe they can be compared.

It's not that bizzare when you realize that 20% of consumers of electricity pay cost reflective tarrifs, the rest pay 'subsidised prices' and 40% of users, including 68% of metered consumers, don't pay for the power they use...and government owes them trillions of naira in subsides, (and we haven't even talked about what the government owes them in unpaid bills).

That means not enough profit to do things like installing meters.

All true, but then 20% of consumers pay what can be described as a cost reflective tarrif. 80% DON'T.
Of all metered consumers , 60% bypass the meter and enjoy power for free. Overall 40% of consumers don't pay at all
Of those who do pay, the majority pay subsidised rates for power (or underpay). Government meanwhile is struggling to pay for subsides for power (currently owe 4 trillion naira).
As a result, estimated billing and overcharging are in place, yes exploitative, because if they don't do that, the discos won;t make enough money to barely survive.
Also, profits are too low, that discos have to reject electricity from gencos largely because they can't pay for it. Low profits means they can't pay for poles, transformers, wires, and yes, meters.

Firstly, I will replace "power sector" with "discos" because they are the major problem in that sector.

Secondly, the difference between MTN and the Discos is consistency in quality of service. MTN offered that, right from inception and then the people didn't mind, they paid huge money to get sim cards then. But what can you say about the discos?

They offered and still offer shitty service right from when the sector was unbundled and then expect people to pay cost reflective tariffs (cost of darkness )instead of service reflective tariffs.

When transformers get blown up, it's the people who pay to get another one.

MTN enjoy what you typed up there because they invested in telecom infrastructure from inception and that has helped them to offer quality service back to back over the years.

How much money have these discos invested into infrastructure from inception? They just want to continue to take, take, and take from us without putting anything in the sector.
