Nnamdi Kanu: The Rights And Benefits Of Honorary US Citizenship by Af0nja2(op):
This morning, a post appeared on the frontpage of Nairaland, titled "US state, Georgia grants Nnamdi Kanu honorary citizenship"

(See https://www.nairaland.com/8605231/us-state-georgia-grants-nnamdi)

According to the post, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, has been granted honorary citizenship of Georgia, a state in the United States.

Kanu is currently serving a life prison sentence at the Sokoto Prison after he was convicted on terrorism charges filed against him by the Nigerian government.

Since this news came out, I have been reading diverse opinions concerning the fate of MNK, with many of his supporters and loyalists jubilating that he might soon be released.

A particular comment stated that "as a US citizen they can negotiate his release through prisoners exchange".

Continuing, he said "may be Nigeria will release him for hush puppy to be released or any other Nigerian serving US prison term"

Unfortunately for the poster, this is no correct!

U.S. honorary citizenship is a purely symbolic, lifetime honor bestowed by Act of Congress on foreign nationals of exceptional merit.

It conveys no legal rights, privileges, duties, or immigration benefits—such as a passport, the right to vote, or permission to live in the U.S.

Below are the key aspects of U.S. honorary citizenship

1. Symbolic Nature: It is a ceremonial recognition of outstanding contributions, not a legal status.

2. No Rights: Recipients cannot vote, run for office, or obtain a U.S. passport.

3. No Immigration Benefits: It does not grant the right to reside in the U.S. or provide any special immigration benefits for the recipient or their family.

4. No Obligations: It does not impose any U.S. duties, such as taxes or jury duty.

5. Distinction: Unlike regular naturalization, no oath of allegiance is required.

In summary, it is a high-level gesture of friendship and respect from the U.S. government that does not change the recipient's legal relationship with the United States.

If it means nothing. How many of your family member or village person has gotten it.
If it was given to the present Yoruba president. You would have been celebrating it as an achievement and acceptance of usa government to him.Why will a state in usa honour him with such as your country see him as terrorist at this time. How many terrorist in prison in thr countries have received such honour in the past.

🟦 Symbolic / Diplomatic Recognition
It signals support or recognition from a U.S. state-level institution for Kanu’s work or influence.
It’s used to honour individuals perceived as having made a significant impact or contribution — even if controversial.
Politics Nigeria
🤝 Symbolic Courtesy and Goodwill
The proclamation encourages others to extend “every courtesy” to Kanu if he travels, as a goodwill ambassador.
Politics Nigeria
It’s mainly a gesture of respect or endorsement meant to raise his international profile.
🚫 What It Does Not Do
Contrary to some public speculation, honorary citizenship does not grant actual legal U.S. citizenship or rights, such as:
the right to vote
a U.S. passport
permanent residency or immigration privileges
legal protections under U.S. immigration law
the right to live or work in the United States
Nairaland
These are typical clarifications for honorary citizenship honors — at the federal or state level, they’re ceremonial and do not change someone’s immigration status.
Nairaland
🧠 What It Might Help with (Indirectly)
Even though it carries no formal legal benefits, there are some potential indirect effects:
✅ Raises international attention to his situation — which supporters may use in advocacy or diplomatic discussions.
✅ Signals political or moral support from a U.S. institution to allies, media, or advocacy groups.
✅ Boosts his public profile, which can influence conversations among diaspora communities, civil rights advocates, or foreign commentators.
ABN TV
📌 Bottom Line
Honorary citizenship is symbolic, not legal.
It doesn’t change his status before U.S. immigration or give him practical rights in America.
It does act as a form of political and diplomatic recognition that may have soft power or advocacy implications.

The internet wouldn’t have had any rest if Bola Tinubu was the recipient of this honor. Agbadorian keyboard warriors would’ve created 50 articles by now telling us how this is a validation of his “renewed hope” agenda.

Because it’s NK, they have gone into “play it down” mode.

It was reported as the US state of Georgia, not the US itself. Regardless, it was totally fake as there is nothing in US websites or reputable Nigerian ones.

Also, secretary of state of a state cannot give anyone anything, that's the Governor's job.

Once more IPOB lobbying gone wrong as the've lost money and all for nothing.

Re: Nnamdi Kanu: The Rights And Benefits Of Honorary US Citizenship by AndroBlaze: 9:45pm On Jan 24

Is this post really needed? Why can't people use their heads anymore?

So you mean, people that can "read and write" will hear that a mere "state" gave someone citizenship of a country and accept it?

Or can he be a citizen of just Georgia alone?Or does Georgia have it own passport that I am not aware of?

So now, if I want to become a citizen of UK I should go and beg the mayor of London to give me honorary citizenship? Why has he not done that for all of his Pakistani brothers already?

Which also mean Yorubas and Northners can make all their ethnic cousins in neighbouring countries Nigerians by getting their governors or even LG chairmen to offer them citizenship.

Just to make it clear (because we know where you people will go next), even Donald Trump cannot unilaterally make someone a citizen of his country, it is not within his power.

Kanu is already a citizen of the UK, and that already is one of the most powerful passports and citizenships in the world, no need to invent more fairytales....chai.

How do you call something fake because an honorary award was not uploaded in some website? That's why it's called honorary.
But I'm suspecting you didn't go through the 4 walls of a reputable institution to think people posing in that picture and whomever they represent, would risk legal action by writing the following below:

“In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the seal of my office, at the State Capitol, in the City of Atlanta, this 16th day of January, A.D. 2026.”

Education is not dead in Nigeria undecided it's just that when you align with APC or their RoNu alakuba e-bots your brain will enter hibernation mode cry

Take the case of aswani for example, he absolutely abhors Igbos but due to not wanting to sound as a bigot he hides his disgust in attacking 'obidients' (he feels all obidients are Igbos) because he knows it will be hard to pin his hate on an ethnic group instead of a political movement 🤗

I call aswani a Chameleon 🦎 for a very good reason 😏

I don't which Igbo man that has this contact that is jobbing other Igbos with it. Last year they gave it to the social media president. This year he has given to Kanu. Who knows next?

I didn't go through any walls of any institution but I know this:

1) Raffensperger is a Secretary of state and not the Governor of Georgia so can't award honorary citizenship.

2) The person in the picture handing over the Junk piece of paper isn't the aforementioned Raffensperger. The picture description didn't even mention their name.

3) The event wasn't held at the official state house as there are no pictures of official dignatories, it was held in some tacky restaurant, probably Nigerian.

4) The capital of Georgia is not Atlanta, might be Athens and I believe that's where both their legislature and government house are.

5) Such a thing would definitely have been on the Georgia government website, both text and pictures, and links will come from there, not from an Igbo history Facebook page.

You can delude yourself all you want, the news is fake and you people exciting yourself over it need need to think again.

You are partially right on one thing though, for this to be believed by some, Education is dead in some parts of Nigeria.

One of the banes of education in Nigeria is stereotypy and lack of exposure.

So because you read some write up, you feel you could just dish it out without carefully reading my submission.

I said the secretary of state can grant honorary award (which resembles citizenship, without legal status) to any person they feel is deserving of it, because it's an independent office QED

Even the governors do not have the rights to grant citizenship of any kind except the federal law makers

You should be arguing from the point of legal implications of attempted impersonation; can enlightened citizens or persons within the state of Georgia, risk legal action to forge the seal of the secretary of state?

Stop conflating, citizenship ó, award ó, secretary of state cannot give anybody.

Governor can honor people on behalf of the state, same as Mayor can give keys of their cities to person(s) as an honour.

I don't have to argue about attempted impersonation or forgery, I know this BS is exactly that, absolute BS.

This is BBC Igbo, not the BBC, big difference and different editorial standards. Also Ọga, allow shame catch you small bikonu.

Awards are nothing to do with the constitution, the latter determines how the state is governed by each of the arms of government. How do awards, or a non existent 419 one like this, fit into such.

It is a fake award noatter how youook at it.
