PAYE Cut Increases Workers’ Take-Home Pay In January — Oyedele by dre11(op): 4:16am On Jan 27
Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, has said that Nigerian workers were starting to enjoy higher take-home pay following a reduction in Pay As You Earn (PAYE) deductions under the country’s newly enacted tax laws.

Oyedele shared this in a post on X on Monday, citing feedback from employees who have already received their January 2026 salaries.

He noted that early reports indicated the new tax system was already easing the burden on workers, especially salary earners whose taxes are deducted directly at source.

The announcement comes as the federal government rolled out comprehensive tax reforms aimed at increasing disposable income, boosting economic growth, and simplifying tax administration nationwide.

Oyedele explained that the decline in PAYE deductions was an early sign of the impact of the recently introduced tax measures designed to lessen workers’ tax obligations.

“We are pleased to note the feedback from workers who have received their salaries for January 2026 and confirmed a reduction in their PAYE tax resulting in higher take-home pay under the new tax laws,” Oyedele stated.

He added that the reforms were particularly advantageous for employees whose income taxes are automatically deducted by their employers.

This is true.

Nigerians realized on twitter that those against the tax law were indeed spreading propaganda. January salary entered people’s accounts and salaries increased due to lower taxes.

Exactly what this tax guy said was going to happen. The new tax laws reduced taxes for like 90% of Nigerian workers.

Smh.

If you have work and pay PAYE, you will not type trash. This is how you give yourself away.

That you don’t know that this is a pragmatic way that government use to put money in workers' pockets shows that you are ignorant about this subject.

Ignorance and idleness lead to the worst form of poverty o. Wean yourself of both wink

When you earn a pay raise, increase your savings and investments. Don't increase your wardrobe and lifestyle f or number of sexual partners. It's poor people who do that.

How j wish the money would be spent wisely and not embezzled just like the subsidy removal
Re: PAYE Cut Increases Workers’ Take-Home Pay In January — Oyedele by bunmioguns(m): 6:23am On Jan 27
Typical government logic: Focus on PAYE reduction for the few formal workers while the 80% in the informal sector are being squeezed by 'double taxation' and 'agbero' levies. This January 2026 'testimony' sounds like a sponsored script. Let them show us the new tax tables and compare it with the 300% increase in the cost of living over the last year. The math isn't mathing!

Re: PAYE Cut Increases Workers’ Take-Home Pay In January — Oyedele by Reference(m): 6:40am On Jan 27
This man needs to talk less. Just making himself the lighting rod for public ire when the whole issue of taxation should be a national project and the more he wails alone the more he sounds like the salesman of a really bad product.

Oga Oyedele. Government finances belong to everyone. Democracy has given you the privilege of being the executioner of what we have all collectively decided.

You are making it look and sound like this is personal. Personal to you and to your bosses with an inordinate and overwhelming vested interest in what is to be collected.

PS. I understand Lagosians have approved their government seizing their resources via the new taxation protocols. That is going into their accounts and confiscating their assets and those related to them.
Is this true?

What is significant about 2k increment
Re: PAYE Cut Increases Workers’ Take-Home Pay In January — Oyedele by Luizkid(m): 6:43am On Jan 27
A very insignificant increment in Salary.. 2k difference precisely.
Re: PAYE Cut Increases Workers’ Take-Home Pay In January — Oyedele by 1vandragon: 6:47am On Jan 27
The increment ranged from N400 to N5,000.And not everyone got an increase. Some persons actually had reduced net salaries ranging between N700 to N2,500.

While it is OK that there were increases, how impacful or significant where those increases? If cost of living goes up by 700%, what is a savings of 2%-5% going to really do?

And to those trying to make it seem as if some Nigerians were against the revised income tax, that was not the reality. The argument was that it was not far reaching enough in view of the economic damage done by bat.

Why increase the base tax to 15% if you really want to help the poor? Why not leave it at 7%?

Given the economic realities, the exemption threshold should have started at around N2m and at 7%.

These are the real issues.

Stop lying. Tax did not increase, it decreased.

Also in the new tax law, all military officers pay zero taxes now.

But you paid more before. .eg. If you paid 7500 and it has now reduced to 4000 (depending on the % on your salary) So you go home with more salary.
That’s the point. Your tax reduced. Unlike the liars that said it would go from 7500 to like 10,000 and then your salary reduces.. Only the very rich who are like 5% of the population got higher taxes.

Theres also ‘rent relief’ available in the tax law. If your company’s HR didn’t add this to your tax refund, they should.
