Man Refuses Pregnant Woman Seat On Bus, Says “you Want Equality, You Can Stand” by alphonsoolajide(op): 8:42am On Jan 27
Today on the bus, I saw a woman who was clearly pregnant maybe 5-6 months along, she asked a guy for his seat because she looked really unwell and was holding her stomach. He replied “Well, you want equality, you can stand." She immediately threw up on him. And his phone. And the edge of his jacket. The pure shock and disgust on his face was honestly so satisfying 😭😭 (I gave her my seat btw)

A social media post detailing an encounter on a public bus has sparked intense debate online after a man allegedly refused to give up his seat for a pregnant woman, citing “equality,” only for events to take an unexpected turn moments later.

The incident was shared by a woman on X (formerly Twitter) and has since gone viral, drawing reactions around issues of courtesy, gender roles, empathy and public behaviour.
How the Incident Unfolded

According to the eyewitness account, the visibly pregnant woman, estimated to be about five to six months pregnant, appeared weak and uncomfortable while standing on the bus. Holding her stomach, she reportedly asked a male passenger to allow her take his seat. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

The man allegedly declined and replied, “Well, you want equality, you can stand.”

Moments after the exchange, the situation reportedly escalated when the pregnant woman suddenly vomited on the man, splashing his jacket, phone and seat area.

The eyewitness, who shared the story online, admitted that the man’s reaction was shocking, describing it as “unexpected but satisfying.” She added that she immediately gave up her own seat to assist the pregnant woman.

The post quickly ignited heated conversations online, with users split over who was in the wrong.

Some users questioned why the pregnant woman specifically approached a male passenger instead of a female.

One user, identified as Daune, wrote:

“I would have given her my seat, but why did she ask a man instead of another woman?”

Another user, Ankit, defended the man’s stance, arguing that pregnancy does not automatically entitle anyone to another person’s seat, especially when others could have intervened.

However, many users criticised the man’s response, describing it as insensitive and lacking basic human compassion.

Bernard wrote:

“Using ‘equality’ as an excuse to be rude to a pregnant woman is heartless. Chivalry isn’t about superiority; it’s about empathy.”

Another user, known as The Professor, described the incident as “instant karma,” adding that equality should never replace basic decency.

Several commenters praised the storyteller for stepping in to help, stressing that empathy should always come before ideology, especially in situations involving visible distress.

The incident continues to trend across social media platforms, with many Nigerians arguing that while equality is important, kindness and compassion should not be negotiable, particularly in public spaces.

As of the time of this report, no video evidence of the incident has surfaced, and the identities of those involved remain unknown.

A pregnant woman is like a sick person, this should have nothing to do with equality or any nonsense....if a man is unwell,a woman should give him her seat...so that man is just being insensitive and senseless

When you need help don’t make it seem like it’s your right, anyone would’ve given up the seat if she wasn’t appearing entitled…as a pregnant woman, don’t ask anyone to stand up for you to sit, a lot of people are sensitive, they know when you need help… but asking a seat immediately because you are pregnant, it’s rude

IMO, this never happened.

I would not give up my seat regardless.

What happened to waiting for the next ride?
Even if there was a queue, preferences are usually made to children, elders and pregnant women in most cases. So why will you hop on a bus with no seats and expect me to stand for you.

You ll live with your decisions abeg

On a second thought, this seems to be a fake story.
Why did the writer not first offer her seat on seeing the woman?

Story sounds fake. Being told for clout more or less.

No man in a Euro-American, even Asian setting, would do the above.

Also, there are seats reserved for the disabled and pregnant on some public transport busses oversea

Re: Man Refuses Pregnant Woman Seat On Bus, Says “you Want Equality, You Can Stand” by ElevationD: 12:06pm On Jan 27
Throwing up on him can be considered an act of assault, if proven to be deliberate. Again, were there no vacant seats. Approach matters a lot. Also we must consider if the man who have one of those bad days.

In those days in Lagos, school children would get seats in buses, stand up immediately they see elders, who in turn carry them on their legs and pay the transport fare. The reverse is the case nowadays. Infact children sometimes nearly chase adults out of the seats. Parents who travel with their children ensure that they do not show mercy to adults in the buses. I guess that’s what modernity, as they call it, has led society to.

very bro. Something happens to me on a bus. The woman comes in with her 4 kids, sheask one to seat on my lap, I reject where as she can pay for 2 seat. The next thing I hear from her is do you have wife or children at home.. Can you imagine

That's a dumb move and way to look at it. Carrying another human being is not the same as equality, that's duality.
