Is Nigeria really an "Energy Giant," or are we just scratching the surface? 🇳🇬⚡️ According to the International Energy Agency, Nigeria is the 5th largest producer of electricity on the continent. Nigeria’s position among Africa’s top five producers is a profound paradox: despite being a "top" generator, defined by chronic energy poverty. While South Africa and Egypt use their massive outputs to sustain industrial economies, Nigeria’s similar total output is diluted by a population of 240 million, leaving the average citizen with 20 times less power than their South African counterparts. This creates a "Giant with Clay Feet" scenario where Nigeria’s grid provides just 170 GWh per million people, a staggering contrast to the 3,522 GWh available in South Africa or the 2,001 GWh in Algeria. If you could solve one part of the energy chain: Generation, Transmission, or Distribution, which would it be? Let’s discuss the future of the grid in the comments! 👇 Nigeria is the fifth-largest producer of electricity in Africa (2023)Source

Nigerial should not be on the list, other countries get better electricity than nigeria. |

DrMB:What is our population versus that of the other countries? |
| Re: Nigeria Is The Fifth-largest Producer Of Electricity In Africa by Gbadugbakun(m): 2:02pm On Jan 27 |
shox:A large chunk of that population in rural areas are not connected to the national grid. Most rural areas in the north and south don't have electricity, so why can't they give the ubarn areas light? |

We too dey born for this country. The population explosion has it good and bad sides. Note that, part of what we generate is given to Togo, Benin republic and Niger. It is well with us |

[s][/s]and to think some people are solely the beneficiary of the power generated |
| Re: Nigeria Is The Fifth-largest Producer Of Electricity In Africa by WhizdomXX(m): 2:03pm On Jan 27 |
It's also the fifth largest economy but that's nothing to celebrate when we are by far the largest population on the continent. To answer the OP's question as a Professional, the most critical sector right now is in the transmission and distribution not even generation. We will come to generation. shox:Exactly. Clean and Renewable energy, particularly Solar is the way. |

Mtchewwwww..... As if we care. Do they know how many countries we supply light to? So imagine if we do t supply other countries light, we won't be suffering with power supply. |

| Re: Nigeria Is The Fifth-largest Producer Of Electricity In Africa by Ihaveleftnaija: 2:03pm On Jan 27 |
Good for naija. But let's be honest. We need to do better,we have a lot more population than any country in Africa so the electricity we generate taking into account the industries and all, that's not anywhere close to enough. |

| Re: Nigeria Is The Fifth-largest Producer Of Electricity In Africa by Emeskhalifa(m): 2:04pm On Jan 27 |
The issue here is the electricity being generated in Nigeria is too small for our population. See what South Africans are generating na, goan check their population It's either government level up in electricity or start creating awareness that bringing too many children to the world will affect our already scarce resources. |
| Re: Nigeria Is The Fifth-largest Producer Of Electricity In Africa by Ihaveleftnaija: 2:05pm On Jan 27 |
anythingoes23:We generate more but we also have a huge population, so the countries that generate less but less population enjoy more access. |
| Re: Nigeria Is The Fifth-largest Producer Of Electricity In Africa by oluxy(m): 2:05pm On Jan 27 |
DrMB:How did Nigeria became giant of African self? Is it by population that we are giant or by corruption? I think before calling a country a giant amongst her fellow countries, he's already leading in 95% of everything... Can someone help me with how we came about the name. Maybe it will help the sane of most of us here not to be bothered anymore when we see this kind of news. |

This is nothing to celebrate rather to be ashamed of. We should be one of the top 10 in the world not in Africa. |

South Africa and Egypt have nuclear reactors that powers their homes and industries. Algeria is a Gas powerhouse. Despite the fact that Morocco imports most of its power and also leads in renewable energy, they still output more than Nigeria. Nigeria is a gas powerhouse too and has uranium deposits that can power nuclear reactors, but these potentials have long been underutilised despite being more energy-hungry than South Africa, Morocco, Algeria and Egypt. |

Compare with her population, I think Nigeria is the least among the listed countries. |
| Re: Nigeria Is The Fifth-largest Producer Of Electricity In Africa by Kaczynski: 2:07pm On Jan 27 |
I don't see a reason why a nigeriape would depend on government for basically everything. We are literally in the golden age. Technology has made everything easier including generating electricity Most of our ancestors would lynch us if they were offered opportunities to swap places with us. |
| Re: Nigeria Is The Fifth-largest Producer Of Electricity In Africa by VEE2010(m): 2:08pm On Jan 27 |
This is yet another misleading piece of information. We generate 40 GWh to power how many people? To be objective and without political bias or image concerns, could you please revise these figures to reflect the amount of electricity produced relative to each country's population? Also, include the transmission rate |
