AS president in 2011, Goodluck Jonathan did all he could to ensure South West grabbed the country’s number four seat, including lobbying then opposition leaders from the zone, to no avail. The North West eventually grabbed the seat, supported by South West leaders in opposition to then ruling party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Former Governor of Osun State and now statesman, Chief Bisi Akande, made this revelation in his autobiography, “My Participations” which is currently dominating political and national dis- course.

Aminu Tambuwal, now Sokoto State governor, won the seat, against the preferred pick of his party, Mrs Mulikat Adeola Akande, from the South-West. Defunct Action Congress of Nigeria, then a fledging opposition, which had Akande and his soulmate, former Lagos State governor, Senator Bola Tinubu, as front- line leaders, openly asked its elected members of the House of Representatives, mostly from the South-West, to work against their region and back Tambuwal from North-West.

The opposition party’s support carried Tambuwal through the contest against Akande, then ruling party’s favourite for the speakership seat.

In his book, Chief Akande revealed that former president then as incumbent, personally reached out to Tinubu, who is now believed to be nursing presidential aspiration in 2023 and himself, but couldn’t convince them.

He wrote, “President Jonathan, immediately after the meeting (with political parties), called Bola Tinubu aside into a lobby to broach the matter of ACN support for a choice of who would become the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

“That same day, President Jonathan talked to me on phone about the same matter. He disclosed that PDP had zoned the position to the South-West but that only one Muraina and another Mulika won elections on PDP ticket from the zone into the House of Representatives.

Mrs Olakunrin died of gunshot wounds in July 2019 after her vehicle was attacked by armed men, suspected to be marauding Fulani bandits whose violent activities had reached a frightening level across the southwest states.

Those arrested suspects include Lawal Mazaje, 40, from Felele area of Kogi State; Adamu Adamu, 50, from Jada area of Adamawa State; Mohammed Usman, 26, from Illela area of Sokoto State and Auwal Abubakar, 25, from Shinkafi area of Zamfara State....

However, the leader of the team, identified only as Tambaya, and three others are yet to be found.

Tambaya has been declared wanted by the police and he is said to be capable of communicating in Hausa, Fulfude and Pidgin English.

I'm not saying it should be introduced, I'm just saying we Christians have a lot to learn from Islam. I know the general narrative, but I tell you what I know many Muslims are far much more kindhearted than most Christians, I'm talking from personal discovery over Years of my experience.

To what extent has the so called Sharia law helped the societies where they are in operation? I think these types of people are just rabble rousers who just want society to ba in perpetual chaos. Nothing positive can ever come from them and their purpose.

The problem is not decency, modesty, or religion as abstract ideas. The problem is moral outsourcing. When people are taught that dressing “right,” performing rituals, and signaling obedience equals goodness, they stop doing the harder work of building an actual conscience. Appearance becomes a shortcut to virtue, and cruelty slips in through the back door wearing holy language. History makes this painfully obvious. Some of the deadliest characters on earth prayed regularly, dressed modestly, quoted scripture fluently, and were absolutely convinced of their righteousness. Despite how often it shows up there in modern headlines. Islamic, Christianity, Judaism, Hindu nationalism, secular ideologies dressed up as science or patriotism. Same pattern, different costume.

Religion becomes dangerous when:

Obedience is valued more than reasoning

Authority is treated as sacred

Doubt is framed as corruption

Morality is external instead of internal

At that point, “decency” turns into theater. You get people who look disciplined but outsource empathy to a rulebook. When harm is justified as divine will, the mind goes quiet and violence feels clean. That’s how ordinary people do extraordinary damage without feeling evil. And yes, brainwashing is the right word when questioning is punished, when children are trained to fear hell more than they understand kindness, when identity is fused so tightly to belief that leaving feels like death. A system that cannot survive scrutiny does not deserve protection from it. The uncomfortable truth is this: no ideology should be immune to analysis just because it calls itself sacred. If a teaching discourages critical thinking, suppresses individuality, or excuses harm, it is not morally elevated. It is fragile. And fragility loves control.
Decency that comes from fear is not virtue.
Morality that collapses without supervision is not morality.
And a sound mind does not need uniforms, threats, or eternal punishment to behave humanely.
