Presidential Spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, says President Bola Tinubu lost balance in Turkey because he stepped on a metal object.

Onanuga said this while addressing enquiries on Tuesday regarding the President’s well-being in Ankara.

Daily Trust had reported how Tinubu missed his step briefly and fell in Ankara, capital of Turkey, on Tuesday.

The Nigerian leader was walking alongside his Turkish counterpart, President Recep Erdogan, when the incident happened.

Earlier, Tinubu had inspected a parade as part of the massive reception he received.


A review of the video of the incident showed that the president went down after a camera man moved his tripod stand close to him.

But Onanuga said the President merely stepped on an object, resulting in a minor loss of balance.

“The President stepped on a metal on the floor, which made him lose his balance,” Onanuga said.

“This is not a big deal, except for those who want to make mischief out of a fleeting incident. It was a mere stumble, thank God, not a fall,” he added.

There was no metal object here but this is president Erdogan, who is supposedly older by the way, teleguiding Tinubu down a flight of just two steps on an international podium. Bayo Onanuga should give it a rest already. The more they explain the more embarrassing it looks.

This should be the third or fourth statement issued by the presidency regarding Tinubu’s embarrassing stumble and fall, yet none has addressed Tinubu’s state visit to Turkey or its benefits to the country.

They accuse others of turning the incident into mischief, but forget that they are the real mischief-makers, judging by the retinue of press statements they have issued on the matter.

When a government and its spokesperson expend so much energy explaining Tinubu’s stumble and embarrassing fall, it signals only one thing: a government that is incompetent and directionless.

Turn the skin colour of the other man standing beside him to black and you'll see that it's just the same level of ugliness, if not worse. The fair skin of the whites tend to make them seem finer, but if you look at the features objectively (between blacks and whites, ignoring skin colour) you'll see there's really no difference
