You’re looking at indirect taxes as a proportion of net income, right? I think we first have to agree that in any capitalist system, the wealthy will always have an advantage. That’s why I believe holding governors accountable is key: increased revenue can then trickle down to the masses through better infrastructure, education, and healthcare, which over time will narrow the gap between the rich and the poor, as we’ve seen in Europe.

If their “strong systems” collapse because of migrants, then maybe they’re not that strong.

Xenophobia isn’t pressure. it’s scapegoating innocent hardworking migrants.

Why are their leaders not building more hospitals and schools to Accomodate the people coming in if they are so good. See, the problem is their lazy leaders but they don't see it ,they only see immigrants because of hate and jealousy

Nobody said Nigeria currently has good services. That’s not the argument.

The argument is simple: you can’t measure quality of life without funding it first.

South Africa and Morocco didn’t wake up with good roads and healthcare — they built them over decades using tax and then citizens forced accountability.

In Nigeria, we skipped the tax part and went straight to outrage. That’s why the state is broke and captured by elites.

Welfare, roads, healthcare all cost money. There’s no alternative model.

A top-to-bottom accountability structure is almost impossible under our constitution, which gives governors near-absolute powers and makes it hard for the FG to hold them to account. A bottom-up, citizen-led approach isn’t much better either—people are largely docile with their local leaders, shielded by tribalism and nepotism, and only find their voices when the FG is involved.

If we don’t think differently, we’ll keep funding the ambitions of 36 emperors while inequality keeps widening. A sensible starting point is improving literacy nationwide. The FG can use UBEC more effectively by setting firm standards and increasing counterpart funding. A more literate population is far more likely to make better decisions.

This is exactly the entitlement people are reacting to that causes xenophobia in these sort of countries.

No country is required to build hospitals, schools, and welfare for unlimited migrants. Those systems are funded by their taxpayers, not us.

Migration is a privilege, not an automatic right to other people’s services.

You can condemn xenophobia and still reject entitlement. Both can be true.

Refusing to build systems at home, then demanding the results of other people’s sacrifices abroad, is what sounds embarrassing
