The sheer scale of the musical instruments alone spoke of massive investment. The stage arrangement, the discipline, and the deep understanding of how each member related with one another were lessons worth studying.

I arrived during the soundcheck and watched closely as his manager coordinated every department—the percussionists, guitarists, sax and flute players, backup singers, and dancers—directing them to take their positions and begin playing. The rhythm flowed steadily for a while.

When Fela finally mounted the stage, he raised both arms and bowed left, right, and center. Instantly, every member of Egypt 80 became intensely focused—because Fela could detect the slightest mistake if you weren’t playing your instrument well.

“One, two, three, four.”

With subtle hand movements pointing downward, the rhythm shifted. The volume dropped, leaving only the shekere and keyboard echoing through the stadium.

Fela then began introducing the opening track to the audience. He explained that it was a repeat of what they had performed in Berlin and asked the crowd, “What is VIP?”

Audience: Very Important Personality.

Fela smiled and replied, “You’re partially correct, but in the Nigerian context, it means Vagabonds in Power.”

At that moment, the volume surged, the full band kicked in, and the performance resumed in full force.

What I learned that day was Fela’s deliberate effort to ensure everyone in the audience understood every aspect of his performance. He would pause to explain parts of his music just to carry everyone along. He never got lost in any musical key because he controlled every element of the sound.

Today, we see young performers mount the stage while the DJ plays pre-recorded beats, without any concern for whether the audience truly understands or connects with the music.
