Islander23:Lagos was already a Brtish Colony in 1890 7 years before the Benin expedition The British already knew Lagos was Yorubaland

Christistruth03:Don't mind the mumu propagandists. How can Benin people settle in a place and give the place a Yoruba name such as Isalẹ Eko? The propagandists no even get sense. Awori itself is a Yoruba name meaning 'The plate sank'. The name was derived from the history of the settlement itself. A group that travelled from ife were told by divination to follow a stream with a plate floating on it. They were asked to settle at any point where the plate sinks. The plate sank at Isalẹ Eko, and the people named themselves Awori. |

Christistruth03:you are right about this but the British were not fully grounded, this main expedition caused the fall of Benin empire...the British had to invade Benin to diminish their influence &power |
| Re: Why Lagos Does Not Belong To Yorubas – Oba Akiolu by lawani(m): 12:25pm On Jan 31 |
Islander23:You said Benin invaded Lagos. I asked for the details of that particular war. The war you are talking about must have happened more than a century before 1897 |
| Re: Why Lagos Does Not Belong To Yorubas – Oba Akiolu by lawani(m): 12:32pm On Jan 31*. Modified: 1:12pm On Jan 31 |
Islander23:No the British did not cause the fall of the Benin empire. There was no Benin empire in 1897. The last person that collected tribute in Benin was Balogun Ogedengbe of Ijesa who did so on behalf of Ibadan before the Yoruba civil war broke out. Ogedengbe is well known throughout the Delta, Edo states. Which city was tributary to Benin in 1897? It is wrong history to say the British truncated the Benin empire with one so called punitive expedition. The British were not able to suppress the Anioma for over thirty years |

lawani:at least you &I weren't born as that time...but we solely rely on research... that's why I gave a snippet of what you should research about...Benin punitive expedition of February 1897 |
| Re: Why Lagos Does Not Belong To Yorubas – Oba Akiolu by lawani(m): 1:17pm On Jan 31 |
Islander23:But the Benin punitive expedition have nothing to do with Lagos island being discussed. Benin had no influence in Lagos to be diminished as at 1897. |
| Re: Why Lagos Does Not Belong To Yorubas – Oba Akiolu by Christistruth00: 1:24pm On Jan 31 |
lawani:Thank you!!!! It was Oba of Benin’s begging and pleading that pacified Ogedengbe and the EkitiParapo Army from taking over Benin. They went back to fighting Ibadan instead Ogedengbe invaded parts of Benin but not Benin City itself |
| Re: Why Lagos Does Not Belong To Yorubas – Oba Akiolu by lawani(m): 1:40pm On Jan 31 |
Christistruth00:Accounts say an alliance was negotiated. Ogedengbe could not have acted without the go ahead of Ibadan because as at then the civil war had not yet broken out. The expedition was on behalf of Ibadan obviously.

| Re: Why Lagos Does Not Belong To Yorubas – Oba Akiolu by Christistruth00: 1:45pm On Jan 31 |
lawani:What I read was that Ogedengbe was angry at Benin supplying Firearms to Ibadan that he and the EkitiParapo were fighting against and so he turned on Benin for doing so It was one of the side shows of the Kiriji War |

| Re: Why Lagos Does Not Belong To Yorubas – Oba Akiolu by lawani(m): 1:50pm On Jan 31 |
Christistruth00:Are you sure that the Ijesa were not under the Ibadan at that time? I know that at one point Ibadan gave Ogedengbe the go ahead to go on expeditions. Ibadan already took territory from Benin by way of Akure and etc and they were not likely to be allies. The year I think was in the 1870s. It was a few years before Kiriji war broke out that Ogedengbe was in Benin territory |

lawani:first& foremost,I am a pure Yoruba man&I can't distort historical facts so back to the discussion, it has a whole lot to do with it because the main Oba of Lagos"s palace was situated at present day Ido...it was due to the war that it was moved to its present location... |
| Re: Why Lagos Does Not Belong To Yorubas – Oba Akiolu by lawani(m): 2:00pm On Jan 31 |
Islander23:You are saying it was because of the British expedition against Benin that they moved the palace in Lagos island?. Or are you saying the Benin invaded Lagos and they moved the palace because of that? I don't really understand you |
| Re: Why Lagos Does Not Belong To Yorubas – Oba Akiolu by Islander23(m): 2:03pm On Jan 31 |
lawani:.....are you saying the Benin invaded Lagos and they moved the palace because of that....Yeah |
| Re: Why Lagos Does Not Belong To Yorubas – Oba Akiolu by lawani(m): 2:07pm On Jan 31 |
Islander23:If that happened it will be recorded in history and the name of the war will be well known. Lagos island is very small and far from Benin and it can't be held by force by Benin. I doubt they had the logistics to invade the place since it would have had to be by the sea. Then how do you explain the fact that the Awo that established the town was an Ijesa man?. |
| Re: Why Lagos Does Not Belong To Yorubas – Oba Akiolu by Christistruth00: 2:16pm On Jan 31 |
lawani:The Ilaje even drowned Oba Ehengbuda of Benin and his War entourage in Lagos It was a very big disaster for Benin

| Re: Why Lagos Does Not Belong To Yorubas – Oba Akiolu by lawani(m): 2:29pm On Jan 31 |
Christistruth00:It should be remembered they didn't see the Benin as aliens. They spoke the same language. I used ifa to determine what happened in the past and I got that the Ijesa went to Benin to secure palm oil contract with the Portuguese and they sealed it. The Owa who was a woman and the Oba of Benin secured land from the Awori and isale Eko was founded. IFA said the odu IFA they got at Benin for the new town was Ose Irosun and that the second one which is Ogunda Irete that Lagos island is now known for was gotten when they got there and it is less potent. That is my finding using ifa. The Ijesa priest that led them there is the progenitor of the current line of Kings. He wanted to return to Ijesa but they begged him to stay and built him a palace |
| Re: Why Lagos Does Not Belong To Yorubas – Oba Akiolu by Islander23(m): 2:32pm On Jan 31 |
lawani:To be candid I don't know how about an Ijesha man being the founder of the town but Benin did invaded Lagos using the Uromi warriors...I think Wikipedia can be of help here. |
| Re: Why Lagos Does Not Belong To Yorubas – Oba Akiolu by lawani(m): 2:35pm On Jan 31 |
Islander23:The whole population of Lagos island when it was founded would be a few hundreds or much less. Nobody knew it would become big except maybe the priests who insisted it would become big. There was nothing to invade. The population of Lagos island in the 1890s after centuries of expansion was around 20k. Not everything on Wikipedia should be taken seriously |

| Re: Why Lagos Does Not Belong To Yorubas – Oba Akiolu by Islander23(m): 2:44pm On Jan 31 |
lawani:...oh my dear brother,I find this hard to believe...we have major sub tribes like the Aworis,Ijebus,Egbas,Igbominas.... Okie, lemme make you to understand those that discovered the island are the Ilajes due to their fishing activities but they did not settle down as residents,A former Lagos state governor"s ancestry is rooted in Ilaje so the population then was way above your projection |

Hankim:The post is about Lagos island not Lagos state |
| Re: Why Lagos Does Not Belong To Yorubas – Oba Akiolu by lawani(m): 2:46pm On Jan 31 |
Islander23:Are you now saying Lagos island owns the whole Lagos state? Ikoyi for example was established by Oyo. |

Oba Rilwan is even confusing us the more. |
| Re: Why Lagos Does Not Belong To Yorubas – Oba Akiolu by Islander23(m): 2:59pm On Jan 31 |
lawani:I never said that Bro but Lagos island as the major seat of power dominated other sub towns...you should know that in any major invasion what comes to the mind of the invaders is to capture the seat of power...No doubt ikoyi was founded by the Oyos admittedly but yet to confirm it...My family also gained not by conquest but by being the first settlers of a high end part of Lagos |

Islander23:The Oba of Lagos or Eleko of Eko is the most popular Lagos King but I don't think his land contains up to one million people. It can't be up to five percent of Lagos land mass |
| Re: Why Lagos Does Not Belong To Yorubas – Oba Akiolu by Islander23(m): 7:05pm On Jan 31 |
lawani:The population under the kingship of Lagos should be in hundreds of thousand because we have various clans that dominated the settlement &as a matter of facts some present day kings were bales before been upgraded to kings & their domain was under the tutelage of Eleko as you rightly called it |
