This data is misleading. I'm sure the person who put it together has never been to Lagos, a state where getting clean water through boreholes is extremely hard. It's even shocking that Lagos is the first.

Okay. We need more to join abeg. There should be access to clean drinking water even in the remotest village in Nigeria

Re: States With The Highest Access To Clean Drinking Water In Nigeria by Ogurube: 6:12am On Feb 01
How is Lagos on the list? Places like Lagos Island, Eti Osa, Ajeromi Ifelodun (Ajegunle), etc., don’t have potable water, given the brackish ground water and contaminated water ways. The water isn’t safe enough for human consumption, cooking, and hygiene, having all manner of pathogens and contaminants.
Re: States With The Highest Access To Clean Drinking Water In Nigeria by LegendHero(op): 6:12am On Feb 01
SW states in the top 12. That’s good.

Below are the states with the lowest access.

So you mean people in Lagos don’t have access to good drinking water?

You mean someone in Lagos won’t be able to drink clean water compared to someone in Ebonyi village with almost 40% lack of access to potable water?
Re: States With The Highest Access To Clean Drinking Water In Nigeria by Ablesam171: 6:15am On Feb 01
This can't be correct because if it is, Lagos wouldn't be number one.
In most parts of Lagos, when digging borehole, you don't need to dig too deep to get water but to see drinking water, it's almost impossible. You'll always need treatment especially on the island even on the mainland, to get drinking water for some area like Apapa na war, you'll also need to be treating the water.
This statistic is definitely wrong in my opinion.

If you did treatment then you have access to water. So how does that contradict the statistics?

This is how they define it as per NDHS report source.

Honestly this list no really surprise me. SW has always done better with water infrastructure, especially Lagos and Ogun even with population wahala, you still see boreholes, water works, and private supply everywhere.

What surprises me small is Kano at 92% because anytime you hear Kano news, na usually water scarcity complaints. Maybe access includes boreholes and not just pipe-borne water, because that one makes more sense.

Also, national average at 71% is still poor for a country like Nigeria in 2026. Clean drinking water no suppose be luxury. Some states no even near this list at all, which is worrying.

Government need to stop using figures for chest beating and actually focus on states where people still trek long distances or drink unsafe water. Access no be the same thing as sustainability. Let’s see consistency over time.

Lagos number 1 ?? grin grin

Joke of the millennium. They should tell that to the birds, other states can carry first but not Lagos. That facts is nothing but a joke.

Most residents can't afford treatment and even with the treatment in some parts, the water are still not drinkable.

You don’t know what you’re saying when you say “most”.

So what kind of water do they drink? Muddy water?

Ebonyi didn't make the list for a reason, but Lagos has no business being the first position. Perhaps if you know Lagos well, you will know it's disgraceful making it the number one. The person who put together that nonsense doesn't know where Lagos is.

Ebonyi is the second worst state in the south in the statistics.

Lagos is a city. Even for borehole where the water is somehow, they will still treat it one way or the other because the people living there have the finances. At worst they use pure water for drinking.

You cannot compare that to a village where people drink water from the river.

Ne like say Una no sabi comprehend topic. Basic drinking water. Are you saying Lagos people no get access to basic drinking water?

The Permanent Secretary, Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources in Lagos State, Mahmood Adegbite, has said that people drilling borehole in the Lekki axis of the state is probably drinking ‘’shit water.”

While speaking at a stakeholders meeting in the state recently, Adegbite noted that contaminated boreholes in Lekki pose health risk and added that treatment of waste water would eradicate any form of disease that may arise from it.

He said, “On waste water treatment, I will say that everyone digging borehole within the Lekki axis is probably drinking what I will call ‘shit water.’

Very true. It’s called the state of the living spring. I think Osun is the only state in Nigeria without beach or access to any sea water but with tons of clean waters. Dem get water for that state..

Osun is also distributing water across Sw states thru Ogun-Osun river basin. I think it was even why they started the scheme. I think it was Obj that did that, but not sure if nah Obj tho..

Ogun, Oyo are benefitting. Not sure about Lagos but I think they’re also benefitting..

I don’t think Ondo, Ekiti are benefitting cuz of the distance. Not sure tho..
