Funke Akindele Attacks Kunle Afolayan Over Cinema Profit Comments by kutashi(op): 8:18am On Feb 01
Seasoned actress, Funke Akindele, has attacked filmmaker, Kunle Afolayan, over his comments on cinema profits and the stress of movie promotion

Akindele launched the attack in response to Afolayan’s position on why he has stayed away from the cinemas for a while.

Saturday, the producer of: “Behind the Scenes,” which has been credited with raking in over N2 billion, wrote: “I’m not the one hindering your progress

"Ka rin ka po, yiye ni n ye ni.”

Going further Akindele said it was okay for those who can’t join the bandwagon or beat those involved to create their own path.

She wrote: “If you can’t beat them or join them, create your own path.

“No allow jealousy burn you.

“The sky is so big for everybody to fly.

“Eyin Werey jojo!!!”

Capping it up, Akindele, also popularly known as Jenifa, advised filmmakers to explore different approaches to marketing their works instead of complaining about existing trends.

She said: “Go ahead and create alternative promotion or marketing strategies for promoting your business, or hire a company to handle it.

“You can do it!

“The opportunities are endless, and everyone has their own path.

“I’m focused on mine, and I have faith in God’s plan for me.”

Afolayan had earlier said he would only fully return to cinema releases if filmmakers were no longer required to engage in exhausting promotional activities, including frequent social media dances, to sell their movies.

Speaking at the Lagos Business of Film Summit, he said: “For cinema, I’m one of the people who started the cinema gig, and dancing before anybody.

“I danced in London too, not just locally.

“In 2006, I did all the runs, and it was exhausting.

“I want to make a film if you can guarantee I don’t have to dance to sell that film.

“We need to come up with other strategies.

“How do we sell without exhausting ourselves?”

Referring to the pre-release of: “Behind the Scenes,” Afolayan said the current promotional demands do not suit him.

He said: “I don’t know how the likes of Funke Akindele and others are doing it — creating skits every day, changing costumes all the time.

“I can’t do it.”

Afolayan had earlier said he has several stories waiting for release but would not do so except earning for the filmmakers increased.

Speaking at the Watch Party of his Netflix series: “Aníkúlápó: The Ghouls Awaken,” he said: “I don’t want N2 billion streams at the cinemas and end up receiving N10 million.”Online TV streaming services

I totally agree with him. In fact, this is what made Bovi do in-person shows. He too said that he already has the craft, he has the product, those wey wan come and know the deal will come, he won't succumb to social media ridicule of this generation turning him to something else. That's why he went to Benin, Lagos and did his shows and said he won't do those crazy promotions online just to sell his tickets. If you notice, his show is so different, it doesn't have those insults, DJ mixes and noise the other comedians use to steal time and your money. Will people still go to those shows? Yes but the sky is big for everyone and that's what Kunle wrote in that proverb. Bovi further said he wanted to appreciate his original fans and removed those oppressive tables we use to extort ourselves in these comedy shows.

Afolayan is from the TK School of Works so I am not surprised with his mature comments. After some years, the work that was done for the art will speak louder than the work that was done for the fart money. Art is long, life is short.

Keep building your legacy Kunle. From the interviews I have watched of him and read, he understands the business angle of this industry and this last line means a lot if you want to put respect on your name and get your work's worth:

I watched Kunle Afolayan’s interview and I found nothing in what he said that should warrant this kind of pushback. In fact, it was more of kudos to Funke and others who have the energy to be promoting their movies through dances and skits.

It wasn’t a diss but a compliment. He was simply praising their energy to be able to do all that to promote their movies. He said it’s simply draining to him. It shouldn’t have caused this level of pushback.

exactly. His comments are mature and full of praise and admiration for the likes of Funke.

The works by Kunle and the mainframe man(Tunde Kilani )are deep and not these shallow films done by these new wannabes everywhere.

School no be scam at all.

If Funke Akindele a. k. a Jenifa, sabi good English, she would have understood Kunle Afolayan's statement. He never shaded her neither did he denigrade or downgrade her. She took offense because she misconstrued what was even Kunle's admiration of her strength and go - to spirit!

It’s just business. Funke understands the numbers game better than most. In this industry, if you don't watch your margins and profits, you will be famous but broke. You can't pay bills with 'Artistic Integrity' alone. Profitability is the only thing that sustains the industry.

Maybe something is wrong with me .... because I don't even see the need for a response to what he said. He's not prepared to put in that amount of time and energy and work just for promotion so he has out his work on pause. What's wrong with that? ...how does that imply jealousy? He's not even saying it shouldn't be so .I believe she's out of line and should apologize.

He said: “I don’t know how the likes of Funke Akindele and others are doing it — creating skits every day, changing costumes all the time.
But he is actually given them kudos for doing so, because he doesn't have the energy to do so again. And perhaps he had other several engagement now besides that.

I think there's salient beef between them before and Funke being a woman and emotional used that to attack Kunle. But in all honesty he hasn't spoken badly at all.

It's what the numbers do for you that matters. Kunle made a statement that is deep there and those in showbiz or football know this. You can take in 10bn, that does not mean it all belongs to you. Sales is not equal to profit share. I was just watching TLC too talking about how they made just hundreds from the millions that was made from their art. Oliseh was also explaining the other day how football contracts work and not all the thousand pounds per week goes to the players. All we hear is contracts and deals and money but you are not there to know what the Ts&Cs are. Art and business sense must go together. Everyone also has a niche market.

I just watched Afolayan’s explanation here and he addressed this issue as well as the profit sharing ration

I am proud of him now than before because he just confirmed what I wrote about legacy vs noise. What is your life purpose? Good one Mr Afolayan 👍
