Everyday you wake up just pray you and your loved ones don't have any emergency that would take you to a Nigerian hospital.

When e happen na grammar dem go blow for your head.
Better still don't be the source of another man's sorrow. Anyone that has involved themself in destroying other people's lives in one way or the other nothing can stop their children from reaping their sour fruits, not even God because God will not break his own laws and principles. The evil that men do live after them, karma is real. The more people are determined to commit evil the more this world is being destroyed
Not saying that is her case o, may she RIP. But Karma is real.

Once attime and years back one of my driver hit a Okada man and d driver was said to take the man to SDA hospital in with his family, Osun state ,guess what happened, they are waiting for me the owner vehicle arrive and pay close 400k and bring receipts b4 they start treatment

EXPRESSSMAN:
All these medical jargons is to save their face. Government owned hospitals in Nigeria don't care. This is for those who don't use these hospitals. If you go to Luth in Lagos and see how accidents victims are packed on bare floors, then, you will understand that there is no hope for emergency situations in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, the author of this information should have reserved his medical terminology for his fellow doctors and write what the agitated public should understand. This is how to communicate.

Gajagojo:
Antivenom is not a single drug
Each snake bite has a different antivenom

Antivenom is made from snake venom

That means somebody has to go and capture the snake and get the venom

After a snake bite there has to be information about the type of snake before giving Antivenom

If snake bite is not a common public health issue then there won't be Antivenom in Stock

Different snake bites kill in different ways e.g
some can stop breathing,
bleeding to death
or kidney failure

It is said that she had neurotoxicity which implies she stopped breathing
Likely a cobra

Maybe if they had mechanical ventilator they could have used machines to take over her breathing even without Antivenom

That is very expensive stuff and I wonder how many such machines are in the whole country with the staff doctors and nurses trained to operate them

There are some pla es in the world where snakes bite people daily they are likely to have more expertise and things like antivenom

I think that is the case in places like Bauchi Gombe

May hers soul rest in peace
I hope we learn from this
Did you read the part where it says she was transferred to the ICU, what do you think is in the ICU if not mechanical ventilators. Nigeria is not that poor not to be able to afford mechanical ventilators in a federal medical center in the federal capital.

It's not possible for an ASV not to be available in Abuja.

Cobra is highly neurotoxic leading to cardiotoxocity.

The time of arrival to th hospital is another issue.

Not saying the hospital is lying... FMC still has good services.

But, this just goes to show that our Emergency Services remain less than zero across the nation, especially in remote places.

Remember the Anthony Joshua accident case!

Many lives would have been saved if our emergency services existed for medical and security incidents.

were you at the hospital when it happened? Health workers can be sometimes annoying but generalizing isn’t good enough. We can easily tarnish the credibility of some firm by careless talks online.

😂 Possibly to avoid stories of please we don’t have money after treatment.

Sometimes I don’t blame some clinics, like people go for treatments like whatever they’ll use to treat them is free. Some patient will even abscond after treatment and there is no money to pay. Sometimes it is a rule to not start treatment without a deposit or a good relationship with the hospital (like if you are a registered customer). It’s just a normal thing in most private hospitals.

Some hospitals have gone broke because they treated patients on the promise of 'we will pay', only for the patient to flee the hospital without paying after.

It can even get bad that some hospitals don't make enough money to pay staff on time or at all when too many patients do that.

On the topic of this thread, no comment.

All I will say is, nigerians get the type of leaders they want.

Modified

Had to comment after all, because there was a lot of misinformation

1.Tying tourniquet does not help snakebite victims people.

2.CPR is very neccesary for unconscious snakebite victims....

I'm almost always on the side of our hospitals not properly funded and equipped, this is definitely the reason many Nigerians who read the news will quickly believe the hospital lacked the necessary provisions to save her, I read she drove herself to the hospital, what I know is that bite victims should limit movement to near zero, and that tying a cloth doesn't help, these could have made the spread faster.
Very unfortunate, would have been better if rapid response was possible by just dialling a number, but we still don't have such provisions in Nigeria, she did her best, but then sometimes that's not enough, may the universe not let us be unfortunate, if we must be unfortunate, let it be the kind whose tales we live to tell.
She drove herself? Omo!

A bite victim is not supposed to move at all, like movement or any activities should be zero or close to zero.

It's an experience one won't wish his worst enemy
Nigerian politicians are the only people u can ever use to describe or equity Nigerian medical personnels in government owned hospitals.

Providing CPR on a snake bite victim? This only further pushes the venom deeper into the body.
Actually, it can be useful.

We report the case of a 57-year-old female who presented with a history suggestive of snakebite envenomation. Approximately one hour after hospital admission, she developed sudden cardiac arrest. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was initiated, resulting in return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC)

Source

The first question any competent medical professional will ask is, what kind of snake bit her? This will quickly narrow down and pinpoint the most effective anti-venom for that particular kind of snake.
The fact that she had neurotoxic complications and was given polyvalent antivenom shows it was very likely a cobra that bit her.

The shameful disgrace of Nigeria is that the whole federal capital territory doesn't have a centre equipped with anti-venom that any hospital across Abuja can call and have it available in minutes.
But as the press release shows...there was antivenom and it was administered.

Abuja is expanding. It is inevitable that this expansion will reach areas that certain wildlife have long regarded as home. These displaced animals, snakes inclusive, start entering residential areas. The case of the Airforce personnel who got bitten by a snake that crawled through her soak-away into her toilet, is fresh in memory. Her house was built in a freshly claimed area
Nothing to add here..

Yet just a 45 minute drive from Abuja, along the Abuja-Keffi expressway, is a snake farm owned by a retired Chief of Army staff. The most evil CAS this country has ever had. Snake venom is steadily harvested from that farm and shipped abroad.
But as the press release said, they did give her antivenom.

kai! That is a medical error from them
In rare but serious cases, CPR may be required, especially if the snake is highly venomous and neurotoxic, such as a krait or cobra. Their venom can paralyze the muscles involved in breathing, leading to respiratory failure. If the person becomes unresponsive or stops breathing, begin CPR immediately: give 30 chest compressions followed by 2 rescue breaths. Continue the cycle until the person starts breathing again or emergency services take over. Only perform CPR if there are clear signs of respiratory arrest or unconsciousness.

Source

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an essential life-saving technique that may be necessary in severe snake bite cases. If the victim becomes unconscious and isn’t breathing normally, you’ll need to start CPR immediately.

Snake venom can cause cardiac arrest and thus CPR is required. Whether ASV was available or not,is up in the air

They used polyvalent snake Venom... Sort of generic. Ideally they should have anti venoms for each endemic venomous snake species in that region.
At least they had something to work with, unfortunately it wasn't enough to save her.
Depends. There is polyvalent antivenim available for NIgeria though

He may be a tribalist, but the person he responded to implied in his comments that there was no antivenom in the hospital, when the hospital press statement said there was antivenom and it was administered.

Hence his rather crude response to that.

TO quote directly from it

We want to clarify that the management team at Federal Medical Centre, Abuja acted promptly and with the utmost care upon Ms. Nwagene's arrival. Our medical staff provided immediate and appropriate treatment, including resuscitation efforts, intravenous fluids, intranasal oxygen, and the administration of polyvalent snake antivenom.

Ordinary snake bite,
Nigeria hospital even at federal Capital Territory can't cure
Nigeria hospitals don't care
Well, the patient had neurotoxic complications from the bite. Even under the best of conditions, including prompt administration of antivenom, patients can still die. It sadly does happen.
