Lies! Why did they untie the tourniquet that had preserved her life before administering the so-called anti-venom shot? Besides, the very first thing they did to her was to administer drip after losing the tourniquet telling her to relax as if they knew what they were doing. She had been on a call with her brother all through the steps she took to save her life. It was only when they administered that drip that did nothing to counter the toxins now spreading in her body after taking the tourniquet that she died.

The hospital is culpapble for negligence. They should have applied the efforts expected of their profession to save the girl. The first hospital that rejected her should be closed down for being useless. Anti-venom medicine should not be a scarce commodity in our today's world. Nigeria is still breathing the air of the 1800's.

Writing all these medical jargons to bamboozle us doesn't change the fact that most Government-owned hospitals are very nonchalant when it comes to attending to Nigerians, especially ones requiring emergency medical attention.
A lot of their doctors are always disgruntled, angry and rude. Only a few remain calm and well behaved.
My last experience at the Lagos State General Hospital wasn't very pleasant at all. I just feel the current Nigeria is frustrating the hell out of every Nigerian.
You mean you don't know why they are always angry or rude? How will someone who work in a harsh or unfriendly environment be happy?

Right from day one of training to when they start working, the Nigerian health practitioners are exposed to harsh or unfriendly environment.

PRESS STATEMENT FROM THE FEDERAL MEDICAL CENTRE ABUJA

CLARIFICATION ON RECENT EVENTS REGARDING THE CASE OF LATE IFUNANYA LUCY NWANGENE

We wish to address the circulating discussion on social media concerning the unfortunate case of Ms. Ifunanya Lucy Nwagene, who tragically passed away due to neurotoxic complications following a snake bite on January 31, 2026.

First and foremost, we express our deepest condolences to the Nwagene family during this incredibly difficult time. The loss of a loved one is never easy, and our thoughts are with them.

We want to clarify that the management team at Federal Medical Centre, Abuja acted promptly and with the utmost care upon Ms. Nwagene's arrival. Our medical staff provided immediate and appropriate treatment, including resuscitation efforts, intravenous fluids, intranasal oxygen, and the administration of polyvalent snake antivenom.

After a thorough but quick evaluation, it was clear that Ms. Nwagene suffered severe neurotoxic complications from the snake bite. Despite all efforts to stabilize her condition and transfer her to the Intensive Care Unit for further treatment, she experienced a sudden deterioration just before the transfer. Our team of professionals worked diligently to provide CPR and other life-saving measures; however, despite these efforts, we were unable to revive her.

We stand by the quality of care and dedication our team demonstrates daily. The claims of non-availability of anti-snake venom and inadequate response are unfounded and do not reflect the reality of the situation. We are committed to transparency and integrity in our practices and will continue to pursue excellence in patient care.

In light of these events, we encourage our community to engage with credible sources for information and updates rather than relying on social media speculation. We remain available for any further inquiries or clarifications.

Thank you for your understanding.

I've actually taken a victim of snake bite from Finance Bridge Abuja to Wuse General Hospital, the problem was I had no money on me, and they demanded deposit before treatment due to the cost of the drug

This is a woman I don't know.
She stepped down from a commercial vehicle and entered the small bush opposite Ministry of Finance to urinate.

I had to leave her there and flee.

Government faculties and agencies must surely say something to save their face. This is Nigeria for you. Have you ever seen them admit of wrong doing in Nigeria. Many people have lost their lives in government hospitals due to dilly dallying approach. Yet we read countless stories of people losing their loved ones

Nigeria hospitals don't care
One thing also, how did her immediate responders deal with the situation? Did they start shouting and running? Praying and casting? Did they administer first aid as appropriate for snake bite? You know how people behave when incidences occur...
Need to find out before we tackle hospital crew...

It's ordinary let's say the hospital she went to had the right medication
check about venomous snake on Google.I had watch documentaries too.
That aside , my brother we are in Nigeria and most people opening a hospital are there for business.this antivenom are very expensive.the cheapest that was 5-10k before the government policies that drove prices of things crazy.its now 40/50k I learnt and the expensive ones that is specifically made for a specie of snake and very potent use to be 40/50k , now going for 150/200k.i don't think any private hospital or even pharmaceutical outlet will easily keep it in there drug store/stock because most of the times they don't get to use it and at the end of the day, it will be a loss to them.some of them need to be in fridge because as hot weather will affect their potency.
I have asked a drug seller why and the answer he gave me wasn't a good one but since he is a business man, I had to just take the excuse he gave.he said they only stock drugs they will sell immediately and make gains from and then go back to get another purchase.they wouldn't want to stock a drug that would stay for long when they could have easily invest the capital and another drug.
They should have taken her to a teaching hospital or tertiary hospital immediately. that is the place they can easily get anti snake venom because teaching hospitals are govt owned and in most case don't have the mindset like the business guys.Even sometimes they still don't get to have too.our problem for Nigeria plenty Sha.

Providing CPR on a snake bite victim? This only further pushes the venom deeper into the body.
The first question any competent medical professional will ask is, what kind of snake bit her? This will quickly narrow down and pinpoint the most effective anti-venom for that particular kind of snake.

The shameful disgrace of Nigeria is that the whole federal capital territory doesn't have a centre equipped with anti-venom that any hospital across Abuja can call and have it available in minutes.

Abuja is expanding. It is inevitable that this expansion will reach areas that certain wildlife have long regarded as home. These displaced animals, snakes inclusive, start entering residential areas. The case of the Airforce personnel who got bitten by a snake that crawled through her soak-away into her toilet, is fresh in memory. Her house was built in a freshly claimed area.

Yet just a 45 minute drive from Abuja, along the Abuja-Keffi expressway, is a snake farm owned by a retired Chief of Army staff. The most evil CAS this country has ever had. Snake venom is steadily harvested from that farm and shipped abroad.
how will someone knows the type of snake that bit him or her. Will the victim stand and be looking for the snake. Will the snake wait for the person to check it's spacies

Not saying the hospital is lying... FMC still has good services.

But, this just goes to show that our Emergency Services remain less than zero across the nation, especially in remote places.

Remember the Anthony Joshua accident case!

Many lives would have been saved if our emergency services existed for medical and security incidents.
In the Anthony Joshua's case the two victims were already dead at impact. No amount of emergency rescue services could save them.

And as for Anthony Joshua, he was also immediately attended to, but not at the speed of the Western rescue system. But expecting that to happen in Nigeria for any foreseeable future is an hallucination.

From the Nigerian perspective, it's not just money, they are also asking for better facilites. But more often than not, the media focuses on the money issue.

UK doctors go on strike for well, salaries, and also for conditions of service. Which can get stressful at times.

While it is true that the USA does charge exorbitantly

1.Medical doctors in the USA take out very huge loans to pay for their studies. Remember that in the USA, a medical degree is a postgraduate degree. So, to become a doctor there..its 4 years of university, then 4 years of medical school. Debts from the loans can be as high as 150000 dollars . If they are not paid very well, they would be broke and unable to afford even basic costs of living.

2. Also, the US Is the world leader in medical research and treatments. Cutting edge costs a lot of money. Cutting edge medications and protocols cost a lot of money

3.USA also has very high standards for its hospitals...this is not your average nigerian hospital, this is a hospital where a common ward can look like a high grade ICU ward in Nigeria. All that costs a lot of money.

4.Malpractice. Because doctors can be sued for anything in the USA...they carry something called malpractice insurace...which costs a lot of money. (While some of the doctors are sued justly, some are sued for frivolous reasons..eg Ben carson being sued for a surgery that literally saved the patient's life)

Doctors have gone on strike in china , also on protests as well.

The problem with China is that doctors are not allowed to unionize. That makes going on strike very difficult. (Here in Nigeria, doctors that work for private hospitals can't go on strike for the same reason).

1.North Korea is the kind of country that any meeting to even express dissatisfaction with the government can get you sent to jail for life...in a remote prision camp, with your family members, including extended family members

Imagine trying to organise a strike, any strike in that country.

2. North Korean medical practice is really really godawful. It's so bad.

How bad is it? A North Korean soldier defected to South Korea across the border, and was shot by his colleagues as he did so. When he was operated upon by a South Korean doctor, who was 58 years old at the time (it's important)...the doctor found tapeworms and other worms in the intestine of the soldier. The last time he saw such things was in a medical textbook as a medical student over three decades previous.

Russian doctors have organised protests and even strikes. Putin is not that autocratic as you think he is.
You will always find excuses to justify your oppressors. From tax to medical to governance, your oppressors are always excusable.

Is that a good mindset not to place blames where they actually belong to the detriment of the masses?

Government neglected the health sector. Those health workers are working like slaves. Imagine all government hospitals has been working skeletal for 3 months now because of JOHESU strike and the government still refuse to honour their demand an agreement of 12 years ago. Just imagine no salary review for the past 12 years and compare it with inflation today. When learned about their demand and reason for the strike I honestly support them. The government is our problem not the health workers

The system is broken because government has decided that the reward of health workers is in heaven not in Nigeria from substandard health infrastructure, scarcity of essential Drugs to poor renumeration of healthcare workers Nigerian government has tunred hospitals to mortuaries and it will continue because the average Nigerian hates going to the hospital talk more of even liking healthcare workers

stop displaying your ignorance.
CPR is not to treat the snake bite or fight against venom. Is probably the patient was unconscious, Not breathing or only gasping, No pulse. That was why CPR was administered. polyvalent antivenom was said to have been administered which is meant to fight any snake venom since they didn't know what type of snake bite her.
