2027: Kwankwaso Stalls Defection To ADC Over Obi’s Ticket Uncertainty by Pakute(op): 6:24pm On Feb 02
The National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Rabiu Kwankwaso, is delaying his defection to the African Democratic Congress months after engaging with the party leaders due to lack of assurance that former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, will secure the party’s presidential ticket, Sunday PUNCH has gathered.

Highly credible sources within the Kwankwasiya Movement, the political group of the former Kano governor, and the ADC told
Sunday PUNCH that Kwankwaso’s defection was largely dependent on the arrangement.

There is currently a proposed alliance between Obi and Kwankwaso for a joint 2027 presidential ticket under the ADC.

According to top politicians familiar with the process, the plan was forged by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Sunday PUNCH learnt that a three-man committee set up by the ADC to interface with political bigwigs willing to join the party had met with Kwankwaso through a committee he also put in place.

A principal official of the ADC told our correspondent that the two committees met a few days ago in Abuja to finalise Kwankwaso’s defection.

According to the official, no final decision was taken due to unresolved issues at the meeting.

He, however, said both parties would reach a “strong conclusion in a week or two.”

“We’re closing in on Kwankwaso, and we will be happy to receive him. Our committee and his met a few days ago and they will meet next week to take, maybe, a strong decision and reach a strong conclusion. We’re still engaging, though there are some unresolved issues,” he added.

An insider in the Kwankwaso camp acknowledged the meeting but said the former governor might not defect “anytime soon.”

He disclosed that some northern leaders and Obasanjo had cautioned Kwankwaso against rushing to the ADC.

The loyalist added that the leaders specifically warned Kwankwaso not to defect until there was an assurance that Obi would receive the presidential ticket.

The source said, “Many things are playing out, and some northern leaders and Obasanjo are advising RMK (Kwankwaso) on his defection. As it is, it seems Kwankwaso is the bargaining strength for Peter Obi to get the presidential ticket in the ADC, and the card must be carefully played.

“Currently, ADC leaders are mounting pressure on RMK to join the party. Of course, he is interested, but we don’t want to play into the hands of some people rooting for Atiku’s presidency who have almost taken over the party.

“The picture we are seeing from outside is that Obi was lured into the party, and we don’t want to fall into that trap. The game ahead is that Obi will participate in the ADC presidential primary, and after losing to Atiku, he will be persuaded to take the VP slot. How far he wants to go on that, we don’t know.”

He noted that Obi and Kwankwaso’s camps had met with some key national leaders to galvanise support for the ex-Anambra governor’s presidential ambition.

The NNPP chieftain disclosed that without the conclusion of “wider consultations,” the defection might not take place.

“We are committed to seeing the South complete its eight years, which is only possible with Peter Obi’s presidency. People like Baba Ota (Obasanjo) also believe in that, and it is in that line that Kwankwaso can have a chance to contest the 2031 presidential election.

“RMK is still consulting, and until those consultations are concluded, nothing serious will happen. As it stands, Kwankwaso is Obi’s only strong bargaining chip for the ADC presidential ticket. Notwithstanding, politics is dynamic. A day is too long in the political arena,” he added.

The insider also confirmed that both Kwankwaso and the ADC committees met a few days ago and agreed to meet again in the coming week.

“Yes, the two committees met a few days ago in Abuja and they agreed to meet again. By next week, we should have a position,” he stated.

When contacted, the National Publicity Secretary of the ADC, Bolaji Abdullahi, declined to comment, saying he had no information about the matter.

He said, “I am not part of any committee speaking with Kwankwaso, so how would I know what you are talking about?”

He, however, described him as a strong political leader.

The spokesperson for the NNPP, Ladipo Johnson, also declined to comment on Kwankwaso’s defection.

He said, “I’m not in possession of any useful information on what you’re asking, so I may not be able to comment.”

If you know Kwankwaso's politics, you will stay clear of him.

Moreover, what can he deliver outside Kano which is surely going to be divided.

Political moves in Nigeria are highly calculated, and Kwankwaso’s caution reflects strategic patience. Until there’s clarity on Obi’s candidacy, many stakeholders will likely hold their cards close to avoid missteps that could cost influence or relevance in the 2027 elections.

He will regret again! The last time he said Labour Party was like Andrew liver salt poured in the water, this time APC gave him a better deal but rejected it. He has lost again😂😂 BAT 2027 is the password!
Re: 2027: Kwankwaso Stalls Defection To ADC Over Obi’s Ticket Uncertainty by onuman: 6:31pm On Feb 02
But since 2019, Abubakar Atiku has been working for the success of the APC which he also helped to establish in 2014 when he wrecked the PDP through his nPDP wing joining the APC.
At one point before 2014, Tinubu also lent his political party to Atiku to contest for presidential election.
Re: 2027: Kwankwaso Stalls Defection To ADC Over Obi’s Ticket Uncertainty by PlushyRealtor: 6:31pm On Feb 02
If ADC is truly serious about winning in 2027 and presenting a credible alternative, clarity is key. Peter Obi remains the most nationally acceptable and electorally proven candidate among the opposition, with strong grassroots appeal and youth support across regions. Prolonging uncertainty only weakens momentum and discourages strategic alliances. Giving Obi the ticket early will unify forces, build confidence, and send a clear message that competence and credibility, not political bargaining- are the party’s priority.

Kwankwaso will NEVER be 2nd fiddle to Obi.

Some will cry about it but truth is bitter. grin

Kwankwaso isn't simply on his level at all.

It is like comparing Kano Pillars with FC Barcelona.

Yes the same team Messi & Guardiola played for.

Peter Obi should go and beg Atiku.

2023 was their chance and they blew it.

Re: 2027: Kwankwaso Stalls Defection To ADC Over Obi’s Ticket Uncertainty by Jorussia(m): 6:32pm On Feb 02
Atiku is going to emerge the presidential candidate of ADC.Kwankwaso is decimated politically with the defection of the governor to APC.Kwankwaso was only relevant in Kano, and the defection of Kano governor has made him very irrelevant politically even in Kano.

Personally,I think the defection of Peter Obi to ADC is not a smart political move.Peter Obi,if he is truly different, and not corrupt like other politicians in Nigeria, should be a face of a political movement in a small political party. I
don't see how PBAT will lose 2027 elections. APC is simply too strong and they are consolidated power every day.

The APC needs to implode just like PDP did in 2013 for PBAT to lose 2027.

lol you go fear all this super story.

Except if Atiku willingly say he won’t contest, no mortal on earth can wrestle ADC ticket from him
Re: 2027: Kwankwaso Stalls Defection To ADC Over Obi’s Ticket Uncertainty by Unittyy: 6:32pm On Feb 02
The only ticket capable of defeating Tinubu in 2027 is Atiku/Obi ticket. Any other arrangement is dead on arrival.

1. RMK to deputise Peter Obi? I laugh in Kwale. I'm sure Obi and his advisers are smart enough not to allow such political mistake.

2. If Atiku conceded the party ticket to Obi (which is almost impossible) Atiku will definitely handpick the Vice for Obi and it will never be RMK.

Desperation for power is real o. Kwankwaso is even a worse bigot than Buhari. And OBJ thinks someone like that is a good candidate?. Someone who started this govt sponsored weddings and total Almajiri orientation.

If only Tinubu has balls and can go with the minister of defense as VP.

Kwankwaso is a good administrator but very indecisive politician. He doesn't know what he want and how to navigate political terrain wisely.

The only option left for him now is ADC while still delaying unnecessarily, join and form alliance ASAP and fight for that joint ticket. Nay is looking for cheap opportunity to be given everything on platter of gold. His only bargaining chip is slipping out of his hand fast if the care is not taken.
Re: 2027: Kwankwaso Stalls Defection To ADC Over Obi’s Ticket Uncertainty by JASONjnr(m): 6:36pm On Feb 02
In 2023, Kwankwaso was begged to deputize Obi and he rejected it by all means citing age and political relevance.

What changed? Why is he that desperate to be his vice all of a sudden?

But it's just funny though because Kwankwaso has lose all his might in Kano.

Having the governor and Ganduje in APC makes Kwankwaso not a threat anymore.

Knowing how self centered and ambitious Atiku is, it's safe to say instead of this plan to materialize he will prefer to scatter ADC

No one is giving anyone a ticket. Obi is in the ADC, he will contest the party primaries like all other candidates. If he can't defeat Atiku and Amaechi, how does he intend to defeat Tinubu? Or will he also ask Tinubu to step down and handover the presidency to him?
