Many of you will say what is this man saying, now read.

In a circle of 10 country men, we were all asked to mention benefits derived from their government.

United Kingdom
USA
Canada
Australia
Germany
Netherland
Swizerland
UAE
...
...
Nigeria

Most/all of them mentioned over 5 major things their government does for them so they're very much happy to pay their taxes.

1. A child born in any of these countries starting from day 1 is on the government payroll including standard free education from 6yrs to 18.
2. Electricity
3. Portable water
4. Health care and hospitality
5. Security
6. Job security
7. Roads and infrastructural development
Let me stop here...

What can an average Nigerian boost of? The subsidy an average Nigerian was benefitting has been removed since 2023.

Our Health care system is zero, look at Nanyah she died of ordinary snake bite, she fought for her life with over 2 hospital, non of them have anti venom, how shameful.

We provide our own security, look at the rate of killings in the country, even your own security can't guarantee your safety.

Our roads are death traps, it was God that saved Anthony Joshua in December.

Power absolutely nothing.

Our educational system is a total failure, ASSUU goes on strike just for selfish interest, nothing more.

We all know the level of decay the country is so I won't stress myself saying much.

Nigeria has over 44 natural resources from coal, iron ore, gold, limestone, bitumen, gypsum, kaolin, bauxite, lead, zinc, columbite, uranium, manganese, and various gemstones (sapphire, topaz, emeralds) only to mention a fuel...

With all of these natural resources, what does an Nigeria citizen benefitting from its government? Our Cocoa and cruise alone is enough to build this country, provide jobs and do other things.

United Kingdom doesn't have any reasonable natural resources, they survive mainly on taxation and royalty from around the world as they're likened to mother of the world. So citizenry can be taxed. But we has Nigerian, what can our government boost of giving us to make us taxable?
Road, healthcare, security, electricity, or jobs...? I can't point a single thing

I read, and still say "what is this man saying". And thankfully you mentioned UK, so no one can accuse me of being the one comparing to a portion called England.

You see, there used to be this feudal time in England when the Lord of where you lived said the land was his, and he took as tax a large portion of what you grew on the little patch he let you live on after you'd worked for him for tax on his very large land. When he fought wars he'd tax you for your sons whom you must kit in uniform and arms and his enemies might kill them. And you needed his permission when your daughters wanted to marry, and your daughter might have to spend the night before their wedding day in his castle as a form of tax payment. But don't ask me how that tax was paid. It was way before my time.

My point is, tax was not paid in England because you received something fair in return, but demanded of you because powerful rulers put their filthy paws in your pocket and on your sons and in your daughters and took what they want without giving you anything fair back in return.

Things didn't change much neither until eventually the people organised and rose up to fight for better rights and fairer taxation.

So, vote! That's how we organise today to elect leaders with smaller filthy paws they put in your pocket to steal your money they call tax! Voting is also what empowers you to demand that whatever money they do steal from you as tax is spent where it benefits you most so you are happy paying it, because some tax, unfortunately, must be paid.

And on that note, thank you very much for your thread because, well, tax!

Dis I read you talk about voting? Apart from the 2015 general elections please kindly mention any other election that the electorates' votes actually count. Don't tell me 1992 because that was nullified and after about 3 decades they still contributed money to the man who came out to admit he nullified a free and fair elections... A man that is supposed to be arrested immiadetly and sentenced to death by hanging or firing squad.

Didn't you hear when baba T said our votes didn't bring him to Aso Rock? So what vote are you actually talking about??

I'm actually tired of hearing "votes don't count", when the truth is, you don't bother to vote.

Over 90 million Nigerians were registered to vote in the last Nigerian presidential election that Tinubu won by a mere 9 million votes while most of us sat on our asses in our homes crying that votes we never cast didn't count!

Do you expect them to come count your vote in your house?

The biggest electoral fraud in Nigeria is convincing you your vote don't count. Once you believe that your vote don't count, you definitely will not bother to vote. But rest assured I'm telling my own supporters to definitely vote, and be prepared for me to lead you however I want to after I win, because, indeed your uncast vote does not count!

Hopefully, more of us will stop reasoning like you do, and understand that our votes make us the leaders and those we elect are our servants.

NOT paying tax in any country is an offence.
Nigeria is not different. With the newly introduced harmonized taxes starting from 2026, you have a fairer deal than BEFORE when multiple taxes existed.

Paying taxes and monitoring how it's spent is important herd. Period.

Yes oo. But voter suppression and manipulation also occurs.
See Lagos 2023 presidential election, Rivers 2023 Presidential election.

Indeed suppression and manipulation does also occur. That's why an election is not just about casting a vote, but about overcoming the suppression and manipulation, and counting the votes afterwards to determine who won.

And no, its not easy to count votes, though it's the easy part. It's much harder to overcome suppression and manipulation, and that's the task we have. And we better get on and learn to do the work of learning how to hold an election, because if we don't, no one but ourselves would be wailing when we are led by bad 'leaders'.

Rivers people stayed in line to be counted yet INEC exchanged their results for Wike's money. A VC I knew then, was the REC.

So, the people beat up the corrupt INEC, right? Because, if they didn't, they should have. But better still would have been voters showing INEC they are being watched so INEC wouldn't dare. They could also have taken a valid result to court to contest Wike's money.

But the beauty of democracy is you get to resit every 4 years, and would have, in that time, found the antidote to Wike's money and corrupt INEC officials. Part of democracy is after all being a party representative observing elections so we are not robbed by the Wikes.

Wikes are like hunters who have learnt to shoot without missing. We the birds, should therefore not just stand still to be shot, but should learn to fly without perching so the Wikes miss.

Are you based in Rivers?
