Naira Posted Its First Annual Gain In 13 Years

Nigeria’s currency the naira ended year 2025 on a positive note, notching its first annual appreciation in the last 13 years.

On 31 December 2025, the currency closed ₦1,429 per dollar, which represents 7.4% gain over the year, according to data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

It was the naira’s first yearly appreciation since 2012; the currency had suffered 13 consecutive years of depreciation driven by import dependence, forex shortages and persistent market imbalance.

Analysts have credited the turnaround to the foreign exchange market reforms started by the Central Bank in 2024 under Governor Yemi Cardoso.

The intiatives narrowed the gap between official and parallel market rates to below 5%, bridled speculation and improved price transparency.

Low level of understanding of the issues. He/she only sees one layer of information but can't go a bit deeper to understand the concept of currency gains. All that he/she knows is black market pricing...

Piity hin/her.

Which gain here , from 718 Naira to 1400, since Tinubu came to office. This is the height of gaslighting.

I think dollar is falling normally. I will only credit CBN for the stability of the naira.

Re: Naira Posted Its First Annual Gain In 13 Years by AsgardKing: 5:48am On Feb 03
Speculation has been minimized because the difference between the official rate and black market is now under 5%.

Si when the official rate of the dollar was N450 the market rate was N800 - over 85% in commissions and arbitrage. That has been cut down to 5% and this is what foreign investors seek - a stable forex market so that they can know the true value of their money. Not to buy black market today, and then repatriation happens via official rates meaning they lose a lot or have to work thrice as hard.

Very useless analogy. From almost 455naira official rate to 1400+ in less than 3 years (over 200% devaluation) is gain to these mofos.

They can as well increase it to 2600 today and reduce it to 2500 in January 2027 to claim some gains
Very wicked and evil minds in the corridors of power. Na Nigerians with their useless tribal and docile minds I blame

If not Dangote's refinery, Naira would have been at ₦2500/Dollar by now. So government did not do anything to improve naira. They were even fighting Dangote.

If you lose 1 million naira and then win 100 naira, is that still considered a gain?

Hmmm....you are very cold with this but honestly, you just mentioned the truth and I do not blame Nigerians in this case, I blame our leadership system that is not building a society that can train sane minds, instead, it trains feeble minds that believe in stealing than building.

A typical Nigerian does not believe in any economic growth that does not reflect that a tin of garri is 5k or a litre of pms to be 50k, a price some of them heard it existed in the 70s.

It's very difficult to comfort someone like that (with such mindset) when his fishing site is converted to coastal highway, he won't consider the general growth of his locality or first society but his personal fun denied and the stipend that comes out of his scrapped adventure

So we should celebrate naira at 1,429 per dollar when APC met it at 70 per dollar? What is there to celebrate?

The person actually asked a good question. Even with the unification of the exchange rate, Naira isn't supposed to dwindle to N1,000 to a dollar. The reason isn't far fetched, Nigeria isn't producing enough for the international market to make our currency stronger. Some of you really need to learn and stop defending Foolishness
