FreeStuffsNG:You are loudly and proudly obtuse. BBC just had this. The first hospital had no anti venom PlasmaTV:No mind am. Listen to BBC e no gree, na to dey spew rubbish. BBC said many vials are needed to treat one snake bite and each costs see below. And they expire in 4 years. Many Nigerian hospitals don't have it. The first hospital the young lady was taken to didn't have it!

MarkNsukkaBread:The hospital she was admitted into gave her antivenom. THEY HAD ANTIVENOM. She was also bitten by a cobra. Cobra venom is very toxic and even when ASV is given, the patient can still die. We should be focusing on speed of response here. Also, there is a scarcity of antivenom. Major pharma companies don't want to manufacture it for Africa because it is too expensive. |

richiemcgold:It is still a myth. It does not work, and it does not consititue first aid. |

stuffs2002:They do not work Again, post a RCT showing they work, or admit they don't work. |
| Re: Snakebite Deaths In Nigeria Raise Concerns Over Antivenom Shortages by nairalanda1(m): 8:44am On Feb 03 |
QuinQ:Yes, because there is a general scarcity of antivenim due to the fact that pharma companies don't make the stuff for the African market. It's only research groups that can make relatively small quantities. That's why antivenim is not widely avaialble in the African setting. Nigeria is even lucky to have a research group that manages to produce some small quantity of antivenim. It costs a lot of money to make antivenim. That's why the pharma companies don't want to invest in it...they would lose money. She did get to a hospital with ICU facilites and antivenim. And the antivenim was given. But even under the best of circumstances, cobra venom can be very toxic and fatal. |

nairalanda1:It has worked for me and more than two victims I personally witnessed. |

stuffs2002:Let me help with a free tip for you, a single bottle of anti snake venom could cost as much as $10,000, no joke. Try to make your research into potent natural antisnake venoms and become a multimillionaire in dollars. You know how much Gen Burutai makes from his snake farm? |

We are hardly ever proactive in this country. A shame |

EDUECO:See this one. Spewing crap |
| Re: Snakebite Deaths In Nigeria Raise Concerns Over Antivenom Shortages by nairalanda1(m): 8:46am On Feb 03 |
richiemcgold:Because the snake did not inject its venom into you. That's why you and your two victims think your cure worked. |
| Re: Snakebite Deaths In Nigeria Raise Concerns Over Antivenom Shortages by Racoon(m): 8:46am On Feb 03 |
dominique:Anti-snake venoms are either given subcutaneously on the skin or in the muscles. |
| Re: Snakebite Deaths In Nigeria Raise Concerns Over Antivenom Shortages by nairalanda1(m): 8:47am On Feb 03 |
DrAda:True that, but the snake anti-venom shortage is a problem that is not just 'our country' |
| Re: Snakebite Deaths In Nigeria Raise Concerns Over Antivenom Shortages by nairalanda1(m): 8:48am On Feb 03 |
Racoon:Not at all ASV is given IV. Echitab and Echitab plus 9made in and approved for the Nigerian setting) are given IV for example. |
| Re: Snakebite Deaths In Nigeria Raise Concerns Over Antivenom Shortages by nairalanda1(m): 8:49am On Feb 03 |
LearnEasy:Unfortunately people do die of snake bite. Poor response complicated by the fact that antivenim is not widely available. |

nairalanda1:Okay I've heard you Mr knows it all. Judging by your first comment, you don't know what you are saying. It is not by force to comment. Good bye. |
| Re: Snakebite Deaths In Nigeria Raise Concerns Over Antivenom Shortages by Racoon(m): 8:51am On Feb 03 |
nairalanda1:Whao! Doctor said the for fear of anaphylactic reactions, the under the skin route is preferred. Now if it must be in the veins, then a test dose is first to be given before the remaining. I don't know how real is that |
| Re: Snakebite Deaths In Nigeria Raise Concerns Over Antivenom Shortages by jaephoenix(m): 8:53am On Feb 03 |
EDUECO:Bitter kola etc don't have enough anitvenin to counter the inoculum from the snake, and even some of them don't have any antivenin properties |

richiemcgold:I work in medicine and have treated snake bite victims, both with venom and without, over the years, successfuly. So, I know a thing or two. |
| Re: Snakebite Deaths In Nigeria Raise Concerns Over Antivenom Shortages by nairalanda1(m): 9:03am On Feb 03 |
QuinQ:And it didn't have it because sadly we don't have enough...due to major pharma companies not making it in large enough quantities for it to be widely available. |
| Re: Snakebite Deaths In Nigeria Raise Concerns Over Antivenom Shortages by nairalanda1(m): 9:04am On Feb 03 |
Racoon:No, we usually give it IV. Maybe a small test dose, and if there is a reaction, treat appropriately with the appropriate drugs. But fortunately most reactions are either fever, rashes, and rarely more severe. |

nairalanda1:We are talking about traditional first aid here. Are you a tradomedical practitioner? If you are not, pls don't reply because it'll only amount to a waste of time . |
| Re: Snakebite Deaths In Nigeria Raise Concerns Over Antivenom Shortages by nairalanda1(m): 9:06am On Feb 03 |
richiemcgold:And what you posted is dangerous misinformation. I've already posted elsehwere what should be done when there is a snakebite re first aid. |
